Movie Tea: MCU Eyeing Familiar Director To Bring X-Men To MCU; John Boyega Wants To Return To Star Wars
Some things are sweeter the second time around.
From the planned return of the X-Men in bigger and bolder fashion, to the return of a star as an act of redemption for him and his role – here are the latest deets on what Disney has cooking for us behind the scenes.
'Thunderbolts*' Director Jake Schreier Eyed For Upcoming MCU X-Men Movie
It may have taken 20 long years, but if the arrival of Deadpool and Wolverine in the MCU says anything, it's that something big is coming to the cinematic franchise. As you may have known, the big mouse has acted like Thanos himself, gathering all the pieces of the Marvel IP like they were Infinity Stones for a massive power play. With every piece now in their appropriate place, we might soon see what Disney has in store for us.
With the recent success of the 'Thunderbolts*,' many are ecstatic to see what the MCU has in store for future installments of the franchise. However, it seems that the President of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige, is thinking far ahead into the future, especially with the end of the Multiverse Saga close at hand. According to Deadline, Marvel executives are eyeing Jake Schreier, the director of 'Thunderbolts*', to kickstart the MCU's age of mutant-kind.
Having perfectly executed the recent blockbuster film to commercial and critical success, Schreier has instantly shortlisted himself as the director who would bring the X-Men to the MCU. According to Deadline, it's believed that Schreier has met with Marvel about this potential future project, and if he were to agree, he'll be working with a script penned by Michael Lesslie (known for his work in 'Now You See Me: Now You Don't' and 'Dope Girls').
Schreier has gone on record to say that he is an absolute lover of all things X-Men, and the fact that his only showing in the MCU so far has been a roaring success easily makes him the best candidate to helm the film. With people still gushing over the recent 'Deadpool & Wolverine' as well as 'X-Men '97,' X-Men fever has never been higher, and we can expect it to only go up as more info gets dropped.
John Boyega Says He's Open To Return To Star Wars
We can all agree that the Star Wars sequel trilogy was quite a massive disaster for the franchise due to its messy direction and lack of a cohesive plan. However, we cannot fault the artists put put their hearts and souls into bringing their respective characters to life. None were more devoted to their roles, but were ultimately done dirty by the franchise, than lead stars Daisy Ridley and John Boyega.
As you may recall, 'The Force Awakens' heavily hinted, if not outright spelt it out, that John Boyega's Finn was supposed to be a Jedi, right down to the promotional material. However, this never came to pass, as subsequent films pivoted towards tackling an entirely different plot altogether. But as time heals all wounds, the franchise is finally taking a swing at what comes after the sequel trilogy, with Ridley herself stepping up and returning to the scene. Not only that, but she also hinted that she'd love to see Boyega join alongside her.
Following the recent Fan Expo Philadelphia, Boyega finally responded, confirming that he is open to return to the franchise and reprise his role as Finn. Not only that, but he has even hinted that he has spoken to Daisy about it.
In the panel, he addressed the question of his returning and he said the following: 'C'mon, yeah, of course. That would be fun to do, but contractually I'm on three movies and then after that, we don't know what's happening until they, you know, give you a few calls and say 'You should come back' and all that kind of stuff. And because of the whole storm after Star Wars, I think Disney felt a little bit like, 'Does he still want to be a part of it?' I'm like, damn, like, I can like this franchise and still tell you that certain elements wasn't all the way there. It doesn't remove your love for the whole entire franchise.
Not only that, but he also took the opportunity to get some good digs in at the executive helming the project, essentially saying he will be back if they are 'treating the character well' and if they are 'fulfilling the arc that was teased', as well as 'approaching it by having a plan of what they're gonna do throughout the whole series.'
These words were incredibly pointed, as several Star Wars projects have been left in limbo and were never revisited again, something that Boyega is painfully aware of. This exact choice of words is perhaps him saying that he is interested in joining the upcoming trilogy currently being penned by Simon Kinberg. Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy referred to it as 'the new saga that moves us into the future'.
