The announcement was made by central election officer Harsh Malhotra during the party's state council meeting held in Dehradun, where chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, state in-charge Dushyant Gautam, and other senior party leaders, were present. "I extend my heartfelt thanks and gratitude to all the senior leaders, party workers, and council members for this opportunity," he said. "Heartfelt gratitude to central leadership, CM Dhami": BJP MP Mahendra Bhatt on being re-elected as Uttarakhand BJP chief
Dehradun (Uttarakhand) [India], July 1 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party MP Mahendra Bhatt expressed gratitude to the BJP's central leadership and Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on being re-elected as Uttarakhand BJP president. Speaking to ANI, Mahendra Bhatt emphasised that party's focus will be on winning the upcoming Panchayat elections and State Assembly polls. Its house in order, BJP retains Uttarakhand chief: Who is Mahendra Bhatt?
BJP Rajya Sabha MP Mahendra Bhatt was re-elected as the party's Uttarakhand state president on Tuesday, becoming the only leader to hold the post twice. A native of Chamoli in the Garhwal region, Bhatt is a two-time MLA. The decision to retain him signals the BJP's intent to strike a social and regional balance in a state where Brahmins and Thakurs collectively make up 60% of the population. While Bhatt is a Brahmin, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami belongs to the Thakur community. Bhatt's reappointment also continues the BJP's trend of appointing Brahmins as state chiefs. Before him, Madan Kaushik, another Brahmin from Garhwal, was at the helm of the state unit. Kaushik's predecessor Bansidhar Bhagat was also a Brahmin, but from the Kumaon region. Bhatt's re-election indicates there is almost no concern in the state BJP about anti-incumbency after consecutive Assembly poll victories in 2017 and 2022 and that the party is in calm waters ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections. 'Bhatt has helped the BJP win all elections in the state. He has been able to carve a direction for the organisation and hence his nomination was endorsed by all senior leaders of the party,' Dhami said after the senior leader filed his nomination on Monday. Though leaders such as Kedarnath MLA Asha Nautiyal were seen to be in the running, Bhatt was the only leader to file his nomination. However, his next tenure won't be without challenges. The party's relationship with communities in the hills took a hit after Prem Chand Aggarwal made 'objectionable remarks' about Paharis (residents of the hill areas) in March, triggering widespread protests and forcing him to step down as finance minister. Bhatt's immediate challenge will be to repair any lingering animus in the hill communities and steer the party through the panchayat elections scheduled for next month. In the last urban local polls, held in January across 89 local bodies, the BJP won 32 while the Congress secured victory in 27. In the municipal council elections, the Congress marginally performed better, winning 14 chairperson posts as against the BJP's 13. Close ties with Sangh Bhatt made his foray into politics in 1991 with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the RSS's student wing, and served as the state secretary of the Uttaranchal Yuva Morcha in undivided Uttar Pradesh. He spent 15 days in jail during the Ram Janmabhoomi movement as well as the Uttarakhand statehood movement. After Uttarakhand was carved out in 2000, Bhatt became the general secretary of the Yuva Morcha. In Uttarakhand's first Assembly election in 2002, he successfully contested from Nandprayag against the Congress's Satendra Bartwal. Five years later, he unsuccessfully contested from Badrinath. Having skipped the 2012 elections, he finally won from Badrinath in 2017. However, he lost the seat to the Congress's Rajendra Singh Bhandari in 2022 and was made a Rajya Sabha MP two years later. 'Bhatt comes from a humble background and steadily rose through the ranks. He enjoys a good relationship with Dhami and also with the BJP as well as the RSS, which made him a good fit to lead the party in Uttarakhand. His appointment also helps the party balance social and regional aspects,' said a senior leader who has known Bhatt since his ABVP days. Bhatt's re-election also shows the BJP's continued faith in him following the party's electoral victories after he took over just after the 2022 Assembly elections. Last year, the BJP won all five Lok Sabha seats in the state, but lost the Manglaur and Badrinath Assembly bypolls that July (the party improved its performance in Manglaur). Under Bhatt, the party also put up an impressive performance in the recent mayoral polls, winning 10 of the 11 seats.
