GST scam: Vehicles towed by police but e-way bills issued
1 2 Hyderabad: In two recent cases of GST fraud uncovered by the commercial taxes department, an interesting modus operandi involving empty vehicles came to light. In one case, a fraudulent company's overly cautious efforts to avoid official scrutiny raised suspicions. In another, after officials discovered that an immobile car was being used to generate fake e-way bills, the vehicle was towed to a police station. Remarkably, the fraudsters, unaware that the car had been impounded, continued to generate fake e-way bills using the department's application. Despite this, multiple e-way bills were issued using the vehicle's registration number by various taxpayers, even though no goods were actually being transported. "After identifying this pattern, the vehicle was impounded, yet even a week later, e-way bills were still being generated. The situation grew more suspicious when the registered owner denied any knowledge of the vehicle, raising concerns of its misuse in GST fraud," said sources. This activity constitutes a violation of the central goods and services tax (CGST) Act, 2017, and is believed to involve criminal intent under Sections 318 and 336 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). A separate complaint has been lodged to initiate an FIR against the vehicle owner. Bid to conceal scam In another case involving a city-based company, fake invoices were generated by pretending that copper materials were being transported in empty vehicles. The fraud was detected due to company's unusual level of caution. "The company owner instructed the driver to park the vehicle, take photographs, and ensure the vehicle appeared on CCTV footage. This behaviour drew attention, and officials intercepted the empty vehicles at the Kamkole tollgate between Nizamabad and Maharashtra. While the company tried to conceal the scam by hiding the vehicles, occasional lapses revealed they were in fact empty," the sources said.

Tensions flare over Masjid-e-Ibrahim land dispute in Mallepally
A dispute over the historic Masjid-e-Ibrahim land in Mallepally has sparked a political and community-led protest, after an attempt to enforce a court order triggered concern among local residents and religious groups. The row escalated on Wednesday afternoon when Habeeb Nagar police personnel, along with court officials, arrived near a function hall in the area to execute a civil court directive concerning the land's ownership. Their presence was met with a strong protest by locals, who feared a bid to transfer control of the mosque to another party. AIMIM MLA Majid Hussain, along with party workers, the local corporator, and religious scholars, led the protest from the front. The MLA also offered prayers at the mosque and addressed the media, vowing to secure a stay order from the court by presenting the necessary documentation. He said AIMIM members had remained at the site overnight in anticipation of the move. GHMC claims Habeeb Nagar police Inspector T. Purushottam Rao said: 'Claims were raised by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) that the land in question is government property. However, local residents insist that the site is a place of worship and must remain so. The dispute stems from a civil case, where the court ruled in favour of one Abdul Mukheed. The opposing party is understood to belong to the Anjuman backward class Muslim minority community.' The Inspector confirmed that nearly 50 personnel were deployed for security. 'The court directed us to provide protection in a property matter. The GHMC has claimed ownership, while the community says it is a place of worship. The situation ended with the parties deciding to take the matter to court,' the officer informed. Student organisations accuse corporate colleges of ‘rank scam,' demand action
Leaders of student organisations have accused certain corporate college managements of resorting to what they call the 'Ranks' scam.' At a press conference in Vijayawada on Thursday, Student Federation of India (SFI) state secretary Prasanna Kumar alleged that after the JEE (Advanced)-2025 results were announced on June 2, many corporate colleges began making false claims that the top rankers belonged to their respective coaching centre or institution. Citing examples, he said: 'Majid Hussain, who secured an all-India 3rd rank, was falsely claimed as a student of a private college, while in reality he attended coaching classes at a private academy in Madhya Pradesh. Similarly, Akshat Kumar, who secured an all-India 6th rank, did not study in a private college as claimed by them but was a student of another private academy.' He added that in the race to garner a bigger pie of the student talent for the next academic batches, these corporate colleges made false claims over successful students' ranks to deceive students and parents. He said: 'There was a sharp decline in enrolments in these colleges as a large number of students were resorting to taking the extreme step of suicide. The government must take measures to check these fraudulent practices.' The leaders of the All-India Students Federation (AISF) also made similar charges against educational institutions and have said that the practice of multiple institutions claiming credit for the success of a single candidate in entrance exams can be misleading for parents. They demanded action against Telugu film actors, who serve as brand ambassadors for these institutions.
