'I worked behind the scenes on huge TV show - syphilis was our biggest challenge'

EXCLUSIVE: Behind your favourite TV shows are a team of creatives who work tirelessly to produce the biggest and best episodes. We chat to some of the experts... You sit in front of the TV and look for something to watch - do you choose Baby Reindeer on Netflix or maybe a historical series like Mary & George? Perhaps you want to tune into the latest series of Industry or sob at One Day? Whatever you choose, you'll be watching the work of a team of creatives who work long hours to ensure the end product is visually compelling. ‌ Ahead of the BAFTA Craft Awards this weekend, we spoke to the creatives behind some of this year's most captivating and exciting shows. ‌ Fake pox, tattoo bruises and wigs Paul Gooch, who worked on Sky's hit series Mary & George, shared details on what went into creating the elaborate hair styles and make-up for the historical drama. "We needed to create a form of Pox for our lead actor," he explained. "It could have been syphilis, a skin disease of a form of small pox. In the script it was non specific. "And for another character a full blown case of syphilis which are away at the soft bone tissue of the face. To do these effects we used a combination of tattoo transfers and pro bondo sculpted prosthetics. It took five of us an hour to achieve, along with a red rash, as it had to cover the actor's whole body. "Fun to do but very time consuming and man power heavy, for speed. Death, disease and ageing were a large part of this shows remit." ‌ In order to help with continuity, Paul shared bruising would be created as tattoo transfers so they're "fast to apply and always identical". Unfortunately when it comes to continuity, the weather can prove challenging for the hair and make-up team as Paul explained: "Maintaining elaborate hair styles in these conditions is a major part of our work alongside continuity, making sure things stay the same, so we don't give problems to the editors. "When using wigs and facial hair these require gluing to the skin. Damp weather will affect this too. Long working hours are also a factor. An average filming day for the makeup/hair department is around 16 to 18 hours long so maintaining these highly stylised looks is a long game. We use heavy duty hair products to help keep these sculptural styles." ‌ 'Electric' performances and 'tricky' scenes Industry writers Mickey Down and Konrad Kay had the job of showcasing Sagar Radia's character Rishi Ramdani's struggle with gambling. Reflecting on why the episode focussing on Rishi's downfall had such an impact, they shared: "Because of its relentless pace and the fact the script turned the screws on the character at every available opportunity, married to Sagar's electric performance. Very hard to take your eyes off him. Very volatile. Very unpredictable." Meanwhile, writer of Netflix hit One Day, Nicole Taylor, detailed how creating the script was much harder than she anticipated. ‌ "The greatest challenge was probably figuring out what the 'motor' of each episode would be," she explained. "In a story like this about people and a relationship over time, without any particular 'plot' as such, without traditional TV 'hooks', how could I lock viewers into this story? How could I make sure they never looked away? "The hardest scenes to write were those in episode 14 and the opening scenes were tricky too. It was all quite tricky! Trickier than I expected – ha. With material that brilliant, one might have hoped it was a cut and paste job but alas no!" ‌ The scenes you'll never see Baby Reindeer took Netflix by storm when it quietly dropped on the streamer in early 2024. It had viewers gripped from start to finish but fans might be surprised to learn key scenes were cut from the series. Editor Benjamin Gerstein divulged: "I think scenes that end up on the cutting room floor mostly end up there for a reason. Sometimes you have to lose moments you love in order for the whole episode or series to work best. Having said that, there was a bar-fight I really liked that we ended up losing. ‌ "It was tragic and funny but didn't fit the overall thrust of the episode as we accelerated towards the end." Reflecting on the challenges he faced when editing, Benjamin shared: "There were some pretty traumatic sequences in the show, and cutting them was challenging on an emotional as well as technical level. "I found it meant making yourself both emotionally available and objectively distant at the same time so that you could feel what the audience might feel in watching and also have the capacity to make creative decisions that were more measured." The BAFTA TV Craft Awards are on 27th April

