Movie Tea: MCU Eyeing Familiar Director To Bring X-Men To MCU; John Boyega Wants To Return To Star Wars

Some things are sweeter the second time around. From the planned return of the X-Men in bigger and bolder fashion, to the return of a star as an act of redemption for him and his role – here are the latest deets on what Disney has cooking for us behind the scenes. 'Thunderbolts*' Director Jake Schreier Eyed For Upcoming MCU X-Men Movie It may have taken 20 long years, but if the arrival of Deadpool and Wolverine in the MCU says anything, it's that something big is coming to the cinematic franchise. As you may have known, the big mouse has acted like Thanos himself, gathering all the pieces of the Marvel IP like they were Infinity Stones for a massive power play. With every piece now in their appropriate place, we might soon see what Disney has in store for us. With the recent success of the 'Thunderbolts*,' many are ecstatic to see what the MCU has in store for future installments of the franchise. However, it seems that the President of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige, is thinking far ahead into the future, especially with the end of the Multiverse Saga close at hand. According to Deadline, Marvel executives are eyeing Jake Schreier, the director of 'Thunderbolts*', to kickstart the MCU's age of mutant-kind. Having perfectly executed the recent blockbuster film to commercial and critical success, Schreier has instantly shortlisted himself as the director who would bring the X-Men to the MCU. According to Deadline, it's believed that Schreier has met with Marvel about this potential future project, and if he were to agree, he'll be working with a script penned by Michael Lesslie (known for his work in 'Now You See Me: Now You Don't' and 'Dope Girls'). Schreier has gone on record to say that he is an absolute lover of all things X-Men, and the fact that his only showing in the MCU so far has been a roaring success easily makes him the best candidate to helm the film. With people still gushing over the recent 'Deadpool & Wolverine' as well as 'X-Men '97,' X-Men fever has never been higher, and we can expect it to only go up as more info gets dropped. John Boyega Says He's Open To Return To Star Wars We can all agree that the Star Wars sequel trilogy was quite a massive disaster for the franchise due to its messy direction and lack of a cohesive plan. However, we cannot fault the artists put put their hearts and souls into bringing their respective characters to life. None were more devoted to their roles, but were ultimately done dirty by the franchise, than lead stars Daisy Ridley and John Boyega. As you may recall, 'The Force Awakens' heavily hinted, if not outright spelt it out, that John Boyega's Finn was supposed to be a Jedi, right down to the promotional material. However, this never came to pass, as subsequent films pivoted towards tackling an entirely different plot altogether. But as time heals all wounds, the franchise is finally taking a swing at what comes after the sequel trilogy, with Ridley herself stepping up and returning to the scene. Not only that, but she also hinted that she'd love to see Boyega join alongside her. Following the recent Fan Expo Philadelphia, Boyega finally responded, confirming that he is open to return to the franchise and reprise his role as Finn. Not only that, but he has even hinted that he has spoken to Daisy about it. In the panel, he addressed the question of his returning and he said the following: 'C'mon, yeah, of course. That would be fun to do, but contractually I'm on three movies and then after that, we don't know what's happening until they, you know, give you a few calls and say 'You should come back' and all that kind of stuff. And because of the whole storm after Star Wars, I think Disney felt a little bit like, 'Does he still want to be a part of it?' I'm like, damn, like, I can like this franchise and still tell you that certain elements wasn't all the way there. It doesn't remove your love for the whole entire franchise. Not only that, but he also took the opportunity to get some good digs in at the executive helming the project, essentially saying he will be back if they are 'treating the character well' and if they are 'fulfilling the arc that was teased', as well as 'approaching it by having a plan of what they're gonna do throughout the whole series.' These words were incredibly pointed, as several Star Wars projects have been left in limbo and were never revisited again, something that Boyega is painfully aware of. This exact choice of words is perhaps him saying that he is interested in joining the upcoming trilogy currently being penned by Simon Kinberg. Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy referred to it as 'the new saga that moves us into the future'. Though it is unconfirmed that Ridley's Rey will be the main star of this upcoming trilogy, the likely answer is 'yes', as she is their most important cinematic asset in the recent Star Wars cinematic universe. Whether or not Boyega will be in it is anyone's guess, but we are damn sure he's all for it. Source: Empire, Screen Rant, Variety

Judge shields Rapid City international student from removal while lawsuit proceeds

Priya Saxena, right, poses for a photo with South Dakota Mines President Brian Tande after receiving her doctoral and master's degrees May 10, 2025, during a commencement ceremony in Summit Arena at Rapid City. (Seth Tupper/South Dakota Searchlight) A woman from India who recently earned master's and doctoral degrees from South Dakota Mines in Rapid City can't be removed from the U.S. as her lawsuit against the federal government proceeds, a judge has ruled. Priya Saxena sued U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem last month after Saxena learned that her visa had been revoked, and that Homeland Security had, in turn, terminated her record in the federal database that clears international students to study in the country. U.S. District Judge Karen Schreier ruled on Thursday that the terms of a temporary restraining order against Homeland Security that she'd applied in the case last month should extend out for the duration of the lawsuit's proceedings. International student recounts 'numb' feeling after receiving email about her potential deportation Saxena was among more than 1,000 students who'd had their student records scrubbed by Homeland Security in recent months. She's also one of many who'd earned court orders to reverse the record removal. Homeland Security opted to reinstate the student records last month, and had argued in South Dakota court documents that doing so made Saxena's lawsuit moot. Through her lawyer, Jim Leach of Rapid City, Saxena argued that it wasn't moot, as without court intervention the government could resume its attempts to deport her at any point. Saxena collected her degrees from Mines on Saturday. Days later in court, Saxena told Schreier that she'd hoped to stay in the U.S. and apply to work under the U.S. Customs and Immigration Service's Optional Practical Training (OPT) program, which allows international students to stay in the U.S. and work in their field following graduation. In Thursday's ruling, Judge Schreier wrote that the cloud of potential deportation proceedings should not hang over Saxena as she moves to participate in the post-degree work program. 'Saxena's uncertain legal status as it relates to her ability to apply for OPT programs and the more-than speculative risk that she may be arrested and deported,' Schreier wrote, justifies an injunction to stop the federal government from interfering with Saxena's plans. ‘Thunderbolts*' Axes the Asterisk to Market Its Surprise Title Reveal

