Official: Porto appoint Farioli as new head coach

Porto have officially confirmed that Italian tactician Francesco Farioli has been appointed the club's new head coach for the start of the 2025-26 season. 'Francesco Farioli is the new coach of FC Porto,' a statement on the club website read. Advertisement 'The new head of FC Porto was born 36 years ago in a small town in Tuscany and has a different path in life than the usual. As a football fanatic and former amateur, he never abandoned his academic life and graduated with a Philosophy degree at the University of Florence.' Farioli joins Porto after a one-year spell in the Netherlands with Ajax, where he and the team had started life promisingly, but lost control of a nine-point lead at the top of the table with five games to go in 2024-25, and ultimately finished in second place behind PSV Eindhoven. Having left Ajax by mutual consent in May, citing a 'difference in principles', Farioli has now put pen to paper on an initial two-year contract in Portugal, which will run until the summer of 2027. Official: Farioli appointed head coach of FC Porto. Porto will be the fifth club on Farioli's CV following previous spells in Turkey with Fatih Kamagumruk and Alanyaspor, plus OGC Nice in France and the aforementioned Ajax. The 36-year-old replaces Martin Anselmi, who was originally appointed in January and oversaw a third-place league finish, but was let go after a disappointing return at the FIFA Club World Cup.

Francesco Farioli appointed Porto head coach

Francesco Farioli has been appointed FC Porto head coach on a two-year contract. The 36-year-old has joined the Portuguese club less than two months after leaving Ajax, whom he coached for one season. The Italian, who guided Ajax to a second-place finish and missed out on the Eredivisie title to PSV Eindhoven on the final day of the campaign, was the first non-Dutch coach at the Amsterdam club since Danish manager Morten Olsen left in 1998. Farioli replaces Martin Anselmi at Porto; the Argentinian won just 10 of his 21 matches in charge, overseeing a third-place finish in Portugal's Primeira Liga and a group stage exit at this summer's Club World Cup. Farioli started his coaching career in Turkey and enjoyed a successful 2023-24 season in charge of French club Nice, where he helped guide the side to fifth in Ligue 1. At Nice and Ajax, he primarily deployed a 4-3-3 formation, in which his side generally pressed high in a man-to-man system, with similarities to Marseille head coach Roberto De Zerbi's style of play. Porto appoint Farioli as head coach

Former Ajax Amsterdam and Nice manager Francesco Farioli has been appointed head coach of Porto on a two-year contract, the Portuguese side said on Sunday. Farioli left Ajax in May after the Dutch side missed out on a record 37th Eredivisie crown following a late season collapse, which allowed PSV Eindhoven to snatch the title on the final day. The Italian led Nice to a fifth-place finish in Ligue 1 in the 2023-24 season and has also coached Turkish sides Fatih Karagumruk and Alanyaspor. He replaces Martin Anselmi, who departed Porto earlier this month after their group-stage exit from the Club World Cup.
