Two arrested in 54cr angadiya cheating case

Surat: Surat crime branch police arrested two men in connection with a Rs 54-crore angadiya cheating case, in which they allegedly duped a Chhattisgarh-based firm by posing as Gujarat traders. According to police, the accused contacted Mahadev Enterprise, an angadiya firm in Chhattisgarh, claiming to be representatives of a Rajkot trader and collected money in Surat and Vadodara using bogus SIM cards. During interrogation, the duo admitted to using fake SIMs to carry out the fraud. The arrested accused are Amit Khatri (33) and Anil Mathrani (47). Acting on a tip-off, crime branch sleuths intercepted Khatri near Naginawadi bridge in Surat and seized Rs 9.30 lakh cash from him. Mathrani was later arrested from his native Badarkha village in Ahmedabad district. Police said both men were involved in cricket betting and routinely obtained fake SIM cards from Palanpur to call angadiya firms across India, posing as wealthy traders. They would collect cash in different cities and never return it. Investigators revealed that both accused have past criminal records. Khatri is booked in a cheating case in Amreli, while Mathrani faces three cheating cases in Nandod (Narmada), DCB Ahmedabad, and Yavatmal (Maharashtra). The crime branch has seized four mobile phones and four SIM cards from the duo and suspects that other accomplices are involved in the racket.
