You CAN make a difference this Madiba Day
Are you ready for ZO's 12th annual Hang out with Madiba charity drive?
The ZO is calling on you to dig deep into your cupboards this Mandela Day on Friday, 18 July.
We hope you can make it to one of our drop-off points, either at the newspaper's offices at 3 Baines Road, Empangeni, or in the open space between the Civic Centre and East Central Arterial in Richards Bay.
From 7.30am to 12 noon we'll be collecting winter clothing, blankets, toiletries and non-perishable foods.
Donations will be distributed via the ZO's charity arm Dice (Do I Care Enough?) to needy organisations and communities.
Dice operations manager Karen Dalton said the top needs are non-perishable items including packet soups, 2-minute noodles, porridge, maize meal, samp and beans, tea and sugar, or anything in the grocery cupboards at home, like canned goods.
Donation boxes will be placed at the drop-off points on Madiba Day.

Staff of Caxton Local Media Joburg East as well as the Benoni City Times slapped on some hairnets and slipped on gloves as we endeavoured to make 1 000 sandwiches in celebration of Mandela Day on July 18. Loaves of bread were stacked high as staff members abandoned their desks to prepare delectable sarmies, which were donated to various charity organisations within each publication's footprint. Moved to tears, Antonette Grobler, of the Salvation Army Benoni Goodwill Centre, received the City Times' contribution. 'I cannot remember when last anyone did anything for our organisation for Mandela Day,' she said. 'Knowing that each individually packed sandwich was not only prepared with us in mind, but that our local community newspaper identified us as worthy beneficiaries, is truly heart-warming.' Casting her eyes on a further donation of packets of soup, which were donated by Caxton staff, Grobler said that the initiative will assist greatly in keeping bellies full and hearts filled with hope. 'I cannot wait to start handing these treats out at our weekly Friday soup kitchen,' continued Grobler. 'We are incredibly grateful to Caxton and the Benoni City Times. You are always willing to assist local charity organisations' tell their stories to garner ongoing support.' Mandela Day: Old age home thanks Big Save, Pretoria News for making 'big, big difference'
On Mandela Day, Pretoria News and Big Save joined forces to uplift the elderly residents of Mamelodi Old Age Home, donating food hampers and spreading kindness in honour of Nelson Mandela's legacy. The leadership of Pretoria News and Big Save believe that everyone deserves a good life and that every act of kindness – big or small – counts during this Mandela Month and beyond. The two brands, both rooted in the communities they serve in the Tshwane region, demonstrated this when they joined hands to celebrate this year's International Nelson Mandela Day on Friday with the residents of the Mamelodi Old Age Home in Mamelodi East, Pretoria. Pretoria News and retail partner Big Save donated 67 food hampers to the old age home. The outreach function on Friday was a heartfelt gesture to honour the late former president. Mandela Day, commemorated annually on July 18, encourages South Africans and the world to dedicate their time to acts of kindness, reflecting on Mandela's 67 years of service to the nation. In that spirit, Pretoria News and Big Save stepped in with practical support offering not only food but dignity and care to senior citizens often overlooked. The Mamelodi Old Age Home houses 56 elderly residents aged 60 and above, many of whom rely on limited government grants and small family contributions to make ends meet. The 67 food parcels were each packed with 12.5kg maize meal, samp, salt, sugar, tea, and Kellogg's Corn Flakes will go a long way in easing their burdens.

Missionary outreach uplifts Empangeni inmates
Hope pierced the walls of Empangeni Qalakabusha Correction Facility when a group of volunteers from Kairos Prison Ministry stepped inside. Kairos, meaning 'God's special timing', saw 30 volunteers participate in the outreach earlier this month, with 21 men entering the prison for ministry work, while eight women prepared meals for the inmates and Kairos team. There were 24 prisoners who, each day, received messages of hope and God's love. ALSO READ: Ordination marks 30 years in ministry for Richards Bay pastor 'May the Holy Spirit spread like wildfire in that dark place, bringing many to salvation,' said Trevor Watson, KZN Kairos state chair. While Koos Robbetse, a member of the worship team, said he witnessed first hand how music became a vessel for healing. 'There was something profoundly beautiful about hearing voices joined together in praise, especially from men who carry so much pain and regret. You could feel the presence of God moving in the room. 'Kairos is more than just a programme – it's a spiritual lifeline. It brings the message that no matter where you are in life, God's grace reaches you.' 'This experience has left a lasting mark on me. You may go in thinking you're there to help others, but you'll come out changed yourself,' said Koos.
