'It hurts' - County boss Paterson on slow start

Notts County boss Martin Paterson says he is hurting following his side's stoppage-time defeat at Barrow on Shipley's goal seven minutes into additional time gave Barrow their first win of the season and left County with just one point from a possible nine in their opening three League Two fixtures."It does hurt," Paterson told BBC Radio Nottingham following the match."There's many different reasons in terms of you talk about hurting. "It might be easy if you just focus on the last minute. What hurts the most is, again, we start the first half and we don't look ourselves at all."[Giving away] simple passes, not things we have worked on, and that's where my honesty probably opens me up for criticism."The first [Barrow] goal is a high press moment and we're so passive. We don't work on that. "We seem to be really easy to score against in those quick moments. We have to do so much to score our goal. The first-half performance is not good enough." 'We're in a little sticky spell' Despite County's slow start to the season, Paterson is confident he can turn the Magpies' fortunes around."I'm not worried. What I quickly need to do is dig it out and rid of it," he added."It takes a long time for us to get up the field, I'm aware of that."In the second half, we had a response from the first-half performance but I am sick of saying that as well, if I'm honest."Second half we dominated the ball, we pass the ball properly and forward and start to run in behind and we start to look like us again."We're in a little sticky spell and there's no hiding that. "It's almost like 50% of the time we're bad and 50% we're good. But in the bad, we don't stay inside the game and dig it out and in the good we don't punish enough. I accept full responsibility for that."

Paterson aims to 'change culture' of Notts County

Despite having 58 per cent of possession against Salford, County had fewer shots on target and shots in total than their an aim to turnaround the slow start, Paterson suggested he will be naming a full-strength side for County's League Cup first-round tie at Wigan Athletic on Tuesday."I always think, if I'm a supporter, how I'm feeling after the game. If I'm being honest, I would be really, really frustrated," he said."I have to be accountable for that, I'm head coach, it's on me. On Saturday, August 2 featured Newport County and Notts County in two football games. Originally set for 3 p.m. at Newport, Wales's Rodney Parade, the game was planned to begin. Before kick-off, though, a supporter in the stands abruptly became quite sick. Assistance required two air ambulances to land directly on the ground. This emergency cleared the whole stadium and the game got under an hour later at 4 p.m. Each of the teams had this one as their first game of the fresh 2024–2025 season. Following the incident, fans were both surprised and worried for the afflicted individual. Newport County vs Notts County delayed after fan falls ill on pitch The incident happened less than an hour before the League Two match was set to begin at Rodney Parade in Newport. Both Newport County and Notts County players were already at the ground when the emergency took place. Medical teams rushed to help after a fan in the stands became seriously ill. Two air ambulances landed directly on the pitch, stopping all preparations for the game. As a safety step, everyone inside the stadium, including fans and media, was asked to leave the stands. Newport County confirmed the news on X (formerly Twitter). The club wrote: 'Due to a supporter being taken ill in the stands, an air ambulance has landed on the pitch. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Citadel by Mahindra – Homes with a Modern Edge Mahindra Citadel Enquire Now Undo A delay to kick-off is likely, with more details to follow as soon as possible.' Everyone at Newport County sends their best wishes to the individual concerned. We'd also like to thank all of the supporters for their patience.' Notts County also shared their thoughts: 'We await a further update on the condition of the supporter, who remains in our thoughts.' David Hughes and Martin Paterson manage first League Two games amid delay For both teams, this game was notable as it was the first League Two match for their new coaches. In a competitive game, David Hughes took charge of Newport County for the first occasion. Having been named in May, Martin Paterson, ex-Burton chief and aide to Phil Neville at Inter Miami, took over Notts County for first time since his June appointment. Finishing 22nd last year, Newport County narrowly escaped relegation; Notts County finished fifth but lost in the play-offs. Both teams are aiming for better results this year. The condition of the sick fan is still to be updated. For real-time updates, scores, and highlights, follow our live coverage of the India vs England Test match here. 'We want promotion' - Paterson 'not hiding' from Notts goal

Notts County head coach Martin Paterson says his side are not shying away from expectations as one of the favourites for promotion to League One. Paterson joined the club from Burton Albion in June following County's defeat by AFC Wimbledon in the League Two play-off semi-final at the end of last season. "When I joined the football club I said I am not going to hide from it. Promotion is something the supporters and owners want and we want it too," Paterson said."I wonder how many clubs are sitting there with the same objective this year."There's going to be a lot of them. It's a tough division this year so we have to make sure we are ready and do what we say." The Magpies travelled to Germany as part of their pre-season preparations with Paterson admitting there is work to do on their attacking game. "I got the training and physical side out of Germany. In terms of results and attacking moments probably not, but that comes with the honesty of how we are going to work," Paterson said."We always work to get more goals on the attack. I am confident with where we are defensively and our organisation but yes, our focus is now on working with the ball and finishing attacks," he added. Notts travel to face Newport County on Saturday, 2 August for their League Two opener.
