'After my testicular cancer diagnosis a few years ago, I have been working with Oneball,' Carducci said. 'I've partnered up with the Italian Centre Shop — great friends of ours there — and we've put together what's called Marco's Meatball Pizza.

'You can find the pun in that. I'll leave it as it is.'

But supporters can take it and bake it at home or enjoy the tasty pizza at the store's cafe in Willow Park, at 9919 Fairmount Dr. S.E. in Calgary.

Marco's Meatball Pizza is on sale for $17 for a limited time from April 23-30, with proceeds from each wheel sold going to Oneball.
The goalie himself can't eat too many of the delicious works named after him, because that might interfere with his on-field professional job, which continues Saturday when Atlético Ottawa (2W-0L-1D) visits Carducci and Cavalry (0-1-1) for a Canadian Premier League match at ATCO Field (3 p.m., TSN3, OneSoccer.ca).

And it's a game the Cavs certainly want to win given their 0-fer-start to the CPL campaign.

'It's a long season — we know it is,' said Carducci, whose club dropped a 2-1 battle with arch-rival Forge FC in the season opener in Hamilton and then drew 1-1 last Friday night with Vancouver FC in the home opener at Spruce Meadows.

'Yeah … our first games obviously didn't go the way we wanted,' continued Carducci. 'But we've been here before, and we're excited again to play in front of our fans.'

They've been down this road before many times early in the CPL schedule.

So that's why there's no worries at this point — no panic at all — in still searching out a first league win on the season.

To quote Cavalry's GM/head coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr., 'It's a marathon — not a sprint.'

And being an original member of Cavalry, the superstar 'keeper and captain embraces that advice better than anyone else.

'I think it's a matter of we have that chemistry and we have an understanding of what this team is about and what makes this team tick — not just on the field but off it and culturally,' Carducci said. 'I think that's a big piece, right? We obviously lost some key pieces in Daan (Klomp) and Charlie (Trafford), but we've been able to keep a big core group of guys, right? And then we added some really good pieces, as well.

Calgary's Wild FC downs Halifax Tides 3-2 in Northern Super League
CALGARY – Calgary's Wild FC held off the Halifax Tides 3-2 on Thursday in the Northern Super League. Wild (3-2-2) scored three first-half goals before the winless Tides (0-5-1) countered with two late in the second. Calgary extended its undefeated run to four straight games with two wins and two draws in that span. Wild FC defeated the Tides 4-1 in Halifax on April 26 for Calgary's first NSL victory, and a week after the six-team NSL launched with the Vancouver Rise blanking Calgary 1-0. The Wild's Taegan Stewart scored her first career NSL goal when the 17-year-old Calgarian drilled a right-foot shot from the centre box home in first-half extra time. Jenaya Robertson of Delta, B.C., made it 2-0 for the hosts at McMahon Stadium with a left-footed strike in the 41st minute. Australian defender Ally Green got Calgary's first-half scoring burst underway in the 23rd minute. Wild goalkeeper Stephanie Bukovec's bid for a third clean sheet in four games was foiled when Haligonian Saorla Miller and Japanese striker Megumi Nakamura scored in the 72nd and 76th minutes respectively for the Tides. Valour FC gets out of basement in front of record-breaking crowd
Valour FC gave some students plenty to cheer about in their inaugural school day match. The Winnipeg club scored three times in a game for the first time all season as they defeated Vancouver FC 3-1 in front of a record-breaking crowd Wednesday morning at Princess Auto Stadium. The announced attendance was 11,390, which shattered their old record by almost two-thousand fans as 9,699 attended their first-ever match back in 2019. Valour fell behind one-nil in the 17th minute, but they scored late in the half and then added two more markers in the second half for just their second league victory of the season. 'Emotionally the guys were hyped and they felt the energy,' said Valour FC general manager and head coach Phillip Dos Santos. 'You go down one-zero and sometimes the balloon can deflate and they didn't. The win leapfrogs Valour FC past Vancouver and into a tie for sixth place in the Canadian Premier League standings after not getting the desired result in a nil-nil draw on Sunday. 'Huge,' said Twardek. 'For morale, it's massive. We obviously have a little bit of a gap between games now, so it gives you real positive emotions to sit on for, I don't know, 10 days or so. 'Naturally it was a really, really quick turnaround. We felt we should have beat Pacific. We felt that we were pressing for a goal, so when today started we went in hungry, ready to get chances, and to score goals today.' Both teams played the second half with only 10 men after Gianfranco Facchineri and Kunle Dada-Luke were issued red cards after an altercation that ended with a shoving match late in the opening half. Valour FC forward Shaan Hundal was stopped on a penalty kick in the 51st minute. Valour is now unbeaten in their last five straight matches on the home pitch. They now have two wins, five losses, and two draws in their first nine league matches of the season. Story continues below advertisement They now get a 10-day break with their next match Sunday, June 15 on the road against Atletico Ottawa.

‘The talent and the quality is there'
A lacklustre start to the year has Valour FC on pace to finish dead last in the Canadian Premier League for a third straight year. Through eight league matches, Winnipeg's professional soccer club is 1-5-2 for six points, but they do have an opportunity to climb out of the basement and into seventh place if they can pick up a win Wednesday morning against Vancouver FC (1-4-3) at Princess Auto Stadium. Despite the discouraging start, Valour defender Gianfranco Facchineri believes the group can turn things around. Daniel Crump / Free Press Files Winnipeg Valour midfielder Diogo Dias da Ressurreição (left) takes the ball from Wanderers midfielder Sean Rea. The Valour lost their home-opener in a heartbreaker in stoppage time to Halifax in April. 'Confidence is high in the locker room right now. Now it's a matter of putting everything in our process together and stringing some results together,' said Facchineri on Tuesday. 'Every game is incredibly important, but (Wednesday) is a game against a team where we're very clearly in a playoff push with… It's one on the calendar you look at and (we) would love to walk away with three points… I think we've had to iron out some buffs and I think we've done that now.' 'I believe now is a time where this team will pick itself up and give our fans something to be proud of.' It would help tremendously if Valour could find the back of the net. They've only scored six times in CPL play, whereas first-place Atlético Ottawa (5-1-3) has 24 goals in nine matches. Valour's last outing was a scoreless draw against visiting Pacific FC on Sunday. Forward Shaan Hundal and defender Kelsey Egwu lead the Winnipeg side with two goals apiece. 'We've had good chances and we've gotten to those last 30 yards. And sometimes you just have to make that right decision at the right time instead of taking those 30-yard shots,' said head coach and general manager Phillip Dos Santos. 'I think the talent and the quality is there. We just have to find a way and make sure it happens sooner than later.' Valour has shown flashes that they can play at a high level. There's no better example than May 20 when they earned a 2-2 draw against the Vancouver Whitecaps of the MLS in the Canadian Championship quarterfinal at home in what was arguably the club's most impressive result in their seven-year history. Valour will meet the Whitecaps again in the second leg at BC Place on July 9. The top five teams at the end of the 28-game season will qualify for the CPL playoffs. Valour is still on the hunt for its first post-season berth. 'We know that the margins are very slim in this league,' said Dos Santos. 'Apart from Pacific, we still play everyone three times so things could change very fast and it's on us to make that happen.'
