Porsche Takes Aim At WEC Manufacturer's Championship
Read the full story on Backfire News With the 2025 FIA World Endurance Championship season about to start, Porsche says it's aiming for the manufacturer's championship as well as defending its driver's title from last season. That might rile competitors and fans of other teams, but we like to see a little swagger in motorsports. Time will tell if Porsche has what it takes or if the factory team will fall short of the lofty will be competing in the Hypercar class using the 963. Danish driver Michael Christensen and two French drivers - Mathieu Jaminet and Julien Andlauer - will be sharing the No.5 Porsche Penske Motorsport car. As for the No. 6 car, it will be driven by reigning world champions Kévin Estre and Laurens Vanthoor, plus Australian Matt Campbell. As we've recently covered, Ferrari aims to be number one in the WEC Hypercar class, so expect to see the Germans and Italians butt heads as the season progresses. We love seeing teams rise to the challenge of a worthy competitor. For the LMGT3 category, two Porsche 911 GT3 Rs will be fielded. One is from the factory team with car No. 85 driven by Rahel Frey from Switzerland, Célia Martin of France, and Michelle Gatting from Denmark. Customer team Manthey, which is the defending champion, is fielding the No. 92 piloted by American Ryan Hardwick and Italian Riccardo Pera 'The Porsche 963 is meant to continue the legacy of legendary endurance racing prototypes like the 917, 935, 956, 962 and 919 Hybrid,' said Thomas Laudenbach, Vice President Porsche Motorsport. 'These icons from Weissach have shaped endurance racing for years. We intend to achieve the same with our current hybrid prototype." The first race in the 2025 FIA WEC season will be held February 28 at the Lusail International Circuit in Qatar. Porsche will be competing in the top Hypercar class and so will a customer team, Proton Competition. Last season, the two teams swept the same race, so we'll see if a repeat performance is in the cards. Images via Porsche

Rolex 24, Hour 21: Porsches trade lead through pit stops
The No. 7 Porsche Penske Motorsport 963 has just pitted from the lead, meaning that the sister No.6 Porsche is scored as the GTP leader with three hours left in the Rolex 24 At Daytona. Porsche's Mathieu Jaminet re-took the advantage over BMW M Team RLL's No. 24 car and has stayed in front. Philipp Eng is currently second in the No. 24 BMW, and Colin Braun is third in the No. 60 Meyer Shank Racing Acura ARX-06. They owe pit stops soon and that would cycle the No. 7 Porsche, now driven by Nick Tandy, back to the overall lead barring a disaster. And, from now on, GTP teams can no longer use their allotment of soft tires. There's been a big swing in the LMP2 lead battle after the No. 99 AO Racing ORECA 07 picked up a drive-through penalty for not meeting tire operational requirements. IMSA detected the minimum tire pressures of the No. 99 were not compliant and asked Dane Cameron to come through pit lane. That's given the advantage to AF Corse and Nicklas Nielsen. The blue No. 88 ORECA leads the orange No. 8 Tower Motorsports machine of Job van Uitert. Cameron has dropped back to third ahead of Paul di Resta in the No. 22 United Autosports USA car. A well-executed up-and-under move from Tommy Milner at turn six has put the No. 4 Pratt Miller Motorsports Corvette Z06 GT3.R in the lead of GTD PRO, getting past the No.1 Paul Miller Racing BMW M4 GT3 EVO of Connor De Phillippi who's now second. The top two in GTD PRO have built a significant gap to the third-placed No. 65 Ford Multimatic Mustang GT3 of Chris Mies, who's just passed the No. 69 GetSpeed Mercedes-AMG GT3 of Luca Stolz. We have two more GTD retirements to report – the No. 12 Vasser Sullivan Racing Lexus RC F GT3, and the No. 023 Triarsi Competizione Ferrari 296 GT3, are both out. However, the No. 78 Forte Racing Lamborghini has returned to the race. Marvin Kirchhöfer's masterful job in the No. 13 AWA Corvette has kept him in the lead in GTD, though Elliott Skeer (No. 120 Wright Motorsports Porsche) and Philip Ellis (No. 57 Winward Racing Mercedes-AMG) are not far off in second and third. Mattia Drudi is also in podium contention in the No. 27 Heart of Racing Team Aston Martin, down in fourth. HOUR 21 STANDINGS Story originally appeared on Racer

Rolex 24, Hour 15: Porsche and BMW battle over podium places, Dalziel takes Era to the top in LMP2
The race got underway again 10 minutes into the hour after the FCY called for the Inter Europol ORECA stopping and it was another frantic restart with Mathieu Jaminet leading the train across the line in the No. 6 Penske Porsche. BMW Team RLL's Raffaele Marciello immediately got on the gas and powered past Tom Blomqvist for second. The Swiss driver's time that high up the order wouldn't last though as the Briton fought back to reclaim the place a lap later. Marciello then fell back and Laurens Vanthoor in the sister No. 7 Porsche snuck by for third. The lead battle then came alive halfway through the hour, with Blomqvist utilising the traffic to his advantage in catching Jaminet. It was close on the banking multiple times between the two, but Jaminet successfully defended the place, allowing Vanthoor to catch up. The Belgian then put in a spirited effort and made a daring move stick around the outside into Turn 1 to make it a 1-2 for Porsche again. Meanwhile, in LMP2, it was all change up front when the green flags waved. Ryan Dalziel was on a mission for Era Motorsport and caught Malthe Jakobsen's Crowdstrike ORECA napping up the inside at Turn 1. Sebastien Bourdais in the No. 8 Tower example later followed in Dalziel's footsteps, also finding a way by the Dane, then past the Scotsman for the lead. There was a change at the top of the timing screens too in GTD, as Stevan McAleer went backwards in the No. 021 Triarsi 296 GT3. Casper Stevenson then briefly led for Heart of Racing before being tapped into a spin by Tom Sargent in the No. 120 Wright Porsche. Sargent then pitted to hand over the car to Adam Adelson. AWA's Marvin Kirchhöfer inherited the lead as a pit cycle began at the turn of the hour. Behind, Winward Racing's No. 57 Mercedes, which fell seven laps down after a throttle issue way back in the third hour, is now lurking. The AMG GT3 is back on the lead lap and now, remarkably, second with Philip Ellis. Don't count out the defending champions! Daniel Morad in the No. 32 Korthoff Competition Mercedes sits third. In GTD PRO AO Racing's 'Rexy' Porsche and the No. 4 Pratt Miller Corvette held station for the entire 60 minutes in first and second, but there was movement behind. Fabien Schiller and Connor De Phillippi made progress, climbing to third and fourth for GetSpeed and Paul Miller respectively. At Gradient Racing, work is ongoing on its Mustang GT3 after a long-standing clutch problem. The team has had to take the car behind the wall for attention. Two cars were confirmed as retirements during the hour due to mechanical woes, the first being the Inception Ferrari, the second the Inter Europol ORECA. We count 13 retirements now with nine hours to go. HOUR 15 STANDINGS Story originally appeared on Racer