If you wondered why there's an asterisk attached to the title of the new movie 'Thunderbolts*,' you won't have to wait any longer to find out. Sure, you could have satisfied your curiosity the old-fashioned way by seeing the movie in theaters over the weekend, where it claimed the No. 1 spot at the box office. But as of Monday morning, the big reveal teased by that symbol will now be front and center on the movie's billboards, which have switched from 'Thunderbolts*' to the surprising title introduced in the film's closing credits. (If you would like to remain unspoiled, read no further and avert your eyes from billboards for the time being.) So long, Thunderbolts: This team of misfits, headed by Florence Pugh's weary assassin, Yelena Belova, ends the film rebranded as 'The New Avengers.' And now, on billboards, the movie itself will follow suit. The name change happens in the final scene of the Jake Schreier-directed film: Wily CIA director Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) tricks the newly assembled superteam into storming a news conference at which she introduces them to the world as the New Avengers. Then, as the end credits begin, the title 'Thunderbolts*' is ripped away like a comic-book page, revealing the new moniker. After three days in theaters, that rebrand has now made its way to billboards. 'It felt like, if Val is also trying to pull a switcheroo and sell the New Avengers to the world, we could do that, too,' Schreier said in an interview with The New York Times on Saturday. 'Especially given that the asterisk has been on the movie for a year, hopefully it doesn't feel sweaty — it feels like this was a plan and we built up to it.' Incorporating the new moniker into the marketing may also be an acknowledgment that keeping a movie secret is harder than ever these days, when surprises can be splashed across social media within milliseconds of release. Schreier, who pitched the asterisk during his initial meetings on the movie, credits Marvel Studios and its president, Kevin Feige, for a willingness to experiment with the title switch. 'It's very fun that they were open to embracing that,' Schreier said. He acknowledged that clips containing the spoiler have already made their way online, so why not make it work in their favor? 'It's so interesting in this world, and Kevin talks about it sometimes, where sometimes they wanted things to leak and they don't,' Schreier said. 'I think we all assumed that it would be a bigger part of the conversation already, so it'll be interesting to see what happens.' —NYT

Marvel Eyeing 'Thunderbolts' Director for 'X-Men'

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors After a long wait, Marvel may have finally found the director who will bring the X-Men into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Deadline reports that Jake Schreier, director of "Thunderbolts*" (or "*The New Avengers"), is in early talks to helm "X-Men". The script for the film has already been written by Michael Lesslie with Kevin Feige producing. Read More: Fan-Favorite Star From 'The Bear' Cast in 'Spider-Man 4' Deadline reports that things have been looking in favor of Schreier directing "X-Men" ever since positive early reactions to "Thunderbolts*" began pouring in. They also say that while other studios have come knocking, the director has been turning down other work, possibly to make room for "X-Men". Promotional material for "X2: X-Men United". Promotional material for "X2: X-Men United". 20th Century Studios It isn't exactly a shock that Marvel would consider Schreier a top contender to bring the X-Men back into the fold. "Thunderbolts*" not only earned overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics, but pulled in $162 million globally on its first weekend. Marvel has taken its time bringing the X-Men into the MCU and has slowly been introducing the very notion of mutants into the narrative while at the same time teasing fans with clever cameos. As early as the 2021 series "WandaVision" the appearance of Evan Peters as Quicksilver had fans speculating the series would open the doors for the X-Men. Fans have since been treated to the return of "X-Men" actors such as Patrick Stewart in "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" and Kelsey Grammer in "The Marvels". In the meantime characters such as Iman Vellani's Ms. Marvel and Namor of "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" have been teased as early examples of mutants in the MCU. Last year's "Deadpool & Wolverine" brought Hugh Jackman back to his signature role and connected the world of the cinematic X-Men to that of the larger MCU, but without bringing them into Earth-616, the prime Marvel timeline. "Avengers: Doomsday" promises to do even more with the X-Men. During Marvel's epic 5-hour cast announcement, it was revealed "X-Men" actors Stewart, Grammer, Ian McKellen, Rebecca Romijn, James Marsden, and Alan Cumming would all be appearing, presumably as their famous mutant personas. "Thunderbolts*" is playing in theaters now. The film is directed by Jake Schreier and stars Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, David Harbour, Wyatt Russell, Olga Kurylenko, Lewis Pullman, Geraldine Viswanathan, Chris Bauer, Wendell Edward Price, Hannah John-Kamen, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus.
