The Drake pub in Bransholme, Hull reopens following renovation

The Drake pub in Bransholme, Hull has reopened following a renovation. The revamp of the pub, located on Bodmin Road, cost almost £300,000 ($407,016). It is part of Proper Pubs, a division of Admiral Taverns that focuses on community-oriented, wet-led [drinks-focused] pubs across the UK. Proper Pubs operations director Matthew Gurney stated: 'We are delighted to welcome Mike to The Drake and that opening night was such a success! 'His knowledge and passion for the local community, combined with having spent so much time in the area when he was growing up, make him a fantastic, valuable addition to the pub. 'On behalf of myself and the Proper Pubs team, we wish Mike all the best with his future plans.' The interior now features new furniture, flooring and fixtures, including multiple flat-screen televisions. The layout has been enhanced with an updated main bar area and two additional bars: one in the lounge equipped with a karaoke machine, and another in the sports room that features a new pool table and darts area. On the outside, the Drake has received new lighting and signage. The venue also offers a large, wheelchair-accessible beer garden that can seat at least 60 guests, Operator Mike Lincoln said: 'I'm delighted to have taken over the Drake and it's great to see the fantastic results of the refurbishment. "The pub looks amazing, and the opening night was a huge success with lots of great feedback and satisfied customers. 'I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Proper Pubs for all the support the team has provided throughout this exciting journey, and I look forward to what the future holds for this terrific community pub.' BBC One making British Sign Language and spoken English thriller

A new thriller is set to arrive on BBC One – marking a significant moment as a bilingual production in both British Sign Language and spoken English. 'Reunion', which has been described as 'an emotional thriller of revenge and redemption', is led by Matthew Gurney, 52, Rose Ayling-Ellis, 29, and Anne-Marie Duff, 53. The series follows Daniel Brennan, played by Gurney, 'a deaf man determined to right his wrongs while unravelling the truth behind the events that led him to prison'. Speaking about his role, Matthew said: 'My character is on a wildly different journey than that portrayed by normal deaf lives,' adding that the series portrays 'a man who is hated within the deaf community'. In an interview with Rose praised the actor's leading role in the four-part series. 'I think what is really exciting for me is seeing Matthew Gurney playing a lead role,' she said. Rose added: 'And I think people's misconception of thinking, well, how's he going to express his emotion without actually verbally stating it, whereas now you can see he has so much emotion and so much depth. 'And I think he's going to blow a lot of people's minds by showing how human he is and how much emotion (he has.)' Matthew echoed her remarks, stating the series would highlight 'how deaf people react and act on screen in an honest and authentic way'. He added: 'We are different to hearing actors, we are so much more visual storytellers, it's not about relying on sound – it's about using your eyes and seeing what is going on in the story.' Rose, who won 'Strictly Come Dancing' in 2021 and previously starred in 'EastEnders', reflected on the sense of community within the deaf acting world. She said: 'We have such a sense of community that we all know each other, it's still like that. 'It's funny, in the script, everyone knows who Brennan is and that he's coming back, and in the deaf community everyone's talking about it, everyone's gossiping, it's kind of the same thing with deaf actors as well. 'They were talking about the audition, and we already heard about 'Reunion' before it was announced because the deaf community was talking about it.'

BBC unveils first look at new epic revenge thriller Reunion

The BBC has released first-look pictures for the brand-new four-part thriller Reunion, starring Matthew Gurney, Lara Peake, Anne-Marie Duff, Eddie Marsan and Rose Ayling-Ellis. Produced by Sheffield based Warp Films for BBC iPlayer and BBC One, Reunion is a bilingual series filmed in and around Sheffield featuring both British Sign Language (BSL) and spoken English. Layered with emotion, the first-look pictures set against the striking landscape of Sheffield and the Peak District offer a glimpse of the lead cast in their roles. The selection showcases the powerful drama and use of BSL throughout the series. Written by Sheffield-born deaf writer William Mager, Reunion is an emotional thriller of revenge and redemption following the journey of Daniel Brennan, played by Matthew Gurney (Name Me Lawand, Theatre Ad Infinium), a deaf man determined to right his wrongs while unravelling the truth behind the events that led him to prison. Brennan embodies the struggle of a man caught between two worlds, unable to fully integrate into the hearing world and shunned by his closest friends and the wider deaf community following his heinous crime. Amidst this isolation, Brennan's only meaningful relationship is with his estranged daughter Carly, played by Lara Peake (How to Have Sex, Rivals), who he has not had any contact with since his arrest over a decade ago. Anne-Marie Duff (Bad Sisters, The Salisbury Poisonings) stars as Christine, desperate to find Brennan and get to the full truth behind what he did, alongside Eddie Marsan as Stephen Renworth (Back to Black, Ray Donovan), Christine's protective boyfriend, while Rose Ayling-Ellis (Summer of Rockets, As You like It) plays her daughter, Miri. Matthew Gurney said: 'Reunion is an amazing storyline and is completely different from my previous work. My character Brennan is on a wildly different journey than that portrayed by normal deaf lives, this portrays a man who is hated within the deaf community. It shows how deaf people react and act on screen in an honest and authentic way. We are different to hearing actors, we are so much more visual storytellers, it's not about relying on sound it's about using your eyes and seeing what is going on in the story'. Lara Peake said: 'There's so much in Reunion that people can relate to from the relationships and storyline to what it feels like to be isolated from a community and welcomed into a community. To be able to watch a show that is led by deaf actors is incredible and the inclusion of sign language is not seen often enough. It's a real opportunity to learn and become fascinated and immersed in that world'. Reunion (4x60) is created and written by William Mager. The series is directed by Luke Snellin (One Day, Wanderlust) who also acts as executive producer, with Helen Ostler (The Last Kingdom, Crime) as producer, and Siobhan Morgan (Waterloo Road, Hollyoaks) as associate producer. Mark Herbert (Four Lions, The Virtues, This is England) and Gwen Gorst (Unforgotten, A Discovery of Witches) are executive producers for Warp Films, alongside series writer William Mager, with Rebecca Ferguson and Jo McClellan for the BBC. Reunion is supported by Screen Yorkshire and BBC Studios will distribute the series internationally. Reunion is coming soon to BBC iPlayer and BBC One. GK