BBC announces cast for What It Feels Like For A Girl

The BBC has announced the cast and released first-look pictures for What It Feels Like For A Girl, its forthcoming Y2K spin on a coming-of-age drama, inspired by the acclaimed memoir of the same name by the award-winning writer and journalist Paris Lees. Produced by Hera Pictures (Mary & George, Temple, Hamnet) for BBC iPlayer and BBC Three, in association with ITV Studios, the eight-part series stars Ellis Howard (Catherine the Great, Red Rose) as Byron, with Hannah Walters (A Thousand Blows, Boiling Point, Time, This is England), Laura Haddock (The Recruit, The Capture) and Michael Socha (Showtrial, This is England). Also joining the cast are Laquarn Lewis (Jamie Johnson), Hannah Jones, Adam Ali (Waterloo Road), Alex Thomas-Smith (Too Much), Calam Lynch (Sweetpea, Miss Austen, Bridgerton), Jake Dunn (Renegade Nell), and Dickie Beau (Bohemian Rhapsody). What It Feels Like For A Girl was filmed in South Wales and Nottingham. What It Feels Like For A Girl is a raw, heartbreaking and hilarious drama that explores escape, self-discovery and self-destruction. It's a new millennium and there's a whole world to explore. But teenager Byron (Ellis Howard) is stuck in a small working-class town that hasn't been the same since the coal mine shut down in the 80s. Byron needs to get away and doesn't care how. Life explodes in a rush when Byron escapes to Nottingham's vibrant underworld, discovering a realm of drink, drugs, and a chaotic family of troublemakers – 'The Fallen Divas'. Byron finds a gang of kindred spirits in the mesmerising Lady Die (Laquarn Lewis), Sticky Nikki (Alex Thomas-Smith), Dirty Damian (Adam Ali), while an intense rivalry brews between Byron and the beautiful, acid-tongued Sasha (Hannah Jones). Between them, they beg, steal and skank their way on a rollercoaster ride of hedonism at the heart of the UK's early 2000s club scene. The party can't last forever though, and when Byron is seduced by bad-boy Liam, a shocking encounter occurs that will change life forever. Calam Lynch is Max, Jake Dunn is Liam and Dickie Beau is Peter. Further cast includes Emma Shipp (Rivals), Sekou Diaby (Boarders), Laura Checkley (Screw), Oliver Huntingdon (Sherwood), Lorn Macdonald (Bridgerton), and Rhys Connah (Happy Valley), with guest appearances from Fay Ripley (Cold Feet) and Selina Mosinski (aka Charity Shop Sue). Paris Lees says: 'This is a proudly working-class story, and it needed a cast who could bring it to life authentically. We've struck gold with these highly talented actors, some of whom are already familiar faces - and some who are about to be. The biggest challenge was always the lead role – we're following someone who's going from, in the eyes of the outside world, a schoolboy, right up to a trans woman starting university, and all that's in between. The moment I saw Ellis, I recognised something in him - a cheekiness, a delicateness, a complexity - and knew he was the one. And he rose to the challenge, again and again. The chemistry between El, Hannah, Laquarn and the rest of the Fallen Divas is something you can only dream of in drama.' Liza Marshall, Hera Pictures MD and Executive Producer says: 'We couldn't be prouder of the phenomenal cast leading What It Feels Like for a Girl, who join a team of brilliant creatives in bringing Paris's daringly distinctive vision to the screen. Ellis and the rest of the ensemble - an exciting mix of new and established talent - deliver incredible performances, bringing these anarchic, sharp-witted characters to life.' Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama, says: 'We can't wait to take viewers back to the early noughties to see our magnificent cast shine in this big-hearted and brave new series. Paris and the Hera Pictures team have created a phenomenal eight episodes of genre-defining television, packed with swagger, humour, and humanity.' Paris Lees is the creator and lead writer of What It Feels Like For A Girl, and Brian Welsh (Beats, Black Mirror) is lead director. Ng Choon Ping (Femme) and Marie Kristiansen (Delete Me) also direct. Executive producers are Paris Lees and Brian Welsh, Liza Marshall and Ron O'Berst for Hera Pictures, and Nawfal Faizullah for the BBC. Frances du Pille (The Sixth Commandment, The Outlaws) is producer. Paris Lees is lead writer on the series, joined by Georgia Christou, Paul Williams, Sarah Simmonds and Mika Onyx Johnson. What It Feels Like For A Girl will arrive on BBC iPlayer and BBC Three later this year. ITV Studios will handle international distribution. SJP

A ‘great shock': Julianne Moore's children's book under review by Trump administration

Julianne Moore has said it is a 'great shock' to learn that one of her books had been 'banned by the Trump Administration' from schools serving the children of US military personnel and civilian defence employees. The Boogie Nights and Mary & George star wrote that she was 'truly saddened' by the news in an Instagram post on Sunday. Last Monday, the Department of Defense circulated a memo stating that it is examining library books 'potentially related to gender ideology or discriminatory equity ideology topics'. After access to all library books was suspended for a week for a review, a 'small number of items' were identified and have been kept for 'further review', it said. Moore's Freckleface Strawberry, a story about a girl who dislikes her freckles but learns to live with them, is among the books caught up in the blanket review, according to a list obtained by the Guardian. However, it is not known whether the title was selected for further review or for withdrawal. 'It is a book I wrote for my children and for other kids to remind them that we all struggle, but are united by our humanity and our community,' said Moore. The review of library books is part of an examination of all 'instructional resources', according to the Defense Department, to check that its schools are aligned with Trump's recent executive orders Ending Radical Indoctrination in K-12 Schooling and Defending Women from Gender Ideology Extremism. Moore, who won an Oscar in 2015 for Still Alice, said that she is 'particularly stunned' by the news because she is a 'proud graduate' of the now-closed Frankfurt American high school, operated by the Defense Department, adding that her father is a Vietnam veteran and spent his career in the US army. Literary delights delivered direct to you after newsletter promotion 'I could not be prouder of him and his service to our country. It is galling for me to realise that kids like me, growing up with a parent in the service and attending a [Defense Department] school, will not have access to a book written by someone whose life experience is so similar to their own. And I can't help but wonder what is so controversial about this picture book that has caused it to be banned by the US government.' Other books that are part of the 'compliance review' include No Truth Without Ruth by Kathleen Krull, about Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the second woman to sit on the US supreme court. Books removed from library shelves have been relocated to 'the professional collection for evaluation with access limited to professional staff'. 'I am truly saddened and never thought I would see this in a country where freedom of speech and expression is a constitutional right,' added Moore.
