Mauricio Ruffy targets multiple top 15 lightweights, including Michael Chandler
Surging UFC lightweight Mauricio Ruffy expects an opportunity to break into the rankings in his next outing. Ruffy (12-1 MMA, 3-0 UFC) has quickly gained traction as a name to watch at 155 pounds following a hot start to his octagon tenure, highlighted by a Knockout of the Year contender against King Green at UFC 313 in March. The Brazilian thinks the natural next step is to fight someone in the rankings, and he sees three specific names that fit the bill. "I really believe that a name like that will come," Ruffy told Spin Genie. "Like Michael Chandler, Mateusz Gamrot, (Benoit) Saint Denis, I believe that one of those guys could come." Ruffy, 29, said his confidence that a potential breakthrough fight is on the horizon stems form the fact he was already offered one. He was offered a short-notice bout against Gamrot earlier this year, but the circumstances prevented it. That opportunity passed once, but whether it' Gamrot (25-3 MMA, 8-3 UFC) again, a former title challenger like Chandler (23-10 MMA, 2-5 UFC) or another dangerous name like Saint Denis (14-3 MMA, 6-3 UFC), he will be ready for them all. "The UFC also offered me Mateusz Gamrot, but we were four days away from the fight and Jean Silva would be there to fight, so none of my coaches would be in the corner," Ruffy said. "This put us in a difficult position to accept the fight. Nevertheless, I'm confident that a significant opponent, like Michael Chandler, Mateusz Gamrot, or Saint Denis, will eventually come my way. We'll see how it unfolds."

UFC on ABC 8 results: Rafael Fiziev snaps three-fight skid vs. Ignacio Bahamondes
Rafael Fiziev was in desperate need of a victory at UFC on ABC 8, and he got the job done against Ignacio Bahamondes to snap a three-fight skid. Although his previous defeats came to the elite in Justin Gaethje twice and Mateusz Gamrot, it was an important moment for Fiziev (13-4 MMA, 7-4 UFC), who mixed up his striking and grappling well over three rounds against Bahamondes (17-6 MMA, 6-3 UFC) for the unanimous decision win with three 30-27 scorecards in the lightweight contest at Baku Crystal Hall in Baku, Azerbaijan. The opening round was somewhat tentative, with Fiziev and Bahamondes both working to find their range and score something of significance. There were many kicks exchanged, and in between them some clean punches landed but nothing that appeared to hurt either athlete. Advertisement Bahamondes changed course to start the second round by shooting for an early takedown that was shut down by Fiziev. Bahamondes tried to push Fiziev into the cage but it was largely ineffective, but it opened up more striking opportunities when they got back to range. With a little more than a minute remaining Fiziev turned the tide and got two takedowns then landed a hard punch late that sent Bahamondes to his backside. With a chance to secure the win in the final round, Fiziev picked up his pace and started to land with more consistency. Bahamondes obliged to his desired range and more landed straight punches, his most effective blow of the fight, but Fiziev took them all well. Fiziev closed the fight strong with a final takedown and some ferocious punches on the mat. After getting his hand raised for the first time since July 2022, Fiziev expressed his desire to climb back up toward the top of the lightweight rankings. "I'm happy to represent my homeland here," Fiziev said through an interpreter in his post-fight interview with Michael Bisping. "I don't know (who is next). I'm a rocket man. You can send me to the moon." Up-to-the-minute UFC on ABC 8 results: This article originally appeared on MMA Junkie: UFC Baku results: Rafael Fiziev snaps skid vs. Ignacio Bahamondes

