Girl with rare blood disorder finds comfort in crafting
ARLINGTON, S.D. (KELO) —Being sick is never an easy thing, but one little girl who spent a year in the hospital is doing what she can to lift other children's spirits. 7-year-old Belleamy Sikkink is the second oldest of five children in her family. 'I like to call her my silly goose,' Belleamy's dad, Trevor Sikkink said. 'She's a very spunky, very intelligent little girl. She is very strong-minded. If she's going to do something, she will do it. And she's shown us that many times, and especially in the last, like, year and a half,' Belleamy's mom, Bre Sikkink said. Which drinks brought home the gold in Mash Madness In 2023, Belleamy's mom Bre noticed some bruising on her daughter. After getting bloodwork done, they found out she had a platelet count of 15,000, which is a very low number. 'We immediately took her to Sanford Children's, and then from there got a pre-diagnosis of aplastic anemia, which is, really severe form of anemia that requires a bone marrow transplant because it causes bone marrow failure,' Bre said. 'I didn't really know how to process it. I just knew that, right away, we were not going to give up until she was better,' Trevor said. For the past year and a half, Belleamy has been in and out of the hospital, spending a lot of time in Minnesota. 'They were able to fly her to Minneapolis, and continued her care there, where she had to get stronger, essentially to be able to go through bone marrow transplant because it, requires so much for your body, wiping out your immune system with chemotherapy, and then getting the new transplant with the new bone marrow itself is sure, and a very hard thing to accept someone else's into your own body,' Bre said. While she is home now, she still makes weekly trips to Sanford, and is working on getting better. 'She's kind of focusing on healing her kidneys more. She has graft versus host disease from the transplant, which is a possible thing that can happen. So she's been dealing with that, for the last, like, eight months-ish,' Bre said. One thing that got Belleamy through her hospital stays– was crafting. 'She was in one of her lowest points, she was still crafting and making bracelets and stuff, and she worked through the chemo, radiation and then all of her infusions and she did crafting the whole way through,' Trevor said. 'She made, like, 300 bracelets for all the guests at the wedding. So she kept really busy with that,' Bre said. Since Belleamy understands what it is like to be in the hospital, she wanted to put together kits that other families can buy to keep their kids busy if they are going through a similar situation. 'Bellamy played with so much play-dough while she was there, so we thought it would be really cool to make play-dough kits, and be able to give back to kids like her,' Bre said. Along with each kit, comes a special handwritten note from Belleamy, encouraging them to not give up. 'It all comes from her crafting abilities and her caring little heart. She wants kids in the hospital that are just like her to be able to keep busy and do something to keep them busy and give them a little motivation to, you know, never give up,' Trevor said. And that message extends to all children struggling with an illness. 'And that's what she hopes is that she can motivate and inspire young kids to do the same thing she did,' Trevor said. Which drinks brought home the gold in Mash Madness
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The numbers are in from Mash Madness, which had 30 drinks competing across 3 categories. People sipped and savored over 7,500 drinks during this year's Mash Madness. DTSF's Restaurant Week will have a taste of SD 'We saw a lot more people participating. Both our member base and the businesses, but also, you know, more participants and more people trying to drink. So it was really fun to see,' DTSF marketing manager Jeb Cooper said. Instead of just beer this year, the contest added 2 new categories: craft cocktail, a non-alcoholic and coffee section. 'Adding on the cocktail and the NA, we saw great numbers,' Cooper said. 'We will likely see it just grow bigger and bigger as most events do as they get older.' The winner of the craft cocktail section was Lucky's, with their Key Lime Pie-jito. They were trailing in the competition until the final day. 'We're not necessarily on the top of anybody's list when it comes to making cocktails, especially craft cocktails,' Lucky's Bar Supervisor Avery Baker said. 'I'm glad that I could kind of open that door for us and show people that we're, we're capable of a lot more than doing a Captain and Coke or vodka Redbull.' Perch took home the trophy in the non-alcoholic and coffee category with their Pandan Cloud. It is just one of the titles Perch has taken home in 2025. 'We've had a great year. Third in Burger battle. We got, first in March Madness, and we just opened in June. So we're, like, just riding the waves right now,' Perch's Front House Manager Rachel Begeman said. In the long standing beer bracket, Remedy Brewing Co. won for the first time with their Huckleberry Heaven brew. No prison yet, but $50M has already been spent 'Whatever the case, it definitely drove some traffic for us downtown. Obviously, we saw quite a number of just sales of that beer specifically. So it seemed like quite a few people were here just to try it for Mash Madness,' Remedy's Head Brewer Tyler Wasberg said. Over $62,000 was spent on this year's drinks, with an economic impact of nearly $290,000. You can order the drinks at Perch and Lucky's while supplies last, but Remedy has sold out of its brew. The clock runs out on Mash Madness
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Time is running out if you'd like to have a say in who wins Mash Madness. It's a busy morning at Coffea Roasterie in downtown Sioux Falls. The popular coffee spot is one of 29 businesses participating in Mash Madness, which ends with the month of March. Trial starts Tuesday for accused DSS thief 'It's been really enjoyable doing Mash Madness,' Coffea Roasterie co-owner Darin Kaihoi said. Coffea joined the mix when Mash Madness expanded beyond craft beer to include craft cocktail and non-alcoholic/coffee categories. 'We love playing around with different drink combinations and coming up with fun ways to introduce coffee to people in a way that's a little bit different than the norm from how they would normally perceive it,' Kaihoi said. Coffea's entry is the Peach Gobbler, which looks a lot like beer but is actually a clarified cold brew. 'A lot of people don't perceive coffee as something that could be carbonated and chilled and combined with floral-type of ingredients and things like that, and so it's been a really fun reaction of people just saying 'wow, this is coffee? This is crazy',' Kaihoi said. 'I'm at Coffea two, three, four times a week,' Sioux Falls resident Thadeus Giedd said. Giedd is no stranger to caffeinated beverages. 'If it's not espresso or cappuccino, it's tea,' Giedd said. And he's a fan of Coffea's first attempt at Mash Madness. 'Tried the Peach Gobbler and it was delicious. It's like a sour fusion hybrid and yeah it's wonderful,' Giedd said. The drink and competition also provide a boost in sales. 'These things are always impactful and we appreciate other businesses jumping in and the community just having fun with it and getting involved,' Kaihoi said. The Peach Gobbler will stay on the menu while supplies last. The 'Mash Madness' champions for Craft Beer, Craft Cocktail, and Non-Alcoholic or Coffee will be announced at 10 a.m. Friday.
