Cavalry fall to Vancouver in penalties in Canadian Championship quarters
The chase for the 2025 Canadian Championship is over for Cavalry FC. A loss in a penalty shootout to visiting Vancouver FC on Tuesday night at ATCO Field left the Calgary club heartbroken and ended this year's run for the Voyageurs Cup. 'I think obviously we're disappointed,' said Cavalry midfield star Shamit Shome after the 1-1 result, decided by penalty kicks that favoured the Vancouver squad 5-4 at Spruce Meadows. 'We wanted to push together to get to the semifinals for the first time in a while.' A win, indeed, would've pushed Cavalry onto the penultimate round of 'The Battle of the North' — a place the club reached once before back in the inaugural season. Six years later and with both a league and playoff championship under their belts, the Cavs seem primed to make it back to at least the semi round. Instead after Tuesday's decision, it's Vancouver FC off to play either Canadian Premier League rival Valour FC or Major League Soccer's Vancouver Whitecaps FC. That tie is at 2-2 with Leg 2 in the total-goal series set for Wednesday night at Vancouver's BC Place. The penalty shootout saw Tobias Warschewski miss for Cavalry before teammates Caniggia Elva, Mihail Gherasimencov, Fraser Aird, Ali Musse all scored. Then it was Maël Henry saved by the Vancouver goalie Callum Irving. For Vancouver, it was Nicolás Mazquida, David Norman Jr., Aidan O'Connor, Terran Campbell and Juan Batista converting penalty kicks on Cavalry goalie Marco Carducci. Teammate Thomas Powell missed his chance. The visitors got on the board first when Mazquida converted a penalty kick in the 23rd minute. Levi Laing was charged with taken down a Vancouver FC forward in the box, leading to the shot from the dot that Mazquida hammered past Carducci. After that goal, 'They defended their socks off,' said Cavalry gaffer Tommy Wheeldon Jr. The home side, however, did get the goal back in the 66th minute on a weird play. Cavalry defender Mihail Gherasimencov chased down a corner kick that was redirected beyond the top of the box and fired a ball that deflected into the net off injured — and prone — O'Connor. But it wasn't their win in the end. 'We can't make excuses,' added Wheeldon. 'All that matters is the result. Congratulations to Vancouver and best of luck to them in the next round.' tsaelhof@

Atletico make themselves at home again at ATCO Field, defeating Cavalry FC 2-0
Atletico Ottawa continued a hot streak at ATCO Field Saturday, defeating Cavalry FC 2-0 at Spruce Meadows. It was the club's fifth straight win and sixth in their last nine appearances on Calgary's home field -- the most victories by any Canadian Premier League team apart from the Cavalry themselves. Kevin Dos Santos broke in and fired one under the hand of Marco Carducci a little over eight minutes into the game, giving Atletico a 1-0 lead. 'They made the saves and blocks and things like that they needed to do, and they were flawless in that. That's the tale of the game, really.' Cavalry FC are now off until July 8, when they play a Canadian Championship match against Vancouver FC, so they have a chance to regroup after having a 10 game undefeated streak snapped Saturday. 'Refresh, reset, reload,' Wheeldon Jr. said. 'That's what we've got to look at. I said to the lads, we put a game plan together. A couple of things didn't go our way in a 90-plus minute game. So what we've got to do is just draw a line in the sand, move on, reload, and now we'll go again.'

Cavalry FC's Marco Carducci aids testicular cancer cause with meatball pizza partnership

Article content Then there's the veteran goalkeeper's other gig — that is saving balls for Calgary's male population, as a voice and high-profile face for Oneball, a local charity focused on supporting the battle against testicular cancer through funding, research and awareness. Article content One begets the other in his mission to be a proud Calgarian. Article content Article content 'After my testicular cancer diagnosis a few years ago, I have been working with Oneball,' Carducci said. 'I've partnered up with the Italian Centre Shop — great friends of ours there — and we've put together what's called Marco's Meatball Pizza. Article content Article content 'You can find the pun in that. I'll leave it as it is.' Article content But supporters can take it and bake it at home or enjoy the tasty pizza at the store's cafe in Willow Park, at 9919 Fairmount Dr. S.E. in Calgary. Article content Marco's Meatball Pizza is on sale for $17 for a limited time from April 23-30, with proceeds from each wheel sold going to Oneball. Article content 'Yeah … our first games obviously didn't go the way we wanted,' continued Carducci. 'But we've been here before, and we're excited again to play in front of our fans.' Article content To quote Cavalry's GM/head coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr., 'It's a marathon — not a sprint.' 'I think that's a big piece, right? We obviously lost some key pieces in Daan (Klomp) and Charlie (Trafford), but we've been able to keep a big core group of guys, right? And then we added some really good pieces, as well.
