2024 Maharashtra Assembly polls data: Congress to hold ‘torch march', demand probe into LoP Rahul's allegations on EC
The Maharashtra Congress on Thursday is set to hold a 'Mashal Morcha' (Torch March) across the state against the alleged 'theft of votes' in the recently conducted assembly elections.
This development comes a week after Congress MP and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, in his article in The Indian Express alleged electoral malpractices in the state assembly elections. Replying to Gandhi, the Election Commission of India denied any wrongdoing or malpractice in the conduct of the election.
Congress state president Harshvardhan Sapkal will participate in the protest in Gadchiroli. All Congress leaders, MPs and legislators have been asked to participate in protests across the state.
'The BJP coalition government has come to power in the state by stealing votes in the assembly elections. Votes have been stolen with the help of the Election Commission and this vote theft is not being investigated. The credibility of the Election Commission is at stake and the democratic system is being attacked,' said Sapkal.
He said that the state Congress will take out torch marches across the state on Thursday, to create awareness and demand an investigation into the scam in the assembly elections.
Sapkal alleged that there is doubt about the voting percentage announced by the Election Commission. 'After the voting ended, the voters who declared 58 percent showed 66.5 percent the next day, an increase of 7.83 percent. This is a big scam. It is the duty of the Election Commission to conduct fair and transparent elections, but if there are clouds of suspicion on them, it is dangerous for democracy,' he said.
