‘Waiting for papa to celebrate Raksha Bandhan when we got the call': Family of staffer injured in East Delhi hospital fire

On Saturday, Manan Sharma (18) and his two sisters were celebrating Raksha Bandhan at their home in Dilshad Colony, eagerly awaiting their father's return after his shift ended at 7 pm. Their father, Naresh Sharma (56), worked at Kosmos Superspeciality Hospital in East Delhi's Anand Vihar. At 5.40 pm, Manan received a call that shocked him. 'It was from Pushpanjali Hospital… they told me my father was admitted there after a fire broke out at Kosmos Hospital,' said Manan, a hotel management student. It was then that the family found out about the blaze. Around 11 am, the four-storey hospital was engulfed in fire and smoke — killing one person. Ten others were rescued, including eight patients and two staff members. According to fire officials, a call regarding the blaze was received at 12.12 pm, following which seven fire tenders were rushed to the location. By 3 pm, the fire was brought under control. Police said the fire broke out in a server room on the ground floor of the hospital. 'Eight patients and three hospital staffers — Amit (housekeeping staff), Har Devi and Naresh (dialysis room staffers) — were rescued and shifted to Pushpanjali Hospital nearby,' said DCP (Shahdara) Prashant Priya Gautam. Police said Amit was declared dead at the hospital. 'It appears he initially rushed to the roof, but later locked himself in the bathroom on the third floor to escape the blaze. His body is being shifted to the mortuary for an autopsy,' said the DCP. Amit's friend, Vishal Agnihotri, who worked with him until about two and a half months ago, described him as a dedicated family man with two children. 'He was good at his work,' Vishal said. 'He had been working at the hospital for several years.' Outside the hospital, which is located in a residential area on Bhartendu Harish Chandra Marg, shards of glass from broken window panels were scattered around. It is flanked by a bank and a hotel on one side, and an under-construction building on the other. Staff members said it was built around 2012–2013 and primarily specialised in orthopaedic surgeries, while also admitting patients with ailments such as fever, dengue, and road accident victims. The hospital was evacuated following the blaze. According to a staff member, most employees were not at work due to the festival. 'Around eight patients have been admitted to Pushpanjali, along with two staff members who are in the ICU,' said the staff member. Families, meanwhile, demanded clarity. Shekhar (21), a daily wage worker admitted to Kosmos Hospital with a fever, was shifted to Pushpanjali Hospital's general ward after the fire. His cousins, Sanju and Prince, said he was admitted four days ago but now suffers from severe stomach pain. 'Doctors haven't said anything yet. The fire was very disturbing. We just want Shekhar to recover soon,' Prince said. They were with relatives for Raksha Bandhan when they got a call about the incident at 1 pm. Sanju voiced concerns over hospital safety: 'Hospitals are supposed to be safe places. If hospitals aren't safe, where will we go?' Naresh, meanwhile, is in the ICU, battling severe asphyxiation. He had been working at the hospital since its inception. Manan's uncle, who accompanied him, said a doctor at Kosmos informed them that all medical expenses would be covered by the hospital. Police said a case under sections 287 (negligent conduct with respect to fire or combustible matter) and 106(1) (causing death by negligence) of the BNS has been registered against unknown persons. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. 'A detailed investigation has been initiated to ascertain lapses, if any, in fire safety compliance at the hospital,' a senior police officer said.

Road Transport Act needs review to curb road tax dodgers

KUALA LUMPUR: The Road Transport Act (APJ) 1987 needs to be reviewed to impose harsher penalties on owners of luxury vehicles who drive without valid road tax and insurance. According to the Road Safety Expert Association (PPKJR), the current minimum fine of RM300 is not a strong enough deterrent and has failed to curb the offence. Jamil Manan Supri, the founder and road safety and motorsports advisor for PPKJR, said tougher penalties would make owners of such vehicles fear breaking the law. He added that the practice of some luxury vehicle owners who are willing to pay the RM300 compound to continue driving without valid road tax and insurance must be stopped completely. He said that while enforcement agencies face constraints because they have to focus on more pressing issues such as commercial vehicle collisions and seatbelt compliance, this issue should also be prioritised as it involves the safety of other road users. "The Road Transport Department (JPJ) needs to take proactive steps to detect and issue firm warnings to owners of luxury vehicles who violate the rules," Manan said. "Stern action must be taken so that drivers do not take road tax and insurance lightly, especially for high-powered luxury vehicles." Earlier, Berita Harian reported that the low fines for driving without road tax and insurance are allegedly the reason some owners of high-powered luxury vehicles do not renew these documents. This reality was revealed by senior lawyer Muhammad Hasif Hasan, who shared his experience of meeting a product founder with a luxury vehicle who was willing to appear in court to settle a summons for driving without road tax and insurance. Manan said the issue of luxury vehicle owners failing to pay road tax and insurance is not new. He added that the issue should not be taken lightly by vehicle owners because it will have a major impact on accident victims who cannot make insurance claims.

Wish we had a policy to confiscate and scrap the rowdy vehicle and give the scrap money as compensation to the victim. This was a perfect case." Can Scent Really Boost Your Energy? Here's What Experts Say

Scent isn't just fragrance—it's a powerful tool to shift your mood, boost energy, and align with your inner state. There's a reason why the smell of freshly brewed coffee perks you up before the first sip or why a whiff of lavender before bed can help lull you into rest. Scent, though often underestimated, is a profound energy tool—one that taps directly into your emotional and neurological wiring. 'Scent is more than just a pleasant aroma," says Sachi Parekh, founder, Meyander, a brand rooted in mindful olfactory rituals. 'It's an expression of your inner world. While your personal likes and dislikes form the foundation, scent can also act as an emotional compass, helping you ground, balance, and better understand yourself." Indeed, science backs this up. Scent molecules travel through the olfactory nerve to the brain's limbic system—the seat of emotion, memory, and motivation. This is where scent's real power lies: not just in how it makes us feel, but how it shifts how we feel. According to Sachi, being intentional about scent—choosing fragrances that align with your inner state—can amplify your personal energy and create a kind of sensory resonance with the world around you. 'Whether it's the earthy calm of sandalwood or the bright zest of citrus, scent becomes an extension of how you feel and what you want to radiate." For Manan Gandhi, founder, ZERO ZERO, a brand specialising in 100% natural essential oils, the power of scent lies in both tradition and biology. 'Certain aromas stimulate your nervous system, wake up your senses, and even trigger the release of feel-good chemicals like dopamine or adrenaline, pulling the body out of a sluggish or fatigued state," he explains. Manan points to specific energising notes: 'Citrus scents—like lemon, grapefruit, and orange—are bright, sharp, and refreshing. They help increase alertness and uplift mood. Peppermint is powerful for mental clarity and physical vitality; it actually increases oxygen to the brain. Eucalyptus clears your mind, opens your airways, and refreshes the body, while rosemary stimulates memory and concentration, making you feel sharper and more awake." The best part? You don't need to overhaul your routine to harness these benefits. These oils can be used in diffusers to uplift your space, blended into skincare, or applied topically (with care) as a personal scent ritual. Manan suggests mixing essential oils depending on your desired effect—calm, clarity, or energy—and letting scent do its subtle work. In a world where energy management is as essential as time management, scent becomes a deeply intuitive tool—part self-care, part self-expression. As Sachi aptly puts it, 'The more intentional you are with scent, the more it becomes a subtle yet powerful way to express your aura and elevate your presence."
