Detroit Tigers' Matt Vierling re-injures right shoulder; Wenceel Pérez activated
Matt Vierling is still injured. The Detroit Tigers placed Vierling, an outfielder/third baseman who recently returned from a right shoulder injury, on the injured list Tuesday, May 27, with right shoulder inflammation. The 28-year-old had been active for just four days between stints on the injured list, playing in four games. Advertisement There wasn't an event that caused Vierling's right shoulder to become an issue again. "We put him on the injured list, which should tell you we don't think he can play," manager A.J. Hinch said before Tuesday's game against the San Francisco Giants at Comerica Park. "We'll have more information as we get more tests, and more doctors need to weigh in." The 25-year-old suffered the lower back injury in late March during the final Grapefruit League game in spring training. "We should not steal any joy away from getting Wenceel back," Hinch said. "This guy is so fun to be around. He's energetic, big smile, bounces around the clubhouse." Detroit Tigers outfielder Wenceel Pérez poses for a photo during picture day of spring training at TigerTown in Lakeland, Fla. on Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2025. Meanwhile, Vierling had been sidelined since Feb. 23 — the second game of spring training — with a strained rotator cuff muscle in his right shoulder. He spent three months recovering and rehabbing before the Tigers activated him Friday, May 23, against the Cleveland Guardians at Comerica Park. Advertisement Four days later, Vierling landed on the injured list again. It's the same shoulder. "There wasn't a singular event or an episode or anything," Hinch said. "He came in and complained of some shoulder soreness. We sent him for tests. He saw some doctors. We're going to need to get further testing, but we can't mess with this coming off the most recent shoulder issue that he's had." This story will be updated. More Tigers Bad News as Outfield 'Upgrade' Back on IL Just 4 Days After Return
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Detroit Tigers have been the feel-good story of the MLB season, rising from a sub-.500 team less that a year ago, to a playoff team that went to Game 5 of the American League Division Series, then to the best record in the AL after Memorial Day this season. But even as the Tigers are making their fans feel good, a long list of their players have been feeling bad. Detroit has been beset with injuries since spring training, and the team is still waiting on the return of at least eight players — including $15 million offseason free agent pitching acquisition Alex Cobb. DETROIT, MICHIGAN - SEPTEMBER 27: Matt Vierling #8 of the Detroit Tigers looks on against the Chicago White Sox at Comerica Park on September 27, 2024 in Detroit, outfield has been hit especially hard by the injury buzzsaw. Until last Friday, Parker Meadows, Wenceel Pérez and Matt Vierling all had yet to play a single game, after combining for 168 appearances in center field alone last season. The Tigers got what manager A.J. Hinch called a "big upgrade" to the outfield on Friday, however, when Vierling — who has been dealing with a strained rotator cuff muscle — was finally activated from the injured list. More MLB: MLB's Best Team Gets 'Big Upgrade'; Tigers Outfielder Activated For Season Debut The bad news for Detroit is, on Tuesday Vierling went right back on the IL. The reason, according to a report by The Detroit News, was that after Monday's game at home against the San Francisco Giants, the 28-year-old, five-year veteran reported a recurrence of the soreness in his right shoulder. "There wasn't a singular event or episode or anything. He came in after the game and reported some shoulder soreness so we sent him for tests, had him see some doctors," Hinch said, as quoted by The Detroit News. "We need to get further testing but we can't mess with this, especially off the recent shoulder issue he had." Vierling, who recorded two hits in the 11 at-bats since his return, was placed on the 10-day IL. But there was no word from the Tigers on how long he was expected to be shelved this time. The day was not without good news for the Tigers, however. Pérez — who was called "a fun, impactful player" by Hinch — was activated after appearing in just six rehab games in the minor leagues. The 24-year-old native of the Dominican Republic brings a high degree of versatility to the Tigers' lineup. He is a switch hitter, and according to Hinch, he will see time at all three outfield positions. More MLB: Tigers Get Good News on Veteran Bullpen Arm, But Option Rookie With 1.42 ERA

Tigers Pérez homers in 1st at-bat in return to action after being sidelined with back inflammation
DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Tigers outfielder Wenceel Pérez homered in his first at-bat of the season Tuesday night, shortly after coming off the injured list. Pérez, who had missed the entire season due to inflammation in his lower back, hit a solo homer in the second inning off San Francisco's Logan Webb. Pérez was recalled from a rehab assignment with Triple-A Toledo when utilityman Matt Vierling went on the injured list with shoulder problems. Pérez hit .242 with nine homers and nine stolen bases as a rookie in 112 games last season. He hit .250 in six postseason games. Vierling played four games after missing the first six weeks of the season with a shoulder injury before aggravating it on Monday. He was hitting .182 with two RBIs. ___ AP MLB:

Matt Vierling comeback raises eyebrows as AJ Hinch defends struggling Tigers strategy (Image Source: Getty Images) Coming off a hard 7-0 defeat to the Cleveland Guardians, the Detroit Tigers are looking toward a crucial game that will allow them to switch the tide of their season. The team is looking to recover in a hurry, and their fate is being boosted by the return of outfielder Matt Vierling. Manager AJ Hinch, who is recognized for his level-headed and astute strategy, also has some strategic adjustments lined up. With divisional foes in front of them, this time feels significant for the Tigers and their fans. Matt Vierling's return brings new hope to lineup Matt Vierling is returning, and his return couldn't have come at a better time. The Tigers have been missing his speed, batting ability, and energy. He is 28 years old and has both experience and energy to offer to the team. His return from injury is likely to provide Detroit's lineup with an enhanced edge. People are looking forward to him taking to the field again and are optimistic that his return can ignite the offense, which couldn't score a run in the first game. Vierling can do so many things well; he's a spark plug on the bases, a solid player in the outfield, and a force in clutch situations. The Tigers can use all of that at this time. His return may also relieve some of the pressure from some of the young players who are still finding their ways. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 2025 Top Trending local enterprise accounting software [Click Here] Esseps Learn More Undo It's obvious Vierling is ready to contribute, and his teammates know how much he means to them. Hinch Sends Out A Strong Message To MLB Teams AJ Hinch looks to steady a ship with smart moves Manager AJ Hinch has not been a stranger to bad starts. He recognizes that a single game does not determine a season. Nevertheless, he is aware that in a division like the AL Central, where victories are crucial at all times, it is vital to make a comeback as fast as possible. AJ Hinch is probably busy developing a new game plan that involves alterations in the batting order, improved pitching choices, and maybe a more aggressive brand of baseball. His calm demeanor keeps the players on track. Hinch believes in his roster, and having a critical player like Vierling back creates more options. The next game will be a challenge to Hinch's leadership in getting the team back on course. He doesn't panic, and that's what the Tigers currently need level thinking and intelligent strategy. If Detroit can bounce back, it could bring additional confidence and tougher outcomes in the future. MLB's Best Team Gets 'Big Upgrade'; Tigers Outfielder Activated For Season Debut
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. One of the biggest surprises of this season has been the fact that the best team in baseball so far is the Detroit Tigers. Not only did they head into Friday's home game against the Cleveland Guardians at 33-18 -- an MLB-best .647 winning percentage -- the Tigers reached the top of ESPN's power rankings released on Thursday. Detroit started the season at No. 18 in the ESPN rankings, but has vaulted up the chart, winning 15 of its last 21 games. HOUSTON, TEXAS - OCTOBER 02: Matt Vierling #8 of the Detroit Tigers reacts after striking out against the Houston Astros in the first inning during Game Two of the Wild Card Series at Minute Maid Park on October 02, 2024 in Houston, Texas. More"Plenty is going right for the Tigers: the resurgence of Javier Baez ... in center field; Tarik Skubal's sterling defense of his AL Cy Young Award; former No. 1 picks Spencer Torkelson and Casey Mize finding their way; and the bullpen's dominance," wrote the ESPN power rankings staff. "Lost in those headlines is Gleyber Torres having a solid season, continuing where he left off down the stretch in 2024 with the Yankees." And yet, the Tigers have done it all while dealing with a series of injuries that would slow down many teams. Their $15 million free agent pitching acquisition Alex Cobb has yet to take the mound. Centerfielder Parker Meadows has also been out since spring training. Torres missed almost two weeks with an oblique strain. Those names are just a few of the Tigers' walking wounded. But one outfielder (who doubles as a third baseman), Matt Vierling, is finally ready to take his place in the Detroit lineup. After missing the entire season so far with a right rotator cuff strain, the 28-year-old, fifth-year player was finally activated from the injured list on Friday. More MLB: Tigers Trade Idea Gets $3 Million Phillies Outfielder For 1.00 ERA Relief Arm Vierling played an important role in last season's Tigers comeback, getting into the playoffs despite being two games under .500 as late as Aug. 22. With 16 home runs and a .735 OPS, Vierling's 3.0 WAR was second-highest of any position player on last year's Detroit team. Other than 32-year-old veteran Javy Baez, who has converted to a center fielder due to the multiple outfield injuries and has so far produced his best performance at the plate since 2021, the Detroit outfield has been a patchwork product. Vierling and Meadows have missed time with injuries, and Manuel Margot and Wenceel Perez have served IL stints as well. Despite being eligible to play, Vierling was not in the Tigers' starting lineup on Friday. More MLB: Braves Urged to 'Pull Plug' on Yankees Castoff Alex Verdugo as Numbers Plummet
