Crosby AND Malkin Named to Quarter Century Team
It will come as no surprise to anyone who has seen a hockey game in the last 25 years that Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby was one of the first players named to the NHL's Quarter Century Team. Perhaps the slight surprise is that teammate Evgeni Malkin, who is far more than deserving but perennially snubbed for such honors, was also named to the team. The Quarter-Century Team was selected through a two-stage campaign that included input from NHL officials, followed by a league-wide fan vote. Advertisement Crosby and Malkin were both selected, though teammate Kris Letang was not. Beginning on Jan. 1, 2000 through today, Crosby ranks at or near the top in every major regular-season category, including games played (1,311, 14th), goals (602, 2nd), assists (1,035, 2nd), points (1,637, 1st) game-winning goals (93, 3rd) and overtime goals (22, 2nd). Crosby's trophy cabinet is full. He has three Stanley Cups, three Ted Lindsay awards, two Hart Trophies, 'Rocket' Richard trophies, Conn Smythe trophies, and Art Ross Trophies. He also became the 26th member of the Triple Gold Club by winning a Stanley Cup, Olympic Gold Medal (2010, '14), and World Championship (2015). Crosby is the only member of the Club to have captained all three teams. Advertisement Crosby is generally considered a top-five player of all time, with Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Gordie Howe and Bobby Orr. This season, Crosby broke Gretzky's mark with his 20th consecutive season of at least a point per game. Malkin has come a long way since 'Three years, Super League,' the phrase he used as a rookie to win an argument with Crosby over who should go last onto the ice moments before their first warmup together in the 2006-07 season. Malkin had to go to extraordinary lengths just to make it to the NHL, hiding in the Helsinki airport and a local apartment just to get away from his Russian team that used military tactics to keep him. The 6-foot-3, 210-pound forward has scored 514 goals, 832 assists and 1,346 points, which rank sixth, fifth and fourth, respectively, among all players since 2000. Advertisement In the playoffs, Malkin has been 'Fire,' registering 180 points (67-113-180). He ranks second behind only Crosby over the last 25 years of playoff performances. Malkin reached the 100-point mark three times during his career, first during the 2007-08 season, then '08-09 and '11-12 seasons. He is one of eight players to do so three or more times. He also reached the 50-goal mark during the '11-12 season, the year he won the Hart Trophy. While Crosby has 10 All-Star nods, Malkin has seven and five First-Team NHL All-Star awards, two Art Ross Trophies (2009, '12), one Hart Trophy (2012), one Ted Lindsay Award (2012), one Calder Trophy (2007), and one Conn Smythe Trophy (2009). He's also been voted Team MVP by his teammates on five separate occasions. Malkin has also set the standard among Russian players with 832 assists. He ranks second in goals (514) and points (1,346) among all Russian-born players. The post Crosby AND Malkin Named to Quarter Century Team appeared first on Pittsburgh Hockey Now.

Bay of Plenty dog owners banned from breeding after child attacked, hospitalised
It has been more than two years since the girl, who has name suppression, suffered the serious injuries, but her mother still replays the event and wonders what more she could have done to protect her daughter. This week, the Black Russian terrier's owners, Richard Malkin and Sheree Kearney, were sentenced in the Tauranga District Court, where emotions ran high as the child's mother read her victim impact statement. 'You both stood by as my mother and I fought that dog off my daughter,' she said, as she fought back tears. 'And it makes me so cross that you never at any time put your body in front of my daughter. She was 5 and screaming for her mum.' The mother had taken two of her children, and her mother, to collect a puppy from the dog breeders when the sire attacked the young schoolgirl. The mother told the court the attack had a profound impact, and while the girl had physically recovered, there were ongoing effects. 'A harmless encounter with a puppy at the lake caused her to jump off the end of the jetty in terror, even though she had no ability to swim,' she said, referring to a later incident involving a different dog. The mother remains angry at Malkin and Kearney, and questions their remorse. She feels their regret centres on 'being caught'. At the sentencing, it was heard the family followed Malkin and Kearney's instructions, as they had done on a previous visit without incident, to text before coming onto the property so the adult dogs could be locked in the house. However, as the mother was arranging a bank transfer, and her daughter was with the puppies, she heard Malkin say, 'Oh my God, he's out'. The sire, named Echo, went straight for the girl. The mother told NZME before sentencing that her daughter was lifted off the ground during the attack. The girl's grandmother had managed to pry open the dog's mouth, pull out the girl's hand, and stop the attack. Kearney and Malkin were prosecuted by the Western Bay of Plenty District Council and, after a resolution was reached, pleaded guilty to the charge of owning a dog that attacked and caused serious injury to the child. Kearney's