Majority of Proline bettors backed Pacers upset NBA title win

The Thunder's first-ever NBA championship since moving to Oklahoma City wasn't a popular bet among Proline players.
Oklahoma City captured the league title Sunday night with a 103-91 win over the Indiana Pacers in the seventh and deciding game of the series. But according to the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp., 64 per cent of players had the Pacers pulling off the upset while only 36 per cent of bets had the game going under 216.5 points.
Meanwhile in soccer, the FIFA club World Cup is underway with some Proline bettors faring well so far.
A $69 bet on Manchester City to beat Al Ain by an exact score of 6-0 returned $1,617 while a $65 wager on Red Bull Salzburg and Al-Hilal finishing tied 0-0 earned $1,490.
Another bettor won $2,267 from a $32 wager on Borussia Dortmund leading Mamelodi Sundown by an exact score of 3-1 after the first half.
In baseball, the Toronto Blue Jays earned a 7-1 home win over the Chicago White Sox on Saturday night. A whopping 80 per cent of wagers were on the Jays to win while 95 per cent were on them to win the game by two runs.
And on the PGA Tour, Keegan Bradley captured the Travelers Championship with a birdie on the 18th hole to earn a one-shot win over Tommy Fleetwood. A $20 bet on Bradley earned one Proline player a $700 return.
A Proline retail bettor received $2,009 from a $12 bet on a four-leg soccer parlay while another won $1,418 from a $5 wager on an eight-leg baseball parlay. And a third player wagered $99 on a three-pick tennis parlay that paid out $2,168.
A digital player earned $1,294 from a $10 bet on a nine-game baseball parlay.

The Whitecaps (13-5-6) start their stretch run on the road against the struggling San Jose Earthquakes (7-10-8) on Saturday. Vancouver has played 35 games across all competitions since February. Many players, such as Canadian Jayden Nelson and American Brian White, the team's leading scorer with 11 goals, also played international matches for their country. The Whitecaps are enjoying one of the best seasons in franchise history, managing an impressive 17-7-11 across all competitions, but the number of games and extensive travel has taken a toll. 'I feel like I played a season already and we have a lot of games left,' Nelson, a forward from Brampton, Ont., said after a training session this week. 'We want to continue, we want to make a real push in MLS this year. 'It's going to be interesting. We're pushing toward something big this year.' Head coach Jesper Sorensen said the break was badly needed. 'It was necessary,' said Sorensen. 'I think this was the last opportunity to give everybody a break. 'I hope it's going to be beneficial. I think everybody needed it also mentally, also the staff.' Vancouver heads into the weekend sitting second in the MLS Western Conference with 45 points, just one back of division leader San Diego and five behind overall league-leading Philadelphia. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. They will face an Earthquakes team that is 10th in the West, one point back of Colorado for the final playoff spot. San Jose is 1-3-3 in its last seven MLS games. Sorensen said the Earthquakes play 'a little bit different' than other teams the Whitecaps have faced recently. 'They're very aggressive in the defensive style of play,' he said. 'We like to play a game where it's a little bit more closed and we play closer to each other. They want the pitch to be longer and with a lot more spaces for some of their offensive players. 'It's going to be challenging and different for us.' The Whitecaps are also dealing with several key injuries. Captain Ryan Gauld has been sidelined since March 8 with a knee capsule sprain. The 29-year-old from Aberdeen, Scotland, had a career-high 17 goals and led the team with 16 assists in 37 starts and 41 appearances across all competitions last season. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. The Whitecaps have also lost two defenders for the rest of the season. Centre back Ranko Veselinović suffered an ACL tear in July, while Canadian left back Sam Adekugbe went down with an Achilles tendon tear in early June. Ecuadorian midfielder Pedro Vite left Vancouver in a transfer to Liga Mx side Pumas UNAM. 'We have been a little bit short on players,' said Sorensen. 'It's a little tricky all the time. You have to try to manage players, and we have all these games. 'It's what happens throughout the course of the season. That's why a team needs a coach.' Midfielder Sebastian Berhalter said the Whitecaps have been able to adapt. 'You keep chugging along,' he said. 'Guys keep stepping up. I think this group has done a really good job. Guys have come in and made a difference.' This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. Müller, who led Germany to a World Cup title in 2014, is expected to arrive in Vancouver on Wednesday, with his first training session set for Thursday. There's speculation he could dress for the Whitecaps next home game Aug. 17 against Houston. 'We're going to do everything we can to make sure that he'll get on the pitch as fast as possible,' said Sorensen. VANCOUVER WHITECAPS (13-5-6) at SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES (7-10-8) PayPal Park, Saturday, 7:30 p.m. RECORD PACE: The Whitecaps are just three wins away from setting a franchise record for points in a single MLS season. The 'Caps had a 16-13-5 record for 53 points in 2015 when they finished second in the Western Conference and third overall. HOMECOOKING: Six of Vancouver's remaining MLS games will be played at home. The Whitecaps have a 7-2-2 home record. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. TWISTING ROAD: Heading into Saturday the Whitecaps have 22 points (6-3-4) on the road this year, tied for third most in MLS. The Caps' also have just one win in their last four away matches and three of their five losses have come on the road. SUPER SABBI: Since arriving in February via transfer from French side Le Havre AC, forward Emmanuel Sabbi has scored six goals across all competitions, second most on the team. He also has added four assists. He has four goals in his last seven games, including three game winners. UP NEXT: The Whitecaps are back in action Wednesday, travelling to Hamilton to face Canadian Premier League side Forge FC in the semifinal of the Telus Canadian Championship. The second game of the series will be played Sept. 16 in Vancouver. The Whitecaps are looking to win their fourth straight Canadian title. The Women's World Cup marks the streaming service's first foray into live soccer. Netflix's U.S. rights deal was announced in December. 'We will embrace the opportunity to work with Netflix to continue to grow the popularity of the women's game in Canada — a nation with a rich FIFA Women's World Cup history,' FIFA chief business officer Romy Gai said in a statement. The 2027 World Cup will be hosted in Brazil from June 24 to July 25, featuring 32 teams competing across eight cities. The host country for the 2031 tournament, expanded to 48 from 32 teams, is expected to be revealed at the 76th FIFA Congress on April 30, 2026, in Vancouver. 'We are thrilled that Netflix will be FIFA's exclusive partner in Canada for the Women's World Cup in 2027 and 2031,' said Gabe Spitzer, Netflix's vice-president of sports. 'With under two years to go until the first match in Brazil, we are hard at work on planning and aim to give fans unparalleled access to the most prestigious competition in women's football.' The U.S. Soccer Federation has confirmed its interest in submitting a joint 2031 hosting bid with other CONCACAF member associations. FIFA calls the Women's World Cup the biggest women's sporting event in the world, saying the 2023 tournament, hosted by Australia and New Zealand, attracted close to two million fans to the stadiums and drew more than two billion views across television, streaming and social media platforms. FIFA announced in early June that for the first time, it was selling the rights to the 2027 and '31 women's tournaments 'on a stand-alone basis in Canada,' as opposed to bundled with other FIFA events. The deadline for bid submissions was July 10. TSN and CTV combined to broadcast all 64 matches at the 2023 tournament. Toronto Blue Jays Tennis Editorials Ontario Columnists

