Attempted murder: SUV driver remanded in 6-day police custody
JAMMU: A local court in Jammu on Wednesday remanded in police custody an SUV driver — accused in an attempted murder case — for six days. This came three days after a rashly driven SUV hit a 68-year-old scooter driver in Jammu's Gandhinagar on July 27, reversed and rammed the scooterist again in an apparent deliberate act captured on CCTVs, landing the seriously injured victim in ICU and triggering a manhunt for the culprit amid outrage and viral videos. The accused, Manan Anand, was arrested Wednesday and produced in court, which remanded him in police custody. He has been booked under BNS Sections 281 (rash driving), 109 (attempt to murder) and 125(a) (endangering human life). The court directed police to produce Anand before a competent court before the expiry of the remand period, and instructed that he be medically examined every 24 hours. On Thursday, the family of the injured, Kamal Dutta, moved him from GMC Jammu to Fortis Hospital in Punjab for specialised treatment, after his condition began deteriorating. The vehicle was impounded, and Jammu RTO cancelled its registration.

Three days after a Thar driver knocked down an elderly man in a hit-and-run case in Jammu, the daughter of the victim spoke to CNN-News18, claiming the accused also abused her father. For the unversed, a man, identified as Manan Anand, alleged hit an elderly man deliberately from his Mahindra Thar after the latter's scooty collided with the his SUV in Jammu on Sunday afternoon. He has been booked. The woman, Priyanka Dutta, claimed that his father has been shifted to Chandigarh and he is critical. She told the father of the accused has been detained by the police and the accused youth is absconding. 'My first priority is that my father gets well soon. I want to know why the accuse did this. Culprit is on the run…police is doing its work. My father has been shifted to Chandigarh…he is critical." she told CNN-News18. A video capturing the hit-and-run incident has also emerged which shows the accused driving his car rashly from Gandhi Nagar towards Greenbelt Park. The elderly man who was driving a scooty rammed into the vehicle near Allora Textiles at around 1.30 pm on Sunday, after which the Thar driver reversed his car and hit the victim deliberately again. The elderly man suffered grave injuries in the incident. In the video, Anand is seen coming out of his vehicle after hitting the man at will and saying something to him while the latter lay still on the road, injured. Anand is seen walking towards his car, sitting inside and driving off, leaving the elderly behind. Meanwhile, a case was registered at the Gandhi Nagar police station under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for rash driving (section 281), attempt to murder (section 109), and putting people's lives in danger (section 125a). Cops have also taken the vehicle into their custody.
