After Beyoncé's Mom Was Criticized For The Way She Treated Her 7-Year-Old Granddaughter, Rumi, On Stage, She's Explained What Was Actually Going On
Earlier this month, a video emerged from Beyoncé's Cowboy Carter tour, where she was joined on stage by her mom, Tina Knowles, and daughters, Blue Ivy and Rumi. In the footage, Bey publicly congratulates Tina on her new book, Matriarch: A Memoir. She tells the crowd: "Today is a big day because my mother, who worked so hard on her book, she has the number one book on the New York Times bestseller list. Everybody, please say: 'Congratulations, Mama T!'' However, fans were more distracted by 7-year-old Rumi, who is clearly incredibly overexcited to be there. The little girl is clapping her hands and jumping up and down throughout the video, and at one point in the clip, she goes over to her mom and seemingly tries to reach for the microphone. Tina can be seen pulling Rumi back, and looks as though she sternly says something to her. Afterward, when it's time for Tina and the girls to leave the stage, Tina can be seen guiding Rumi to the side and hugging Blue before taking her hand and walking both girls off. The video divided people at the time, with some arguing that Tina was too hard on her young granddaughter. One person commented: 'I really don't like how mama T is treating her grandchild😞' 'I don't like the grandmother's reaction to Rumiì🥺,' somebody else echoed, while another popular comment read: '🤣 Tina ain't no sweet grandma she strict 🤣 she like girl stay put 🤣' Others compared Tina's reaction to Blue's, with one person writing: 'Blue has more patience with Rumi than her grandmother has.' Another said: 'I'm so disappointed with Tina's lack of patience and empathy towards Rumi, s/o to Blue Ivy for having a patience, understanding and soft towards her younger sister.' Tina then recalled what exactly was going through her mind during the incident, explaining: 'It was just that she was reaching for the mic because she wanted to say something, and I realized that, and she was pulling, and I was like, 'Oh God, that's all that needs to happen, is the mic hits her in the face.'' Anticipating what the tabloid response to that would be, Tina joked that the headlines would say 'Beyoncé hit her in the face.' Despite the online response, Tina said that it was 'so special' to join her daughter and granddaughters on stage, saying: "It was from a different perspective — I'm usually behind the stage — but it was actually fun. It was exciting." She also revealed Rumi's reaction to being on stage with thousands of people cheering her on, telling Gayle that the little girl had said it 'feels powerful.' 'I thought it was serious,' she continued. 'I saw the teleprompter [start] typing, 'We need something.' The hell do y'all mean? They went in for no reason.' As Palmer diffused the situation with her jokes, Knowles continued trying to get her dress to stay up with some assist from the event staff. 'Glad that's over,' Palmer remarked when she was alone on stage with Tina again, adding: 'They was gonna give me a heart attack. Whew! So back to the book.' Knowles is on tour promoting her memoir which tells her life story from when she was a girl through her rise as a business owner. The book also talks about how she guided her daughters as well as Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams of Destiny's Child to 'global commercial success,' the synopsis adds. Her tour kicked off in Washington, D.C. on April 30 with Michelle Obama. She next goes to Houston where Kelly Rowland, 44, acts as her moderator before she heads to London to finish her tour. Beyoncé's mother Tina recently fought back the tears as she recounted her 'devastating' breast cancer battle and divorce on an episode of Loose Women last month - and admitted 'I only feel whole now I'm 71.' Tina was recently diagnosed with Stage 1 breast cancer after doctors discovered two tumors during a mammogram appointment. She appeared on the ITV chat show to talk to Charlene White, 44, and Jane Moore, 62, about her new book Matriarch. Her recent diagnosis was touched upon after Charlene was keen to find out if she had a group of close pals that she could turn to in a time of need. Tina said: 'Friendship with women is of the utmost importance to me, it's one of my biggest priorities to stay connected because when I went through that, I depended on my daughters. 'I didn't tell everybody in my friends group. I didn't have to tell them what was going on. 'I just went to Houston, gathered my girlfriends, we went to church, we went to lunch, we went parting at the club, dancing.' As her emotions got the better of her and her eyes started to tell up, she continued: 'I just told them I don't want to talk about what's going on, but I need you right now. 'They were all right there with been a big part of my life, my whole life.' Speaking about the support from her famous daughters, Tina added: 'With this one, they were the first people I told. 'They were the only people I told for a while and they rallied around me, they always have at those very difficult times. 'When I went through divorce, the first time I was devastated, and my girls were right there to lift me up and tell me that I can do things, and make me laugh because you know at those times, you need laughter too and they are my rock really.' Tina shares her daughters with ex-husband Mathew Knowles.