Though it is unconfirmed that Ridley's Rey will be the main star of this upcoming trilogy, the likely answer is 'yes', as she is their most important cinematic asset in the recent Star Wars cinematic universe. Whether or not Boyega will be in it is anyone's guess, but we are damn sure he's all for it.

‘Mission' misses, ‘Karate Kid' stumbles as ‘Stitch' stays strong at North American box office
LOS ANGELES, June 2 — Disney's family-friendly Lilo & Stitch, a live-action remake of the 2002 animated film, won the North American box office for a second week in a row, taking in another US$63 million (RM268 million), industry estimates showed Sunday. So far, its worldwide take is at a whopping US$610 million, Exhibitor Relations said. Maia Kealoha (as Lilo), Hannah Waddingham, Courtney B. Vance and Zach Galifianakis star, while Chris Sanders again provides the voice of the chaos-creating blue alien Stitch. Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning — the latest, and ostensibly last, in the hugely successful Tom Cruise spy thriller series based on a 1960s TV show — took second place with US$27.3 million in the United States and Canada. The Paramount film has made another US$231 million overseas, which should help offset its massive production budget, reportedly at US$400 million. Debuting in a disappointing third place was Sony's Karate Kid: Legends, a sequel featuring Ralph Macchio — the star of the original 1984 classic — and action flick icon Jackie Chan, along with Ben Wang in the title role. It made US$21 million at the domestic box office and another US$26 million overseas. 'Legends is trying to invigorate the story with a new Kid — again — but business is not strong,' said David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research. In fourth place was Warner Bros. and New Line's horror film Final Destination: Bloodlines, at US$10.8 million. And another horror film, Bring Her Back, debuted in fifth place with US$7.1 million. 'This is a very good opening for an original horror movie that cost only US$4.5 million to make,' said Gross. Rounding out the top 10 were: Sinners (US$5.2 million) Thunderbolts (US$4.8 million) Friendship (US$2.6 million) The Last Rodeo (US$2.1 million) J-Hope Hope on the Stage — live tour broadcast (US$940,000) — AFP

Superheroes, dinosaurs, and Pedro Pascal: Summer blockbuster season is here!
Ethan Hunt's last mission? A new Superman? Two genre-spanning Pedro Pascal films, including a romance and a superhero movie? Hollywood's pulling out the stops this summer movie season, which kicked off with the release of Thunderbolts . May also brought big studio releases like live-action Lilo & Stitch , Final Destination Bloodlines and Mission: Impossible: Final Reckoning . Next month heats up with race cars in F1 , adventure in How To Train Your Dragon , zombies in 28 Years Later and beautiful killers in Ballerina and M3gan 2.0 . July is supercharged with Jurassic World Rebirth , Superman , Fantastic Four: First Steps and The Naked Gun . August delivers big with action ( Nobody 2 ), horror ( Weapons ), a lighthearted body-swap ( Freakier Friday ) and a New York love triangle ( Materialists ). And September closes the season with some supernatural ( The Conjuring 4 ) and romance ( A Big Bold Beautiful Journey ). Here's a guide to help make sense of the many, many options in theatres. Release dates are subject to change. Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning (Now showing) Nothing ever really ends in the land of franchise filmmaking, but the 'final' in the title suggests this could actually be Tom Cruise's last ride as Ethan Hunt. Even if it isn't, audiences can trust it'll be full of death-defying spectacles worthy of the big screen. Lilo & Stitch (Now showing) This live-action reimagining of the 2002 classic about orphaned Hawaiian sisters who unknowingly adopt an alien was directed by Marcel The Shell With Shoes On filmmaker Dean Fleischer Camp. Sydney Agudong, who plays older sister Nani, said: 'The beauty of this movie is that it highlights the idea of Aloha and Ohana and the family dynamics that happen here along with the aliens and the Hawaiian roller coaster ride.' Lilo &Stitch Karate Kid: Legends (June 5) Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio unite for the newest Karate Kid film, set three years after Cobra Kai and focusing on a new kid, Li, played by Ben Wang. 'It kind of harkens back to the previous entries in the franchise,' Wang said. 