Mateusz Gamrot calls out 'God of Comfort Zone' Benoit Saint Denis for UFC Paris showdown
Mateusz Gamrot calls out 'God of Comfort Zone' Benoit Saint Denis for UFC Paris showdown Mateusz Gamrot shoots his shot following his win at Saturday's UFC on ESPN 68. Show Caption Hide Caption Mateusz Gamrot calls for top lightweights after halting Ludovit Klein UFC on ESPN 68 winner Mateusz Gamrot talks to MMA Junkie and other reporters post-fight after his unanimous decision victory over Ludovit Klein. LAS VEGAS – Mateusz Gamrot not only wants to beat Benoit Saint Denis, but he also wants him to change his fighter nickname. Following a dominant win over Ludovit Klein at Saturday's UFC on ESPN 68, Gamrot (25-3 MMA, 8-3 UFC) called out the Frenchman, and he did so by taking a shot at his "God of War" nickname. Gamrot, who had been searching for a fight for months prior to the Klein booking, claims he was offered to be Saint Denis' replacement opponent for UFC 315 earlier in May, but Saint Denis turned him down and ended up fighting and submitting Kyle Prepolec. The move didn't sit well with Gamrot, and now he wants to fight him in the UFC's expected show in Paris in September. "I can change Benoit Saint Denis' nickname," Gamrot told reporters at the UFC on ESPN 68 post-fight press conference. "He has the nickname 'God of War,' but I can change his nickname to 'God of Comfort Zone' because bro, he got offered to fight with me one week before, and many times he called me out. So he gets opportunity and he says no. Bro, what the f*ck? 'God of Comfort Zone.'" Gamrot fought an unranked opponent in Klein this past Saturday, something that's relatively unusual for someone who's just outside the top five of the UFC official lightweight rankings. The Polish fighter admits being frustrated at the difficulty he's faced lately in getting the bigger names in the division. "When I came to Florida, I always asked to give me the fight, but this moment everybody was booked in the ranking, so I had two options: Wait a few months later and get someone from ranking or take someone without ranking and be active," Gamrot said. "So the choice for me was clear: I want to fight. Of course, this was a big risk, but like I said before, If you be live in yourself and your skills, you can fight with everybody. I did this, I took this fight. It was a big risk, but I won tonight, so I'm so happy: double check."

Fight Night ends with Erin Blanchfield-Maycee Barber cancellation
June 1 - UFC Fight Night was supposed to end with a women's flyweight fight between top-five contenders Erin Blanchfield and Maycee Barber. Instead, the fight was canceled as both were set to enter the Octagon at the UFC APEX in Las Vegas on Saturday night. Instead of cutting to Barber's dressing room, the broadcast cut to play-by-play commentator Brendan Fitzgerald revealing that Barber (14-2 MMA, 9-2 UFC) was "not medically cleared to compete." Barber missed weight Friday, weighing in at 126.5 pounds, while Blanchfield (13-2 MMA, 7-1 UFC) fulfilled her obligations. Blanchfield revealed she would not grant Barber a rebooking, saying she would "talk to her manager" to see what contenders are available. "(Barber) needs to look at another division," Blanchfield said at a press conference after the cancellation. "She needs to fix her life. She needs to fix herself. I think she's a mess in every aspect of her entire life." The card finished with nine fights, five on the main card at UFC Vegas 107. In the co-headliner, Mateusz Gamrot won a unanimous decision over Ludovit Klein 30-27-30-27, 30-27. Gamrot (25-3 MMA, 8-3 UFC) has won four of his last five fights, sending Klein (23-5-1 MMA, 7-3-1 UFC) to his first loss since October 2021. Ramiz Brahimaj pulled off a critical upset at welterweight over Billy Ray Goff with a guillotine choke at 3:16 in Round 1. Brahimaj has finished all 12 of his wins, 11 of them by submission. Brahimaj (12-5 MMA, 4-3 UFC) has won two of his last three, while Goff (9-4 MMA, 1-2 UFC) has lost two straight. Dustin Jacoby, 37, demonstrated that he still has power in his hands, making quick work against Bruno Lopes by securing a first-round TKO at 1:50. A Jacoby jab set up the finish before a flurry of punches, as he has now won back-to-back fights. Jacoby (21-9-1 MMA, 9-6-1 UFC) made it clear he is anything but a "stepping stone," and would eventually love to run back his October 2022 split-decision loss to former UFC light heavyweight title challenger Khalil Rountree Jr. (13-6 MMA, 9-6, 1 NC UFC) down the line. Lopes (14-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC) returns to the drawing board, suffering his first loss since September 2023. The second fight saw Ketlen Vieira use her ground control to beat Macy Chiasson by unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 30-27) at women's featherweight. Vieira (15-4 MMA, 9-4 UFC) halted a possible skid as she's now won four of her last six. Meanwhile, Chiasson (11-4 MMA, 8-4 UFC) has split her last four fights as a two-fight winning streak was snapped. In the main card opener, Zachary Reese beat Dusko Todorovic in middleweight action, taking the cards 29-28, 29-28, 29-28. Reese (9-2 MMA, 3-2 UFC) has won three of his last five, while Todorovic (12-6 MMA, 3-6 UFC) has lost three in a row and four out of his last five. --Field Level Media
