Robert Downey Jr's Doctor Doom In The Fantastic Four: First Steps? What We Know
Last Updated: Directed by Matt Shakman, The Fantastic Four: First Steps will officially kick off Phase 6 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel Studios' The Fantastic Four: First Steps is coming soon, and excitement has grown after a recent public test screening in Los Angeles. Some believe the screening was held because the studio is unsure if the movie will connect with audiences. But soon after the screening, details about the movie's post-credits scene started appearing online. According to Super Hero Hype, quoting popular scooper MyTimeToShineHello, the scene shows Sue Storm (played by Vanessa Kirby) reading to her son Franklin, who is also the child of Reed Richards, played by Pedro Pascal. When she briefly leaves the room, she returns to find Doctor Doom sitting beside Franklin, holding his mask. The leak also says that Doom's outfit is 'very comic accurate." While it has already been confirmed that Robert Downey Jr. will take on the role of Doctor Doom in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), this post-credits scene does not show his face, as per the scooper. Chris Evans, who played the Human Torch in the 2000s Fantastic Four movies, may or may not appear in First Steps. The scooper said, 'I know for a fact he filmed something, so it was either cut or will be in the final version of the film." Chris Evans is better known as Captain America in the MCU, but he also played the Human Torch in Deadpool & Wolverine (2024). The post-credits scene of the last MCU movie, Thunderbolts* (also called The New Avengers), showed the team receiving a distress signal from the Fantastic Four's spacecraft. Because of this, many fans thought The Fantastic Four: First Steps would end with the destruction of the Fantastic Four's reality, which forced them to escape to the main MCU timeline. But based on the leaked details from First Steps' post-credits scene, it looks like the Fantastic Four will succeed in saving their world from Galactus. Doom's arrival and the possible kidnapping of Franklin might be what pushes the team to travel to Earth-616 to warn others. The film is set in a 1960s-style, retro-futuristic world. Alongside Pedro Pascal and Vanessa Kirby, the film will see Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm/Human Torch and Ebon Moss-Bachrach in the role of Ben Grimm/The Thing. Together, they must stop Galactus (Ralph Ineson), a cosmic being who plans to devour the planet along with the Silver Surfer (Julia Garner). Directed by Matt Shakman, The Fantastic Four: First Steps hits theatres on July 25 and will officially kick off Phase 6 of the MCU. About the Author First Published: May 30, 2025, 16:55 IST

Box Office: Thunderbolts rises with USD 2.7 million Memorial Day Monday, closing in on USD 195 million US total
Marvel Studios' Thunderbolts continues its steady run at the US box office, collecting a solid USD 2.7 million on Memorial Day Monday. The film, which has now amassed USD 174 million domestically, benefited from the holiday boost with an impressive 43.1 percent increase over its previous Monday, despite losing 780 screens due to competition from new titles. The fourth Monday haul places Thunderbolts on track to surpass the lifetime US totals of early MCU titles Captain America: The First Avenger (USD 176.7M) and Thor (USD 181M) within the week. However, while the USD 200 million milestone now appears out of reach, the film is expected to close its domestic run around the USD 195 million mark, an impressive feat for an original ensemble entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Directed by Jake Schreier and written by Eric Pearson and Joanna Calo, Thunderbolts features Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, David Harbour, Wyatt Russell, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, among others. The story centers on a group of morally complex characters brought together for a perilous government mission that forces them to confront their pasts and rely on one another for survival. Initially teased in 2021, the Thunderbolts project was officially announced in 2022 and underwent significant rewrites during its development. Production was delayed by the 2023 Hollywood labour strikes, but filming resumed and concluded in mid-2024 across various locations, including Atlanta, Utah, and Kuala Lumpur. Premiering in London on April 22 before its US release on May 2, Thunderbolts was marketed as the final film of Phase Five of the MCU. The film's ending notably rebranded the team as The New Avengers, with the asterisk in its title symbolizing that transformation. Since then, Marvel Studios has begun embracing the move more prominently in post-release marketing. Despite facing stiff competition from blockbuster hits during the holiday weekend, Thunderbolts carved out its own success both critically and commercially. With a worldwide gross of USD 357 million so far, it currently ranks as the sixth highest-grossing film of 2025. The stronghold on Memorial Day Monday reinforces its staying power in theaters and its appeal to MCU fans eager for the franchise's evolving narrative.