Akshay Bhatia shoots career-best 62 to lead in Memphis. Scottie Scheffler is 5 back

Akshay Bhatia hits out of the bunker on the second hole during the first round of the St. Jude Championship golf tournament Thursday, Aug. 7, 2025, in Memphis, Tenn. (AP Photo/George Walker IV) MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Akshay Bhatia had a blazing finish to get his PGA Tour postseason off to a good start, closing eagle-birdie-birdie for an 8-under 62 to post his career low and take a one-shot lead over Tommy Fleetwood in the FedEx St. Jude Championship. Scottie Scheffler, playing for the first time since winning the British Open for his second major of the year, made bogey on the final hole for a 67, his 10th straight round in the 60s. Bhatia comes into the FedEx Cup playoffs at No. 45, with only the top 50 advancing to the second of three tournaments in the lucrative postseason. The idea is to be among the top 30 who reach East Lake for a shot at the $10 million bonus. He was paired with Harry Hall of England, who is at No. 44. Hall was matching Bhatia until the final two holes, when Bhatia rolled in a 25-foot birdie putt on the 17th and stuffed a short iron into 2 feet on 18. Bhatia said he has been spending too much time thinking about numbers, whether it's his score or his world ranking or his position in the FedEx Cup. The goal is to keep his mind peaceful. 'I felt pretty relaxed, and I'm just not trying to force anything,' he said. 'It's OK to get mad at golf shots but not at yourself.' Justin Rose and Bud Cauley, who is at No. 53, also were at 64 on a TPC Southwind that has 18 new greens and a course with much thicker rough. Fleetwood is all but set for the FedEx Cup finale at No. 9, though he would love to get that first PGA Tour title to go along with European tour wins against strong fields. He hit 13 out of 14 fairway, and the one he missed led to a birdie when he holed a bunker shot on No. 9. 'People talk about this golf course as a second-shot golf course, but it's only a second-shot golf course if you're in the fairway,' Fleetwood said. 'I hit the ball so well off the tee that I was always giving myself an opportunity.' And then it helped to see the putts drop, four straight birdies to close out his round. Fleetwood has the right outlook for this postseason series. Asked if he looked at the three weeks as one big event or each tournament on its own, Fleetwood said, 'It really day to day.' Projections can fluctuate with shots from anyone on any part of the course. Rickie Fowler, who missed the top 70 who qualify for the postseason last year, came in at No. 64 and shot 66, which projects him inside the top 50. Jordan Spieth was at No. 48. He had to rally on the back nine for a 69 that put him out of the top 50, and then back to No. 50 by the end of the day. Scheffler is assured the No. 1 seed for at least another week. He looked plenty sharp, giving himself a lot of looks at birdie and converting four of them. He missed out on a good birdie chance at the par-5 16th when he drove into the rough and sent the next shot into a bunker about 100 yards short of the green. He also took three putts from 70 feet on the final hole. 'Today was a good day. I did some solid stuff,' Scheffler said. 'Felt like I was close to playing a really great round but ended up with a solid round. Overall a decent start.' Nick Taylor of Abbotsford, B.C., shot 67, Taylor Pendrith of Richmond Hill, Ont., had a 69, while Corey Conners of Listowel, Ont., and Mackenzie Hughes of Dundas, Ont., each had a 71. This is one of the more important weeks of the PGA Tour because of what's at stake. Not only do the top 50 advance to the BMW Championship, they are assured of being in all the $20 million signature event for next year. Among those on the bubble, Si Woo Kim (No. 46) opened with a 65 and former U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark had a 67. 'It's kind of like dicey spot right now,' Kim said. 'And started struggling, so I was like, 'I don't know if I can get through to next week.' But tried to keep it as simple as possible, and that helps me a lot. I had a great round, so hopefully I've got more room the next couple days. Just trying to make it simple and not much think about next week.' Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley, who might be the first playing captain since 1963, opened with a 72. Bradley is No. 10 in the Ryder Cup standings. He played with Maverick McNealy, who is 11th in the standings. McNealy shot 66. ___ AP golf: The Associated Press
