This 2-Ingredient Protein Yogurt Is My New Post-Workout Ritual

I'm always looking for ways to increase my protein intake. These amino acids are essential for repairing and maintaining the body's tissues and organs and for building muscle. But there are only so many egg whites, chicken breasts, beans, and almonds one can down before throwing in the towel and accepting a fate of lackluster gym sessions. That's when life demands a bit of creativity to reawaken the palate and make "fit food" fun again. Enter protein yogurt: a simple, two-ingredient blend of basic Greek yogurt and vanilla-flavored protein powder that yields a taste and consistency similar to frosting. How to make protein yogurt Did I mention it requires only two ingredients? Joey Skladany/CNET Making protein yogurt is so easy, it would almost certainly elicit eye rolls from Martha Stewart types, but for fast, nutritious meal options, the goal is not to impress a celebrity chef -- it's to nourish and satiate. Simply mix ¾ cups (generally a serving) of your favorite Greek yogurt and one serving scoop of vanilla or vanilla frosting-flavored protein powder together. That's it. I know what you're probably thinking: a) That's the most basic recipe in the world and b) There is no way this is going to taste like dessert. And to that I'd say, you're partially correct. Greek yogurt is high in protein and has a thick, frosting-like texture. Joey Skladany/CNET Yes, it will require less than 10 seconds of time to complete and no, I'm not here to convince you that protein powder and yogurt tastes like a treat from Magnolia Bakery. But the dynamic duo takes a very plain breakfast staple and zhuzhes it up with an additional 25 grams to 30 grams of extra protein. Protein yogurt is completely customizable Once it's done, you can eat it with fresh fruit or granola. Pamela Vachon/CNET A yogurt with a higher fat content will yield an even creamier mouthfeel. It doesn't have to be Greek, although I love the texture. You also don't have to limit yourself to whey protein, as there are plenty of other powders on the market to accommodate specific preferences and dietary needs. For our vegan friends, this includes pea, hemp and brown rice varieties that can also be mixed into dairy-free cashew, almond or coconut yogurts. Flavor is customizable based on the protein powder, as well, and you don't have to rely on the container's contents. Toss in seeds, nut butters, chocolate clips, coconut flakes or even oats for a heartier concoction. My personal favorite yogurt for this recipe is Siggi's Icelandic skyr or Fage BestSelf Lactose-Free if my tummy is feeling off. I mix them with protein powder brand EHP Labs OxyWhey in the vanilla ice cream flavor.

Sweet! Crave celebrates 20 years with a new cookbook

Time sure flies when you're eating cupcakes. Article content Article content Twenty years ago, when Sex and the City was still a taste-making show, a shot of Sarah Jessica Parker's character Carrie Bradshaw devouring a pink frosted cupcake in front of NYC's Magnolia Bakery launched thousands of cupcake shops around the world. This scene aired only a few years before Calgary got a cool cupcake bakery of our own in the form of the still-thriving Crave, but co-founders/sisters Carolyne McIntyre Jackson and Jodi Willoughby have always been more inspired by home baking in the country than big city trends. Article content Article content 'I always loved to bake. We grew up on a farm outside of High River, and I was always in the kitchen baking,' McIntyre Jackson says. 'We would always bake from scratch and never had a cake mix in our house.' Article content Article content That love of baking led to the sisters opening Crave in 2004, and they immediately garnered fanfare with their delectable cupcakes made with their mother's timeless buttercream frosting recipe. Since then, Crave has expanded to four bakeries within Calgary as well as one in Edmonton and another in Saskatoon (all selling much more than those signature cupcakes) and also sells bake-at-home products for customers who want something better than the typical grocery store brands. While the cake mixes and tubs of frosting can tide Crave fans over between trips to the bakeries, McIntyre Jackson and Willoughby wanted to share the recipes that form the backbone of their business with a cookbook. Article content Article content Article content Crave: Cupcakes, Cakes, Cookies, and More from an Iconic Bakery was released earlier this month, and the book not only stands as a document of the goods that have made it onto Crave's shelves over the years, but also as a history of the co-founders' family recipes. The sisters say every treat ever sold at Crave stems from a family recipe – either their own or one of their staff's. Those formulas were tweaked for larger production and to gussy them up a bit, but for the past 20 years, the bakery has focused on using wholesome ingredients and traditional baking techniques. Article content McIntyre Jackson and Willoughby promise that, unlike some famous restaurants and bakeshops, they haven't downgraded the recipes just a little to discourage home bakers from making exact replications instead of buying them at the shop (yes, this is a thing). Rather, the relative simplicity of the new Crave book showcases that the bakery doesn't just talk a good talk: the goods they sell really are based on good, old-fashioned home baking. While pastry decoration can be a more elusive skill, there are plenty of tips for those who want picture-perfect cupcakes.

Magnolia Bakery is giving out free banana pudding to celebrate And Just Like That season 3

And just like that, it's nearly time to reunite with our old pals Carrie Bradshaw, Miranda Hobbes and Charlotte York Goldenblatt—yes, a third (and likely unhinged) season of Max's Sex and the City spinoff series And Just Like That will hit the HBO streaming service on Thursday, May 29 and you can celebrate the show's return in especially sweet fashion thanks to Magnolia Bakery. The New York-based bakery gained national attention back in 2001 when Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) and Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) were seen visiting the company's Bleecker Street location for vanilla buttercream cupcakes and a gossip session during a season 3 episode of SATC. So it's only fitting that Magnolia would be marking the continuation of the beloved TV franchise by offering free treats to excited fans during premiere day. On May 29, you can stop by any Magnolia Bakery location in New York City (excluding the LaGuardia and Grand Central stalls) and say you're there for 'Summer in the City' to score a free cup of the bakery's iconic Banana Pudding—New York's ultimate dessert. If you haven't experienced Magnolia's creamy, dreamy take on the classic Southern dessert just yet, it features a smooth, rich vanilla pudding base layered with crisp vanilla wafers and fresh bananas. Do note, though, that only 100 cups per city will be available on a first come, first served basis on the 29th, so make sure to get in line early if you want that pudding pick-me-up. Along with Carrie's hometown of Manhattan, the Max-meets-Magnolia promotion will extend to other treat-loving cities, including Los Angeles and Chicago.
