Two arrested in 54cr angadiya cheating case
According to police, the accused contacted Mahadev Enterprise, an angadiya firm in Chhattisgarh, claiming to be representatives of a Rajkot trader and collected money in Surat and Vadodara using bogus SIM cards. During interrogation, the duo admitted to using fake SIMs to carry out the fraud.
The arrested accused are Amit Khatri (33) and Anil Mathrani (47). Acting on a tip-off, crime branch sleuths intercepted Khatri near Naginawadi bridge in Surat and seized Rs 9.30 lakh cash from him.
Mathrani was later arrested from his native Badarkha village in Ahmedabad district.
Police said both men were involved in cricket betting and routinely obtained fake SIM cards from Palanpur to call angadiya firms across India, posing as wealthy traders. They would collect cash in different cities and never return it.
Investigators revealed that both accused have past criminal records. Khatri is booked in a cheating case in Amreli, while Mathrani faces three cheating cases in Nandod (Narmada), DCB Ahmedabad, and Yavatmal (Maharashtra).
The crime branch has seized four mobile phones and four SIM cards from the duo and suspects that other accomplices are involved in the racket.

Punjab Vigilance Bureau busts fake heavy vehicle driving licence racket, arrests 4
The Punjab Vigilance Bureau has unearthed a major corruption racket involving the issuance of fake heavy vehicle driving licences, and arrested a motor vehicle inspector (MVI) among four accused. This case has exposed a nexus between officials of the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) Gurdaspur, the State Institute of Automobile and Driving Skills Centre (SIADS) Mahuana in Sri Muktsar Sahib district, and private document agents operating in Gurdaspur district, officers said on Tuesday. The four key accused arrested so far are Sukhdev Singh (MVI, LMV and GI driving in-charge at SIADS Mahuana), Amit Kumar alias Shelly (Shelly Documents Centre), Jagpreet Singh (Punjab Documents), and Rakesh Kumar (former RTA data entry operator, currently posted at SDM Office Batala). Based on a complaint filed by a resident of Pathankot, an FIR was registered on Monday against seven accused under relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act, Information Technology Act, and Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at the VB police station (Amritsar range). The Bureau then launched an investigation against Pratibha Sharma, a data entry operator at RTA Gurdaspur, a spokesperson said in a statement. It was revealed during investigation that 23 out of 51 driving training certificates purportedly issued by SIADS Mahuana were found to be fake, as only 27 legitimate certificate numbers were on record. Crucially, system-generated fields like the unique certificate number, QR code, and embedded cellphone number on the receipt could only be altered by institute officials, making these vital markers of authenticity. 'Any mismatch among these parameters confirmed fraudulent creation,' the Bureau spokesperson said, adding the investigation pointed to the role of private agents including Kulbir Documents, Shelly Documents and GMD Documents, and Punjab Documents centres — in sourcing applicants, and facilitating forged documentation in exchange for bribes. Financial trails showed direct payments from these agents into the bank accounts of Pratibha and Rakesh. Sukhdev misused his access to the system to generate fake certificates, causing direct financial loss to the state exchequer by illegally claiming Rs 430 (government fee) per certificate. Raids are being conducted, and the remaining three accused — including Pratibha — will be arrested soon, officers said, adding further investigation is underway.

Punjab: NIA conducts searches in 3 border districts
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Tuesday conducted searches at 19 locations across Punjab in connection with the terror grenade attack on a temple in Amritsar in March this year. On the night of March 14, terrorists, backed by foreign-based handlers, had hurled a grenade at Thakur Dwara Sanatan Temple, Sher Shah Road, Amritsar. The NIA teams seized several incriminating materials, including mobile phones and digital devices, during the searches carried out in the border districts of Amritsar, Gurdaspur and Batala. On the night of March 14, terrorists, backed by foreign-based handlers, had hurled a grenade at Thakur Dwara Sanatan Temple, Sher Shah Road, Amritsar. The incident was one of the many recent grenade attacks carried out by operatives of different terror groups in the state of Punjab, on the directions of their handlers based abroad. During investigation in the case, NIA found that the attack was carried out by accused Gursidak Singh (now deceased) and Vishal Gill. 'Gursidak was in contact with foreign based handlers, who recruited India-based individuals and conspired to spread terror by providing grenades/explosives and funds. The handlers radicalised vulnerable youth and induced them to unleash terror in lieu of money and drugs,' the NIA said in a statement. 'Gursidak Singh and Vishal Gill were involved in multiple instances of picking and dropping of grenades, weapons etc., as per the NIA investigations, which are continuing,' it added.

Tambaram civic staff suspended for swindling over Rs 1.3 crore in tax payments; fraud exposed in audit
CHENNAI: Tambaram Corporation has suspended two staff members attached to its revenue department on charges of swindling over Rs 1.3 crore in tax collected from residents. The highest swindle was about Rs 1 crore by a staffer in zone 4 during the last financial year. The employee, identified as Rani, submitted fake bank receipts to the corporation without depositing the actual collection. Officials said she allegedly admitted to the wrongdoing during questioning. The amount was recovered, and departmental proceedings have been initiated against her and others involved. In another case of misappropriation, a cashier in zone 5, Murali, diverted Rs 32 lakh between January and March this year by collecting property tax, water tax, and other dues in cash, but recording them as card payments in the official system. Officials said that since card transactions typically take 24 hours to reflect in the corporation's bank accounts, he was able to pocket the funds without detection as the fraud was not immediately detected. The issue came to light during an internal audit of the corporation's accounts, initiated on the orders of corporation commissioner S Balachander. Murali was suspended, and the amount has been recovered from him. Vijayalakshmi, an official in zone 5, has been issued a memo for failing to monitor the tax collection. A senior official told TNIE that further probes are on to determine if more such irregularities occurred. 'Once the full extent of the fraud is known, stringent disciplinary and legal action, including filing police complaints, will be taken against those found guilty,' the official said. Officials said the civic body has been ensuring strict action on wrongdoings and will continue with its internal audits.
