Sundowns must tackle player discontent before its too late

It's almost unheard of for players at Sundowns to effectively down tools in an attempt to force moves The growing uncertainty surrounding several unhappy players at Mamelodi Sundown should never have been allowed to fester for this long. The club ought to have nipped the issue in the bud well before the new PSL season kicked off. Sundowns warning If the powers that be at Chloorkop aren't careful, the culture of a quiet and honest changing room could soon become a thing of the past. It's almost unheard of for players at Sundowns to effectively down tools in an attempt to force moves, yet that seems to be exactly what's unfolding. ALSO READ: Sundowns reject offer for Mudau, player wants improved terms Failure by the club's hierarchy to act decisively sends the wrong message to promising youngsters like Siyabonga Mabena and Malibongwe Khoza. It sets a dangerous precedent if senior players are allowed to operate on their own terms without accountability. This is not necessarily about whether the players are right or wrong, it's about poor leadership. The issues involving Lucas Ribeiro, Khuliso Mudau, Thembinkosi Lorch and Peter Shalulile have been allowed to drag on unresolved for far too long. That indecision has now put head coach Miguel Cardoso in an undesirable position, forced to deflect questions that should be directed to the club's leadership. Lorch, for example, was clearly a Rulani Mokwena signing. Once Mokwena left, Lorch's place in the squad became uncertain. His loan to Wydad Casablanca wasn't surprising. However, what is surprising is why the club is now struggling to offload him when he's clearly not in Cardoso's plans The club now finds itself in an embarrassing situation, with certain players seemingly absconding from training and breaking their contractual obligations. Lorch hasn't returned to training since his loan spell in Morocco ended, and Mudau also failed to report for pre-season preparations at the Royal Marang Hotel in Rustenburg. Shalulile influence on the wane Even in Shalulile's case, the way he was used sparingly by Cardoso raised questions about his future. The Namibian striker was given just 13 minutes in the final match against Fluminense at the FIFA Club World Cup, and it doesn't take a genius to realise his influence has waned. To be fair, a player of Shalulile's stature, and one chasing the PSL all-time goalscoring record, deserves far more respect ALSO READ: Sundowns' Cardoso deflects questions on absent stars The Ribeiro situation is slightly more complex. Everyone knew his time in the PSL would be short-lived because he's simply outgrown the domestic league. Sundowns have aspirations of becoming a global football brand, but these unresolved matters have exposed organisational shortcomings.

Majority of Proline bettors backed Pacers upset NBA title win

The Thunder's first-ever NBA championship since moving to Oklahoma City wasn't a popular bet among Proline players. Oklahoma City captured the league title Sunday night with a 103-91 win over the Indiana Pacers in the seventh and deciding game of the series. But according to the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp., 64 per cent of players had the Pacers pulling off the upset while only 36 per cent of bets had the game going under 216.5 points. Meanwhile in soccer, the FIFA club World Cup is underway with some Proline bettors faring well so far. A $69 bet on Manchester City to beat Al Ain by an exact score of 6-0 returned $1,617 while a $65 wager on Red Bull Salzburg and Al-Hilal finishing tied 0-0 earned $1,490. Another bettor won $2,267 from a $32 wager on Borussia Dortmund leading Mamelodi Sundown by an exact score of 3-1 after the first half. In baseball, the Toronto Blue Jays earned a 7-1 home win over the Chicago White Sox on Saturday night. A whopping 80 per cent of wagers were on the Jays to win while 95 per cent were on them to win the game by two runs. And on the PGA Tour, Keegan Bradley captured the Travelers Championship with a birdie on the 18th hole to earn a one-shot win over Tommy Fleetwood. A $20 bet on Bradley earned one Proline player a $700 return. A Proline retail bettor received $2,009 from a $12 bet on a four-leg soccer parlay while another won $1,418 from a $5 wager on an eight-leg baseball parlay. And a third player wagered $99 on a three-pick tennis parlay that paid out $2,168. A digital player earned $1,294 from a $10 bet on a nine-game baseball parlay. Pitso Mosimane addresses links to Orlando Pirates job amid coaching changes

Pitso not ruling anything out Former Mamelodi Sundown coach Pitso Mosimane has been linked with the soon-to-be vacant Orlando Pirates job in recent weeks. Photo: Muzi Ntombela/BackpagePix Former Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Pitso Mosimane has opened up about the reports linking him with the soon-to-be vacant Orlando Pirates job. The Soweto giants dropped a bombshell earlier this month when they announced that Jose Riveiro will be leaving the club at the end of the season. The Spaniard has had a somewhat successful time as the club's coach, and has led them to three MTN 8 titles and two Nedbank Cups. They are currently on course to win a third Nedbank Cup, and have a date with rivals Kaizer Chiefs in the final in Durban next month. Also, they are putting up a good fight in trying to dethrone Sundowns – who have won seven successive league titles – as the undisputed kings of South African football.