'It's a kid who is a fish out of water who comes to a new city and has to face down bullies.' Ana De Armas leads this John Wick spin-off about a deadly (and classically trained) assassin. Ballerina How To Train Your Dragon (June 12) Unlike most live adaptations of animated movies, filmmaker Dean DeBlois is behind both. DeBlois said their goal was to make the film 'really immersive', to dial up the sense of urgency and peril and 'to just pull the audience in and make them feel like these dragons are real, that you could own one, you could fly on the back of one'. Mason Thames plays Hiccup and Nico Parker takes on the role of Astrid in this epic fantasy sure to enchant a new generation (and the one who grew up on the original). The original team behind 28 Days Later, including director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland, return with a new entry featuring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer and Ralph Fiennes. This intergalactic adventure centres on an 11-year-old earthling (Yonas Kibreab) who is abducted by aliens and assumed to be a world leader. Oscar-winner Zoe Saldana is part of the voice cast. The creepy, dancing doll is back – as is an even more dangerous version on a killing spree whom she has to stop. Any questions? M3gan 2.0 Brad Pitt plays 'the best that never was', F1 driver Sonny Hayes, who's recruited to mentor a young up-and-comer (Damson Idris) in this high-octane film from Top Gun: Maverick filmmaker Joseph Kosinski. Real racing cars were used, driver Lewis Hamilton consulted and a new camera system was developed to give audiences an immersive experience. 'It's a story about a last-place team, a group of underdogs, and Sonny Hayes in his later years having one more chance to try to do something he was never able to do, which is win a race in F1,' Kosinski said. Jurassic World Rebirth (July 3) Filmmaker Gareth Edwards (a Jurassic Park superfan and the director of The Creator) is ushering in a new era of Jurassic movies and harkening back to the Steven Spielberg originals in this film with Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali and Jonathan Bailey. Much about the film is being kept top secret, but Edwards said David Koepp's script read like a love letter to Spielberg's early work. 'It's basically a mission story where these military types go to this island to get this DNA, then there's a twist,' Edwards said. 'This family ends up involved and it becomes a story of survival. It's like one giant roller coaster ride and once it gets going, it sort of doesn't stop.' James Gunn is ushering in a new era of Superman, with a fresh face in David Corenswet and the promise that he's a different Superman than what audiences have seen before. Gunn said that this is 'a Superman that's both more grounded in his own personality and his relationship, which is much more complex than has been in the past. And then also the big magic world of Superman being in the world of the DCU with flying dogs and robots and giant monsters'. There's romance with Rachel Brosnahan's Lois Lane, and a 'pretty scary' Lex Luthor in Nicholas Hoult. 'He's actually going to kill (Superman),' Gunn said. 'And that's cool to see.' I Know What You Did Last Summer (July 17) Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr reprise their roles from the 1997 slasher in this new instalment featuring an eerily similar situation and a cast of pretty young up-and-comers including Madelyn Cline, Chase Sui Wonders, Jonah Hauer-King and Tyriq Withers. I Know What You Did Last Summer Rihanna produced and stars as Smurfette in this new musical adventure. 'There's a purity to the Smurfs mythos,' said Nick Offerman, who voices Papa Smurf's brother Ken. 'That, I think, is what makes their appeal so timeless. They're a benevolent group of wee blue villagers who, you know, want to love one another and lead productive lives while fending off the world's forces of evil, usually represented by the machinations of some wizards out for ill gotten gains.' The Fantastic Four: First Steps (July 24) Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn and Ebon Moss-Bachrach unite to play 'Marvel's first family' in this retro-futuristic world set in 1960s New York. Director Matt Shakman (WandaVision, It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia) said they are the only superheroes in their world and are the leading lights of their age. While the scale and world building were on another level, Shakman said, 'it's also no different from all of the great comedies and dramas that I've done – in the end, it comes down to character, to relationships and to heart and humour'. Liam Neeson flexes his particular set of comedy skills as Frank Drebin Jr in this irreverent new entry from The Lonely Island veteran Akiva Schaffer, featuring Paul Walter Hauser and Pamela Anderson. Talk To Me filmmakers Danny and Michael Philippou return with this creepy new movie about death, resurrection and the arrival of an adopted kid who is not quite right. Sally Hawkins plays the mother. Sam Rockwell, Marc Maron, Craig Robinson, Awkwafina and Anthony Ramos return for another animated heist, but this time they're teaming up with a new squad called the Bad Girls (voiced by Danielle Brooks, Maria Bakalova and Natasha Lyonne). An entire classroom of children goes missing in filmmaker Zach Cregger's eerie follow-up to Barbarian, starring Josh Brolin, Julia Garner and Alden Ehrenreich. Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan are back as the body-swapping mother and daughter duo. Bob Odenkirk's former assassin Hutch Mansell can't catch a break. This time, Keanu Reeves joins the bloody fun. Dakota Johnson plays a matchmaker torn between two prospects (played by Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal) in love story from Past Lives filmmaker Celine Song. 'It's a modern love story that's set in New York City and it's inspired by the brief time that I worked as a professional matchmaker,' Song said. 'I really tried in this film to be really honest about the marketplace of dating, as the people actually experience it and live it today.' The Conjuring: Last Rites (Sept 4) Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga return to their roles as paranormal investigators and authors Ed and Lorraine Warren. A Big Bold Beautiful Journey (Sept 18) Those who have no interest in superheroes or the usual summer shenanigans might appreciate this romantic fantasy-drama from the singularly named Kogonada who made the intriguing dramas Columbus and After Yang. Originally slated to come out in May, the studio moved the film starring Margot Robbie, Colin Farrell, Phoebe Waller-Bridge because, according to Variety, 'a September release was more appealing to the studio, as it's filled with more horror and male-centred titles, allowing the female event film to stand out.' – AP

Premiere Date, Cast & More: What We Know About 'The Devil Wears Prada 2'
In 2006, the movie based on the novel of the same name, 'The Devil Wears Prada', premiered to the world and quickly became a success. The movie is a global phenomenon, making a lasting impact on pop culture. Twenty years later, the much-loved cult classic has confirmed its long-awaited sequel. In July 2024, there were reports that Walt Disney Studios was in the early stages of developing a sequel to 'The Devil Wears Prada'. A year later, the puzzle cheered over the good news that the movie is in the works! As fans prepare for the return of Miranda, Andy and more, here's what we've gathered about the sequel so far: The Movie Is Set To Premiere In May 2026 One recent update about the movie is that it's coming sooner than expected. After months of speculation, Disney confirmed that they have set the theatrical release date for the sequel for 1st May 2026. However, this date is for the US release, so international fans still have to wait to find out when (or if) the movie will be released in their respective countries. The Main Cast Reportedly Reprising Their Roles Of course, the movie wouldn't be complete without the iconic cast line-up. While nothing is confirmed, Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt will reportedly reprise their roles as Miranda Priestly, Andy Sachs and Emily Charlton. As for Stanley Tucci, there's still no news on whether he'll be back as Nigel Kipling, but fans are hopeful he'll also join the sequel. Fun fact: This could be Meryl's second time in a sequel, in all over her decades-long career. Notorious for never doing sequels, she had only reprised her role in 'Mamma Mia 2'. The Movie Might See Miranda Facing Off Against Emily While the book does have a sequel called 'Revenge Wears Prada', the movie version of the sequel won't be based on this new chapter. Instead, the upcoming movie reportedly follows Miranda as she navigates the challenges of the declining print publishing industry. Rumour has it that she will face off against Emily, who is now a high-powered executive for a luxury group that Miranda is eyeing for their advertising dollars. David Frankel Could Return To The Director's Chair The original 'The Devil Wears Prada' wouldn't have been a reality without the director, screenplay writer and producers. The great news is that writer Aline Brosh McKenna and producer Wendy Finerman will maintain their positions. Meanwhile, director David Frankel is in talks to helm the project again, but only time will tell if he's back in the director's chair. Sources: Variety, Vogue Arabia
