Haryanvi singer Masoom Sharma booked for singing Chambal Ke Daku during live show at PU

Popular Haryanvi singer Masoom Sharma has been booked by the Chandigarh Police for singing a song that allegedly incited aggression at an event, which later saw the killing of a student, at the Panjab University (PU) campus. The FIR has been registered at Sector 11 Police Station following a complaint that Sharma performed Chambal Ke Daku during a live performance on March 28. According to police sources, the song has been officially banned by the Haryana government for allegedly promoting violence. Despite this, Sharma sang it during the event, violating prior written assurance he had given to the organisers and police that no controversial or banned songs would be performed. Significantly, the event turned violent, and a clash broke out among students during the concert. In the altercation, a student named Aditya was brutally attacked with sharp weapons and killed. According to the police, Sharma's actions are being taken seriously as the banned song is believed to have incited aggression during the gathering. The Haryana government has already banned around 30 songs for promoting gun culture and violence — many of them sung by Sharma himself. Even before the concert took place, it had courted controversy. A petition was filed in the Punjab and Haryana High Court seeking a ban on songs that promote vulgarity and glorify weapons. The petitioner had demanded stricter regulation of such content in public performances. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are examining the possible links between the song's performance and the subsequent violence, police sources said.