lawyer Rachael Adams acknowledged the 'deeply traumatic experience for the child,' which had left 'physical and emotional scars'. She said both Malkin and Kearney were 'deeply distressed and deeply remorseful for the attack and the injuries to the child'. The only aspect of the mother's impact statement Adams wanted to clarify was the suggestion the pair had done nothing to intervene. Adams said their account was that Kearney lost her balance and fell over, and the summary of facts said Malkin had 'attempted to grab and control [the dog] without success'. Judge Paul Geoghegan noted this aspect of the events remained in dispute. Adams told the judge Malkin and Kearney had a system for containing the dogs, which included two sets of doors and reversed door handles that had to be pushed upwards. There was a latch lock on one of the doors. She said it still wasn't clear exactly how the dogs got out. Adams said someone must have made a mistake, but 'quite how, and at what point, may never be known'. Kearney recalled shutting both doors, but accepted the latch lock was not in place, and believed this may have been how they got out. Adams referred to material from a vet and a dog trainer, provided to the court, which suggested the pair, and in particular Kearney, had been responsible dog owners. 'Despite this being a loved pet, without hesitation, Ms Kearney and Mr Malkin had the dog put down the following day... It's to their credit and a reflection... of their responsible dog ownership.' Adams said part of an agreement with the council meant Kearney would be disqualified from owning dogs. 'As a lifelong dog owner and animal-lover, this is a deeply distressing consequence for her,' Adams said. However, the girl's mother told Judge Geoghegan she understood this hadn't been the first time the dog had been aggressive, and the pair knew they had a dangerous dog. 'I believe it was preventable and I do not believe this was a one-off,' she told the judge. But the judge said the only information the court had was that they had been, until the time of the attack, responsible dog owners. 'That is the evidence before me...' he said. 'This is not a case where an owner has, despite knowing problems with an animal, released the animal from private property onto public property. Or who has failed to make any effort or attempt to secure the dogs.' Judge Geoghegan said, 'while tragic', the incident was possibly the result of an 'oversight'. He offered words of reassurance that there was nothing the mother could have done to prevent the incident and she should not feel responsible. The judge ordered both Malkin and Kearney to pay an emotional harm payment of $1500 each. 'The actions taken by the council effectively mean the dog breeding business you had previously undertaken has come to a halt, that is a significant penalty in itself.' The Western Bay of Plenty District Council confirmed an agreement between the council and the defendants was reached after consultation with the victim's family. The agreement meant that while both pleaded guilty, the council undertook to disqualify only Kearney, who was the dog's owner, provided Malkin agreed not to breed any dogs – either commercially or for private purposes. 'The council considered that this was the best outcome in the public interest,' a statement from the council said.

South Carolina bill aims to limit offensive content in schools
Columbia S.C. (WSPA) – There's a push in the final weeks of this year's session to pass a bill that would affect students in South Carolina. If passed, teachers and schools could face consequences if they discuss topics or content seen as 'offensive' or 'obscene' with students. 'This material would not be, like I said, allowed on TV, wouldn't be allowed on the radio,' said Representative April Cromer (R – Anderson). 'So why are we exposing our children to it? There's a time and a place for those materials, and the schoolhouse is not that place.' The bill would change the state's current obscenity laws by making the definition of 'harmful to minors' more strict. Small parts of a book would be considered 'inappropriate' if they contain obscene or graphic material. The South Carolina Code of Laws defines obscenity, but the bill would redefine it. 'Categorizing an absurdly amount of speech as obscene. This bill is a far-reaching attack on South Carolinians first amendment rights,' Josh Malkin, American Civil Liberties Union. Cromer said that as the bill's sponsor, it is crucial to protect children. 'We've had parents that have complained and called in all over the state with concerns of what the material that their children are being exposed to,' Cromer said. Malkin strongly opposes this bill. He testified and said if this bill is passed, a potty-training book would be seen as 'obscene.' He said since there was a minor in the room while he was testifying, if this bill was a current law, he could be in trouble. 'I think if Bill 4123 were to pass, a bill that categorizes a mention of excretion as sexual activity. My testimony where I talked about excretion in the book 'Everybody Poops' could technically be considered a violation of that bill,' said Malkin. Representative Travis Moore said this bill has significant constitutional bill is still in discussion in the House and will likely not pass this year. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
