13MP construction projects to leverage modern tech for efficiency
KUALA LUMPUR: The 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) will focus on modern construction technologies like the Industrialised Building System (IBS) and Building Information Modelling (BIM) to improve efficiency and quality. Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan highlighted that these methods will speed up project completion while cutting material waste and costs. The plan also aims to build one million affordable homes over a decade through government and private sector collaboration. Transit-oriented development (TOD) will be expanded to better link housing with public transport networks. Amir Hamzah noted that Bumiputera contractors have a significant role in driving sustainable and inclusive development under the 13MP. He spoke at the Malaysian Bumiputera Contractors Association (PKBM) dinner during its 6th AGM. The minister launched the PKBM BIM Satellite Centre, a joint effort with CIDB E-Construct Services Sdn Bhd. The centre will train contractors in BIM, now mandatory for projects worth RM10 million and above. Contractors will receive guidance on applying BIM across all construction phases, from planning to maintenance. This initiative aims to boost efficiency, reduce waste, and support Malaysia's construction industry digital transformation. The move aligns with the MADANI Government's vision for a more productive and transparent sector. - Bernama

PKBM BIM Satellite Centre to boost digital construction skills in Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Bumiputera Contractors Association (PKBM) has launched the PKBM BIM Satellite Centre to address digital technology challenges in the construction sector. Located in Section 13, Shah Alam, the training centre aims to equip contractors with skills in Building Information Modelling (BIM) and other advanced technologies. PKBM president Datuk Dr Azman Yusoff highlighted the centre's collaboration with CIDB E-Construct Services Sdn Bhd, which donated 15 computers for training programmes. 'Terms like BIM, IoT, and drone mapping are common globally, but many Malaysian contractors are still adapting,' he said during the PKBM Sixth Annual General Meeting. Azman noted that limited access to resources and support has slowed technology adoption among local contractors. Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan attended the event, underscoring government support for digital transformation in construction. The centre will begin operations next month, initially training PKBM contractors to reduce reliance on foreign labour. Azman stressed that digitalisation is now a necessity for survival in the competitive construction industry. He urged Bumiputera contractors to step out of their comfort zones to remain professionally competitive. PKBM also proposed reducing tender margins from 15% to 10% to align with current market conditions. The association called for the reinstatement of the Variation of Price (VOP) mechanism to manage sudden material cost hikes. Azman praised CIDB and DOSM's collaboration in monitoring construction material prices to prevent market manipulation. He expressed hope for increased budget allocations for small contractors in the upcoming 2026 Budget. - Bernama

Construction projects under 13MP will leverage modern technology, says Amir Hamzah
Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan. KUALA LUMPUR: The use of modern technologies such as the Industrialised Building System (IBS) and Building Information Modelling (BIM), which enhance efficiency, transparency and the quality of construction work, will be emphasised in projects under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan said this approach is expected to accelerate project completion time, reduce wastage of building materials and lower overall construction costs. "In addition, the 13MP also targets the construction of one million affordable housing units over 10 years by the government and private developers, integrating public housing at more reasonable prices. At the same time, transit-oriented development (TOD) will be expanded to integrate housing with public transportation systems. "This presents a major opportunity for bumiputra contractors to play a key role in realising the aspirations of sustainable and inclusive national development," he said at the dinner ceremony in conjunction with the 6th annual general meeting of the Malaysian Bumiputera Contractors Association (PKBM) on Monday (Aug 11) night. The minister also launched the PKBM BIM Satellite Centre – a strategic initiative between PKBM and CIDB E-Construct Services Sdn Bhd. The centre will function as a training hub to produce contractors skilled in using BIM technology, which has now become a fundamental requirement in projects worth RM10mil and above. "Through the PKBM BIM Satellite Centre, contractors will be comprehensively guided and trained to apply BIM at every phase of construction – from planning and design to maintenance. "This initiative will not only improve efficiency and transparency in projects but also reduce waste and boost overall productivity, thereby supporting the digital transformation of Malaysia's construction industry in line with the aspirations of the Madani Government," he said. – Bernama
