Use your 67 minutes to donate blood

Use your 67 minutes to donate blood Zululand celebrity and Survivor SA 2019 winner Rob Bentele is championing the Richards Bay Blood Donor Centre's Mandela Day drive this Friday and urges locals to pop in to do their part for this worthy cause. Bentele will commemorate Madiba Day by using his 67 minutes to promote the blood centre's call to reach their target of collecting 80 pints of blood. He will be at the centre on the lower level of Boardwalk Inkwazi Shopping Centre from 2pm to meet, greet and catch up with Zululanders. The annual drive, which has been running for seven years with local real estate agency Leapfrog Property, will continue throughout July, with a lucky draw prize also up for grabs. The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) relies on donors to keep their stock levels at the required five-day supply to meet medical emergency needs. By donating a unit of blood every eight weeks, blood donors are able to live up to the ideal of Mandela Day by performing voluntary service throughout the year. SANBS calls on all donors, both new and existing, to donate this life-giving resource and save up to three lives as a result. The centre will be open from 9am to 4.30pm. Don't have the ZO app? WATCH: Hang out for charity on the ZO wash line

WATCH: Hang out for charity on the ZO wash line The countdown is on for the ZO's most heart-warming tradition – the 12th annual Hang out with Madiba charity drive. This Mandela Day on Friday, 18 July, the ZO team is once again stringing up washing lines and calling on the community to donate winter clothing, blankets, toiletries and non-perishable foods between 7.30am and 12 noon. The drop-off points will be the newspaper's offices at 3 Baines Road, Empangeni, and in the open space between the Civic Centre and East Central Arterial in Richards Bay where washing lines will also be erected. Clubs, schools and businesses are encouraged to erect their own charity lines on the day. By spending 67 minutes of your time collecting these items from your home and making a charitable delivery at the lines, or volunteering at the lines, you will be warming someone's cold winter. These 67 minutes honour the 67 years Nelson Mandela spent fighting for justice, equality and freedom. Let his legacy of kindness live on by hanging out for a good cause. The donations will be distributed via the ZO's charity arm Dice (Do I Care Enough?) to needy organisations and communities. Clothes collected on the day supply Dice and the city's Disaster Management unit for an entire year. The ZO has again partnered with the City of uMhlathuze, Rotary Clubs of Empangeni and Richards Bay, as well as Concord Access Solutions to ensure this winter is warmer for the needy. You CAN make a difference! Dice operations manager Karen Dalton shared the NPO's top needs: · Men's and teen boys' clothing, especially size small · Winter warmth: blankets, beanies, scarves for winter · Toiletries: soap, toothpaste, sanitary pads and toilet paper · Non-perishable items: packet soups, 2-minute noodles, porridge, maize meal, samp and beans, tea and sugar, or anything in the grocery cupboards at home, like canned goods There will be donation boxes at the drop-off points on Madiba Day. The Dice team also requests that the clothing be clean and in good condition, to avoid time-consuming efforts to mend or wash clothes. Unable to get to the ZO charity line on Madiba Day? Call Dave Savides on 060 9719249 or Karen Dalton on 035 7990500 or email [email protected]. Let us know how you are spending your 67 minutes! Support furry friends for Mandela Day

Leading up to Mandela Day, community members are invited to support the Richards Bay SPCA's dog and cat food collection drive which kicked off earlier this month. Zululander Zianca Moodley is calling for people to support the drive as well as spending a few of their 67 minutes in honour of Madiba Day contributing to this cause. With two of her own adopted furry friends, Roxy and Rocco, she is an avid supporter of the amazing work undertaken by the local animal welfare organisation. Cash donations can be made to the Richards Bay SPCA, and collection points for the animal food are available at SA Bedding and Manufacturers. Pick-ups can also be arranged by contacting Zianca on 072 461 9625. Don't have the ZO app?
