Dodgers regain NL West lead from Padres as Snell shuts down his former team in 6-0 win

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Blake Snell limited his former team to five hits in six innings, and the Los Angeles Dodgers regained the NL West lead with a 6-0 victory over the San Diego Padres on Saturday night. The Dodgers drew six walks over the first two innings against Padres right-hander Dylan Cease, when they scored five runs on just one hit. Teoscar Hernandez hit his 20th homer of the season in the fifth inning. Michael Conforto had a two-run single in the first inning for Los Angeles (70-53), which pulled even with San Diego (69-54) by winning the opener Friday. The Padres had taken sole possession of first place in the division Wednesday. Snell (3-1) was making his first start against the Padres after leaving the club following the 2023 season, when he won the NL Cy Young Award. He walked two and struck out three. Cease (5-11) gave up two hits but walked six in 3 1/3 innings. He allowed five runs — three earned. The first three Dodgers batters of the game – Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts and Will Smith – all walked and scored in the first inning. Ohtani and Smith also walked in the second and scored when Padres center fielder Jackson Merrill dropped Freddie Freeman's flyball at the warning track in right-center field. Key stat San Diego made three of its first four outs of the game on stolen-base attempts, as Smith threw out Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado and Xander Bogaerts at second base in the first two innings. Up next Padres RHP Yu Darvish (2-3, 5.61 ERA) and Dodgers RHP Tyler Glasnow (1-1, 3.08) will face off Sunday afternoon in the finale of the three-game series. ___

Singer works 6 shutout innings, Steer drives in 3 runs as the Reds end Phillies' 4-game win streak

CINCINNATI (AP) — Brady Singer pitched six shutout innings, Spencer Steer drove in three runs and the Cincinnati Reds beat NL East-leading Philadelphia 6-1 Tuesday night, halting the Phillies' four-game win streak. Singer (10-9) gave up three of the Phillies' four hits, struck out six and didn't walk a batter. The 29-year-old right-hander faced the minimum of 17 batters over the first 5 2/3 innings with the only hit allowed being a single by Nick Castellanos, whose grounder deflected off the glove of shortstop Elly De La Cruz. Castellanos was erased on a double play in the fifth. Steer hit a two-run double in the third and Miguel Andujar added a solo homer for a 3-0 lead in the fourth. Andujar's eighth homer was his second since being traded to the Reds on July 31. Steer added a sacrifice fly and Jose Trevino had a two-run single in the sixth before the game was halted for 28 minutes by rain at the start of the seventh inning. Bryce Harper spoiled the Reds' shutout bid with a two-out homer, his 18th, off Sam Moll during a downpour in the ninth inning. Ranger Suárez (8-6) gave up a season-high 10 hits and six runs over 5 1/3 innings. He struck out three and walked two. Key moment Rafael Marchán singled and Trea Turner doubled him to third with two outs in the sixth. Kyle Schwarber, who came in tied with the Dodgers Shohei Ohtani for the NL home run lead with 42, grounded out to end the threat. The Reds had 10 hits and their six runs were the second-most the team has scored in August. They've scored 39 runs in 11 August games, 20 coming in two contests. Up next Phillies LHP Cristopher Sánchez (11-3, 2.36) pitches against Reds RHP Hunter Greene (4-3, 2.72) on Wednesday. ___

DL Hall also did a great job from the bullpen on Sunday, relieving Quinn Priester for 3 2/3 scoreless innings to keep the Brewers in the game as the offense made the comeback. Top Hitting Performance of the Week Isaac Collins. Don't think I need to say much more, but I will anyway. In six games this week, the reigning NL Rookie of the Month led the team in nearly every statistical category, including 10 hits, two homers, two doubles, a triple, eight RBIs, and six runs scored. He hit .476/.577/.952, adding a steal as well. Oh, and he hit a walkoff homer Sunday afternoon to push the win streak to nine. Injury Notes & Roster Moves Shelby Miller, who was acquired from the D-backs at the trade deadline, made a quick one-outing rehab assignment at Triple-A Nashville before being activated this week, making his MLB debut over the weekend against the Mets. RHP Easton McGee was optioned to Triple-A Nashville, opening up a spot for the return of Miller. RHP Logan Henderson was put on the IL on Friday ahead of his scheduled start Saturday with right elbow inflammation. His current return is TBD, but an MRI did bring good news, showing that his UCL is intact. Best-case scenario is that Henderson would resume throwing in mid-August. RHP Tobias Myers took his place in the rotation after being recalled from Nashville. The Brewers made a couple of minor moves this week, acquiring RHP Austin Roberts from the Marlins for cash considerations. The team also signed free agent LHP Raúl Alcantara and RHP Travis MacGregor to minor league contracts over the weekend. All three have been assigned to Double-A Biloxi.
