Mandya: As part of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on June 26, Mandya deputy commissioner Kumara instructed officials to organise awareness programmes on the harmful effects of drugs, alcohol and tobacco across the district. During a district-level meeting of Narco coordination centre committee at the DC's office on Friday, Kumara emphasised the need to raise awareness at district, taluk, and gram panchayat levels. He said the use of drugs is increasing in engineering and medical colleges and asked officials to closely monitor drug trafficking in and around schools and colleges. Kumara also highlighted the possibility of illegal drug cultivation in forest areas and instructed forest department officials to investigate any suspicious activity and take strict action if any such cultivation or trafficking is found. 67 villages in Mandya district identified as flood-prone areas

The Mandya district administration on Friday held a review meeting to assess its preparations to tackle any monsoon-related incident that could result in loss of life and reduce damage to property. Deputy Commissioner Kumar, who chaired the Mandya District Disaster Management Authority, said that the monsoon was setting in and there was a possibility of excess rainfall in the district. Hence, the officials should brace up to meet the challenge, he said. Dr. Kumar said control rooms should function round the clock and fire services, CESC (electricity), forest, tahsildars, and urban local bodies should establish control rooms. The public should also be provided with contact numbers of these control rooms, he added. The officials from the Fire Department were instructed to ensure that boats, life jackets, and other equipment required during heavy rainfall were in proper condition and ready for use, when required. A list of skilled swimmers should also be prepared, said the Deputy Commissioner. In Mandya district, 67 villages have been identified as flood-prone areas, and officials were instructed to visit the places to assess the situation. Tahsildars were also instructed to open relief centres if required apart from ensuring the availability of basic facilities. The Deputy Commissioner directed the Forest Department personnel to remove weak trees and branches and work in coordination with the CESC. Other issues such as activating health committees, organising awareness campaigns on water-borne diseases, etc., were discussed. The meeting also took note of the possibility of increase in snake bite cases during the rainy season and hospitals were told to stock anti-venoms in adequate quantity. Dr. Kumar said that under State Disaster Response Fund, a total of ₹2 crore was already available with all the taluks and additional funds would be released if needed. Superintendent of Police Mallikarjun Baladandi called for inter-departmental coordination during emergencies and said that all officials should adhere to the guidelines issues by the district administration.
