Nia DaCosta reflects on directing The Marvels and the moment it turned into a "learning curve": "Okay, this isn't going to be the movie that I pitched"

The Marvels director Nia DaCosta has reflected on her time on the cosmic MCU entry, as well as speaking for the first time about how the Captain Marvel sequel deviated from her original idea. "They had a date, and they were prepping certain things, and you just have to lean into the process hardcore," DaCosta said at the Storyhouse festival (via Deadline) of the production of the Marvel Phase 5 entry that brought Brie Larson's hero into the orbit of Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani) and Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris). DaCosta added, "The way they make those films is very different to the way, ideally, I would make a film, so you just have to lean into the process and hope for the best. The best didn't happen this time but you kind of have to trust in the machine." That machine – the Marvel Studios behemoth, headed up by Kevin Feige and a band of seasoned producers and behind-the-scenes talent – seemingly led to DaCosta's initial concept being scrapped – as far into the process as the editing booth. "It was interesting because there was a certain point when I was like, 'Ok, this isn't going to be the movie that I pitched or even the first version of the movie that I shot' so I realised that this is now an experience and it's learning curve and it really makes you stronger as a filmmaker in terms of your ability to navigate," DaCosta said. The Marvels ended up as one of the MCU's big post-Avengers: Endgame disappointments both critically and commercially. It currently sits on 62% on Rotten Tomatoes and grossed only $206 million at the box office, a significant loss from its reported $300 million-plus budget. DaCosta's career, though, hasn't stalled after her Marvel outing failed to soar. She's set to direct Tessa Thompson in the upcoming film Hedda, while DaCosta will also helm 28 Years Later sequel The Bone Temple. Thunderbolts director says the new Marvel movie is inspired by Toy Story 3: "Can they get out of the trash can together?"
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Director Jake Schreier says Thunderbolts* is inspired by Toy Story 3 - and that the upcoming Marvel film follows a similar concept. "I had Toy Story 3 in there. It wasn't as focused on a genre as much as dynamics amongst characters," Schreier told Empire. "They all have that dynamic of a team that is thrown together. That [furnace] sequence works so well because you've come to care about these characters so much. Can they get out of the trash can together?' The film sees a group of unlikely heroes band together to save the world (a world without the Avengers, mind you) after being assembled by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus). The group in question includes Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, Hannah John-Kamen as Ava Starr aka Ghost, Wyatt Russell as John Walker, David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov aka Red Guardian, Olga Kurylenko as Antonia Dreykov aka Taskmaster, and Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova. Additionally, Harrison Ford appears as General Thaddeus 'Thunderbolt' Ross, Geraldine Viswanathan as the Contessa's assistant Mel, with Lewis Pullman as the mysterious supervillain Sentry. Thunderbolts* is the final movie in Marvel Phase 5, with The Fantastic Four: First Steps kicking off Marvel Phase 6. Thunderbolts* is set to hit theaters on May 5, 2025, delayed from its previous December 20, 2024 release date due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. 'Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man': How to Watch Marvel's All-New Animated Show
Marvel's most iconic web-slinging superhero is set for a whole new alternate take on his back story, with the release this week of new animated show, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. Helmed by Craig of the Creek showrunner Jeff Trammell, the new series asks how Spidey would have turned out if he'd been mentored by industrialist villain Norman Osborn, rather than Tony Stark. Hudson Thames reprises his What If...? role as the voice of Peter Parker, while the show also boasts the vocal talents of Hugh Dancy as Otto Octavius, Vincent D'Onofrio as Wilson Fisk and Sing Sing star Colman Domingo as Osborn. Old school Spidey fans will likely appreciate the retro-tinged 3D cel-shading style, which pays homage to the artwork of early Spider-Man comic books by Steve Ditko and John Romita. Daredevil fans will be pleased to hear the character's radar sense is set to be called up on in the show, with Charlie Cox providing his voice. We've got the release date and time for the series below so you can plan your viewing accordingly.