Box Office: Thunderbolts crosses USD 170M domestically, surpassing Eternals despite losing screens
Marvel Studios' Thunderbolts has officially topped Eternals at the US box office, marking a significant milestone over the Memorial Day weekend. With a current domestic total of USD 171.4 million, the ensemble superhero film has surpassed the USD 164.9 million lifetime gross of Eternals despite a noticeable drop in theater count and fierce competition from new releases. Now marketed as The New Avengers following a post-credit reveal, Thunderbolts earned USD 9.2 million in its fourth 3-day weekend. The Florence Pugh -led action film dropped 44.8 percent from the previous weekend, with a loss of 780 theaters on Friday amid a crowded summer box office. Next weekend, the film is expected to overtake the US totals of Captain America: The First Avenger and Thor, which earned USD 176.7 million and USD 181 million, respectively, further cementing its success among early MCU titles. Despite the strong run, the film is unlikely to hit the coveted USD 200 million domestic mark, but a final US total of around USD 195 million appears locked in. Globally, Thunderbolts has already grossed USD 355 million, making it the fifth-highest-grossing film of 2025 so far. Directed by Jake Schreier and written by Eric Pearson and Joanna Cao, Thunderbolts was released in the US on May 2 as the final entry in Phase Five of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The star-studded cast includes Sebastian Stan, David Harbour, Wyatt Russell, Olga Kurylenko, Hannah John-Kamen, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and more alongside Pugh, portraying a team of antiheroes forced into an uneasy alliance on a mission that could lead to their redemption. Thunderbolts' production faced delays due to the 2023 Hollywood labor strikes, leading to some creative and casting changes. Filming eventually took place from February to June 2024 in Atlanta, Utah, and Kuala Lumpur. The film premiered in London on April 22 before its US release and received positive reviews for its surprising emotional core, grounded tone, and, of course, the ensemble performance. The asterisk in the title — originally mysterious — was revealed to stand for The New Avengers, signifying the rebranding of the team by the film's end. Marvel Studios has since shifted its promotional strategy accordingly. As Thunderbolts continues its run, it stands as both a commercial success and a pivotal point for the MCU's evolving future narrative.

Box Office: Thunderbolts crosses USD 350M mark but loses momentum, competition blocks predicted USD 400M run
Marvel Studios' Thunderbolts has crossed the USD 350 million mark at the global box office, but mounting competition appears to be cutting short its momentum. The ensemble superhero film, now also known as the New Avengers, earned just USD 5.6 million overseas in its fourth weekend — a steep 64.3 percent drop — signaling a rapid slowdown in international territories. By comparison, Captain America: Brave New World managed USD 9.2 million in the same frame. Currently, the film holds an international cume of USD 181.7 million across 53 markets. Coupled with its domestic total of USD 171.4 million, Thunderbolts now stands at USD 353.1 million globally. While that's a solid performance for a team-up film featuring mostly antiheroes, it's unlikely to hit the once-expected USD 400 million benchmark. Industry projections now peg its final global haul in the USD 380 to 390 million range. With a reported production budget of USD 180 million, excluding marketing costs, Thunderbolts may not deliver the kind of box office margin Marvel typically churns out. Nevertheless, it remains the fifth highest-grossing film of 2025 so far and marks another strong outing for Florence Pugh, who leads the cast comprising Sebastian Stan, David Harbour, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and more. Directed by Jake Schreier and written by Eric Pearson and Joanna Calo, the film centers on a group of antiheroes who are forced together on a dangerous mission that could lead to their redemption. Initially teased in the MCU back in 2021, Thunderbolts went through a lengthy development phase and experienced delays during the 2023 Hollywood labor disputes. Several cast changes followed before production resumed in early 2024. The film premiered at Leicester Square in London on April 22 and was released stateside on May 2 as the final entry in Phase Five of the MCU. The movie's closing sequence officially transitions the team into the New Avengers, with the film's asterisked title later revealed to signify the team's rebranding. Despite its underwhelming commercial performance, Thunderbolts will be a significant chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe due to its new narrative scope. Marvel is bound to extract more content using the New Avengers notion.
