Tigers Pérez homers in 1st at-bat in return to action after being sidelined with back inflammation
DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Tigers outfielder Wenceel Pérez homered in his first at-bat of the season Tuesday night, shortly after coming off the injured list.
Pérez, who had missed the entire season due to inflammation in his lower back, hit a solo homer in the second inning off San Francisco's Logan Webb.
Pérez was recalled from a rehab assignment with Triple-A Toledo when utilityman Matt Vierling went on the injured list with shoulder problems.
Pérez hit .242 with nine homers and nine stolen bases as a rookie in 112 games last season. He hit .250 in six postseason games.
Vierling played four games after missing the first six weeks of the season with a shoulder injury before aggravating it on Monday. He was hitting .182 with two RBIs.

According to the press release, Bill Drilling was presented the award on June 5 at the Iowa Pharmacy Association (IPA) award banquet in Des Moines. The award recognizes pharmacists across the country who demonstrate civic leadership and commitment to the well-being and overall health of their communities. For 40 years, Drilling has run Drilling Pharmacy in Sioux City with his brother Don. I've always believed that pharmacy is about more than medicine–it's about people.' This award is regarded as 'one of the most prestigious awards in the pharmacy profession' on the IPA website. It is also stated on the website that 'the award is part of a national awards program co-sponsored by the National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations (NASPA) and the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) to recognize outstanding community service, with one recipient chosen from each state every year.' This isn't the first time Drilling has received an award from the IPA. Drilling received the Robert G. Gibbs Distinguished Pharmacist Award in 2023. According to the IPA's website, this award goes to 'an Iowa pharmacist for outstanding contributions to the pharmacy profession and the Iowa Pharmacy Association.' In a statement shared via the family's New York-based church, Tim's brother-in-law, Heinrich Arnold, thanked community members for their 'outpouring of prayers and support" after the "heartbreaking tragedy." Explaining that Tim, a father of six, and Esther's deaths have been "difficult to fully grasp," he continued, "Both were taken from us far too soon, and we are all left asking: 'Why?' " "One comfort to the family is knowing that Tim and Esther were doing something they both were passionate about: being near to God, surrounded by expansive views and visions, immersed in nature, in the raw and wild beauty of creation," added Arnold. The relative also said: "The last few days have been filled with endless hours of heartache and prayer as we prayed for God's protection and his comfort in this loss." Joe Keiderling, Tim's brother, told NBC News that his sibling was "utterly unique." The pair both worked for the medical supply company Rifton Equipment. "Many young men and women remember him as an elementary school teacher who could hold them spellbound with wildly imaginative stories and escapades in the woods and fields of the Hudson Valley he called home," Joe continued. Of Esther, Joe said his niece was quiet but "deeply sensitive," telling NBC News, "She loved reading and writing, with a particular fondness for the poets Gerard Manley Hopkins and Edna St. Vincent Millay." Tim, 58, and Esther, 28, both of Ulster Park, N.Y., were last seen on Sunday, June 1, at around 10:15 a.m. local time. They had set out from the Abol Campground to hike Mount Katahdin, according to a statement from the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. Days later, on Tuesday, June 3, authorities updated the statement, writing that a Maine Warden Service K9 search team found Tim's body near the summit of the mountain, but his daughter remained missing. The organization updated the statement again the following day on Wednesday, June 4, announcing that searchers had found Esther's body. Sovereignty wins the 157th running of the Belmont Stakes
Kentucky Derby winner Sovereignty galloped to victory in muddy conditions at the 157th Belmont Stakes in Saratoga Springs, New York, on Saturday in the third leg of the Triple Crown. Sovereignty, who entered the race with 2-to-1 odds, defeated a field of seven challengers. Journalism finished in second place. The race marked a kind of replay of the Derby, in which Sovereignty finished in first and Journalism was the runner-up. Journalism had entered as the heavy favorite after winning the Preakness. The New York Racing Association temporarily relocated it there while Belmont Park on Long Island undergoes nearly half-a-billion dollars in renovations.
