Thunderbolts director says the new Marvel movie is inspired by Toy Story 3: "Can they get out of the trash can together?"
Director Jake Schreier says Thunderbolts* is inspired by Toy Story 3 - and that the upcoming Marvel film follows a similar concept.
"I had Toy Story 3 in there. It wasn't as focused on a genre as much as dynamics amongst characters," Schreier told Empire. "They all have that dynamic of a team that is thrown together. That [furnace] sequence works so well because you've come to care about these characters so much. Can they get out of the trash can together?'
The film sees a group of unlikely heroes band together to save the world (a world without the Avengers, mind you) after being assembled by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus). The group in question includes Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, Hannah John-Kamen as Ava Starr aka Ghost, Wyatt Russell as John Walker, David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov aka Red Guardian, Olga Kurylenko as Antonia Dreykov aka Taskmaster, and Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova. Additionally, Harrison Ford appears as General Thaddeus 'Thunderbolt' Ross, Geraldine Viswanathan as the Contessa's assistant Mel, with Lewis Pullman as the mysterious supervillain Sentry.
Thunderbolts* is the final movie in Marvel Phase 5, with The Fantastic Four: First Steps kicking off Marvel Phase 6.
Thunderbolts* is set to hit theaters on May 5, 2025, delayed from its previous December 20, 2024 release date due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. For more, check out our guide to the story so far in Marvel Phase 5 and a look ahead at what's still to come in Marvel Phase 6.

'How lucky I was to share in a little of Ozzy's magic?' Producer Andrew Watt pays tribute to his friend
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. It's been just three weeks since Ozzy Osbourne's sudden passing and his friends and colleagues are still coming to terms with their loss. The latest to make a public statement is Andrew Watt. The esteemed producer, who worked on Ozzy's final pair of solo albums – 2020's Ordinary Man and Patient Number 9 from 2022 - has shared his thoughts about the man via a post on Instagram. 'Still processing saying goodbye to @ozzyosbourne,' he wrote, alongside a number of personal videos and photos of his friend. 'Someone said 'Grief is the price of Love.' I say that to myself everyday but at the end of the day I just miss my friend so much. There is a new hole in my heart, something I will learn to live with… The music is obvious… how lucky I was to share in a little of Ozzy's magic, but the friendship was the greatest gift of all… I will miss laughing with you forever Boss… Do you want a kick in the balls?' Ordinary Man was Watt's first full production credit on an album, after which he went on to on work with some of music's biggest names, including the Rolling Stones, Iggy Pop and Paul McCartney. He clearly made a lasting connection with the Black Sabbath singer. 'Ozzy and I have a connection that's unlike anything else I've ever experienced,' he told Guitar World just a couple of months ago. 'We made some music together that we really love, and we'll continue making music together forever. More importantly than that, we talk every day and we're really close friends.' And yes, Watt also made an appearance at the Back To The Beginning gig at Villa Park back in early July, just like pretty much everyone who is anyone in the rock/metal world. Jussie Smollett Denies Alleged 2019 Hate Crime Was Hoax
Back in 2019, Jussie Smollett — who you probably know best from his performance on Empire — was indicted on 16 felony counts by a Chicago grand jury for allegedly filing a false police report regarding a hate crime that he claimed to be the victim of. When filing the report, Jussie alleged that two men shouted racial and homophobic slurs at him while putting a noose over his neck and pouring bleach on him. In 2021, he was found guilty of falsely reporting a hate crime, but in 2024 the conviction was overturned by the Illinois Supreme Court. In a new interview with Variety that was published ahead of the forthcoming Netflix documentary The Truth About Jussie Smollett?, the actor maintained his innocence and claimed that he was a victim of the hate crime that he was eventually charged for allegedly making a false report of. 'The villains are the two people who assaulted me, the Chicago Police Department and, if I may be so brave, the mayor,' he said, referring to former Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel. Jussie also alleged that the 2014 murder of teenager Laquan McDonald by Chicago police officer Jason Van Dyke played a role in the scrutiny surrounding him. 'Could it be that they had just found out about the missing minutes and the missing tape from the murder of Laquan McDonald? he said. "Could it be that the mayor helped hide that?' 'We're living in a world where the higher-ups, their main mission, in order to do all of the underhanded things that they're doing, is to distract us with the shiny object," he added. Jussie went on to address the pair of brothers, Abimbola and Olabinjo Osundairo, who eventually alleged to authorities that they'd planned the hate crime hoax along with the actor. 'All I can say is, God bless you, and I hope it was worth it,' he said. 'Every single other person's story has changed multiple times. Mine has never. I have nothing to gain from this.' When asked why exonerating evidence supporting Jussie's claims hasn't yet emerged six years after the initial report, he replied, 'To be honest with you, I don't really know. I'm not an investigative reporter or a detective. I can't sit and tell you exactly, beat by beat, what happened." "I can only tell you what did not happen. And what did not happen is the story that's been out there for almost seven years, that somehow I would have even a reason to do something as egregious as this.' Webtoon Soars 97% as Disney Pact Brings Marvel, Star Wars Comics to Platform
(Bloomberg) -- Webtoon Entertainment Inc. surged 81% in its best day since going public last year after announcing a partnership with Walt Disney Co. that will bring iconic characters such as Marvel's Spider-Man and Luke Skywalker of to its platform. The deal will allow it to publish 100 reformatted comics from Disney brands to a dedicated section on Webtoon's English-language app, the company said in a statement on Tuesday after the market's close. The two will also produce original web comics together. 'Together, we're bringing this legendary storytelling to a new generation of mobile-native comic fans, while giving existing fans a new way to experience series and characters they love,' said Yongsoo Kim, chief strategy officer and head of global Webtoon. Disney marks the latest collaboration for Webtoon, a platform that allows creators and users to make and discover digital comics. The company also counts South Korean entertainment firm HYBE Co. Ltd. and DC Comics, which is owned by Warner Bros Discovery Inc., as content partners. But even with the stock's surge, the stock is still below the $21 price of its initial public offering last year, following a previous string of disappointing earnings reports. Morgan Stanley's Matthew Cost said the Disney partnership is an 'intriguing development.' 'We believe this will be an important audience building effort that could help accelerate user growth in English speaking markets,' Cost wrote in a note published on Wednesday. 'Our key question is whether that Disney audience will stay in Webtoon to consume and create platform-native content, or will they only consume the branded content they know?'
