AmaZulu hold Pirates to a draw in Durban
The teams were locked at 0-0 at the break. Orlando Pirates were held to a 1-1 draw in a Betway Premiership match played at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Saturday. Usuthu appeared to take all three points when Tshepang Moremi put them in the lead in the 66th minute, only for Mpho Mvelase to strike in the 77th minute to earn the Buccaneers a share of the spoils. It was the young midfielder's first goal for the Pirates first team. Pirates had to make an early change in the first half when Mbekezeli Mbokazi failed to recover from a knock and was replaced by Tapelo Xoki in the 21st minute. Maswanganyi missed a good chance to put Pirates in the lead in the 24th minute when he was set up by Mohau Nkota, but the Bucs midfielder shot wide from close range. Three minutes later, Richard Ofori denied Deon Hotto from long range as the visitors continued to ask questions from the Pirates defence. Maswanganyi was presented with a chance to redeem himself in the 44th minute following another good buildup from Pirates, but he shot narrowly wide of goal. The teams were locked at 0-0 at the break. Usuthu coach Arthur Zwane made two changes at the start of the second half bringing in goalkeeper Mlondi Mbanjwa for the injured Ofori and striker Augustine Mulenga for Tebogo Mashigo. The Buccaneers continued to dominate possession in the second half, but it was the home team that took the lead through an own goal by Maswanganyi, who tried to clear Just when it looked as though AmaZulu were going to take all the three points on offer, Selepe grabbed the equaliser for Pirates pouncing on a loose ball inside the Usuthu penalty area and putting the ball into the net. Govt's debt service costs must be renegotiated, says chair of Parliament's finance committee
CAPE TOWN - The chairperson of Parliament's standing committee on finance, Joe Maswanganyi, believes the government's debt service costs must be renegotiated. The country spends R1.2 billion a day paying off its debt. With the Finance Minister backtracking on a value-added tax (VAT) increase to fund the 2025 national budget, this will widen the deficit and increase public debt. Responding to the second tabling of a national budget on Wednesday, Maswanganyi said at a parliamentary briefing on Thursday that he believes the third version is credible, pro-poor and pragmatic.

Pirates get derby final boost and keep alive title chances beating Arrows
Orlando Pirates had to work hard, ultimately flexing their muscle to produce a 2-1 Betway Premiership victory against Lamontville Golden Arrows at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Wednesday night to keep alive their fading title hopes. Leaders Mamelodi Sundowns (61 points from 24 games) need seven points form their last four matches to clinch a record-extending eighth successive championship. Pirates (52 points from 23 games), though, kept up the pressure so that if the Brazilians somehow do slip up, they can be there to feed on the scraps. Patrick Maswanganyi put the Buccaneers ahead in the 51st minute, as Siyanda Mthanti soon equalised for coach Manqoba Mngithi's keyed up Arrows, in need of points in 14th place, in the 59th. The ambulance is back 🚑🚨 It's a special assist from Kabelo Dlamini 🤩 📺 Stream #BetwayPrem on DStv: @McDonalds_SA — SuperSport Football ⚽️ (@SSFootball) May 6, 2025 Substitute Tshegofatso Mabasa produced the 72nd-minute winner for coach José Riveiro's Bucs. The result comes as a boost for Pirates ahead of their Soweto derby Nedbank Cup final clash against Kaizer Chiefs at the same venue on Saturday (3.30pm). That derby, and the win against Arrows follow Bucs' 2-1 win against Chiefs in a league clash at FNB Stadium this past Saturday. Both sides had their chances in an opening half where Arrows at times rattled Pirates by pressing them effectively. In the second half, Pirates, despite conceding an equaliser, upped their tempo and level of control and used their player power to muscle an advantage and victory. For Maswanganyi played Kabelo Dlamini into the box who saw his shot cleared off the line, while Karim Kimvuidi skipped past some players on the tight and shot into the side-netting. Shades of prime Zinedine Zidane 🔥 This turn from Kabelo Dlamini 🥵 #BetwayPrem | #SSDiski — SuperSport Football ⚽️ (@SSFootball) May 6, 2025 Just before the break Mthanthi was put through on the right of the box by Siphesihle Msomi and shot across the face. Six minutes back from the change rooms Bucs got the breakthrough when Dlamini's superbly-weighted pass from just behind the centre circle picked out the run of Maswanganyi peeling off his marker and in space to sprint through, round goalkeeper Edward Maova and finish. Substitute Simphiwe Selebe, the 20-year-old youth product making his second appearance for Pirates off the bench for Makhehlene Makhaula at the break, played in a pass from the left for wingback Bandile Shandu on the run in the middle to control and volley high. But Arrows earned a deserved goal on balance of chances when they worked the ball across the box to Velemseni Ndwandwe on the right to stab in a pass to the feet of Mthanti to finish past Sipho Chaine. Pirates regained the lead when a half-clearance was headed back into Arrows' box to Maswanganyi to head in the direction of Mabasa, who blasted a volley past Maova.

Orlando Pirates could potentially lose star player Maswanganyi
Orlando Pirates could potentially lose star player Patrick Maswanganyi in the next transfer window. The Bucs supporters might have to brace themselves for a massive blow. Maswanganyi, the club's talisman and reigning PSL Player of the Year, looks set to make a sensational return to Europe. Maswanganyi spent much of his youth career in Portugal, developing his talent with UD Oliveirense and Académica de Coimbra. Now, he wants to finish what he started, by conquering European football in his prime. Farouk Khan, Maswanganyi's former mentor at Stars of Africa, ignited transfer rumors earlier this season when he boldly stated: 'He [Maswanganyi] is ready for Europe. Even as a player, he really wants to play there. You know if Orlando Pirates can allow him to go then it won't benefit only Pirates from the sale but also the player himself and the country.' Khan believes the playmaker missed his earlier chance due to impatience but insists the window is still wide open. 'He could have stayed longer in Portugal… But nothing is lost. He can still go now and make it big.' Reports suggest that UD Oliveirense—Maswanganyi's former club—has already entered advanced talks with Orlando Pirates. A source close to the deal revealed in January: 'It's no longer just about an inquiry, it's about negotiations now… They really want him back in Portugal.' The Portuguese outfit reportedly values the 27-year-old at R40 million, and they're pushing hard to bring him back. The source added. 'The only issue that is there now is the R40 million that the club has put on Maswanganyi's head… Since they are believed to have opened up negotiations then it will all depend on their offer that they table to Pirates.' Fueling exit rumours even further, Maswanganyi, affectionately known as 'Tito', has not featured in Orlando Pirates' last two starting eleven line-ups. He watched from the bench as the Buccaneers suffered back-to-back defeats against Pyramids FC in the CAF Champions League and Sekhukhune United in the league. Frustrated fans and pundits alike are raising eyebrows. One source exclaimed. 'Why is Tito not starting? Is he still injured? No. Crucial games against Pyramids and Sekhukhune United, which they both lost. Something is going on there… You leaving your best players on the bench, why?' Maswanganyi's future now hangs in the balance. Will Orlando Pirates let him chase his European dream, or will they demand more than Oliveirense can afford? One thing is clear, the football world is watching, and Tito's next move could shake up Pirates future plans.
