BBC One making British Sign Language and spoken English thriller

Yahoo03-04-2025
A new thriller is set to arrive on BBC One – marking a significant moment as a bilingual production in both British Sign Language and spoken English.
'Reunion', which has been described as 'an emotional thriller of revenge and redemption', is led by Matthew Gurney, 52, Rose Ayling-Ellis, 29, and Anne-Marie Duff, 53.
The series follows Daniel Brennan, played by Gurney, 'a deaf man determined to right his wrongs while unravelling the truth behind the events that led him to prison'.
Speaking about his role, Matthew said: 'My character is on a wildly different journey than that portrayed by normal deaf lives,' adding that the series portrays 'a man who is hated within the deaf community'.
In an interview with RadioTimes.com, Rose praised the actor's leading role in the four-part series.
'I think what is really exciting for me is seeing Matthew Gurney playing a lead role,' she said.
Rose added: 'And I think people's misconception of thinking, well, how's he going to express his emotion without actually verbally stating it, whereas now you can see he has so much emotion and so much depth.
'And I think he's going to blow a lot of people's minds by showing how human he is and how much emotion (he has.)'
Matthew echoed her remarks, stating the series would highlight 'how deaf people react and act on screen in an honest and authentic way'.
He added: 'We are different to hearing actors, we are so much more visual storytellers, it's not about relying on sound – it's about using your eyes and seeing what is going on in the story.'
Rose, who won 'Strictly Come Dancing' in 2021 and previously starred in 'EastEnders', reflected on the sense of community within the deaf acting world.
She said: 'We have such a sense of community that we all know each other, it's still like that.
'It's funny, in the script, everyone knows who Brennan is and that he's coming back, and in the deaf community everyone's talking about it, everyone's gossiping, it's kind of the same thing with deaf actors as well.
'They were talking about the audition, and we already heard about 'Reunion' before it was announced because the deaf community was talking about it.'

Kumail Nanjiani describes meeting Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg — and why Musk 'didn't like' his show 'Silicon Valley'

" Silicon Valley" followed a crew of lame, socially awkward tech bros. The real Valley leaders weren't impressed. Kumail Nanjiani, an actor from the hit 2010s HBO show, said that he met both Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg. On Mike Birbiglia's "Working it Out" podcast, Nanjiani said that neither tech mogul was quite pleased with him. Nanjiani said that Musk "didn't like the show" — and specifically its first scene. At the start of "Silicon Valley," Kid Rock performs a rock set with electric guitars and strobe lights. After setting off sparklers, the camera cuts to the audience, revealing a scattered crowd of nerdy tech guys not paying attention. "Elon was upset," Nanjiani said. "He was like, 'Well, the parties I go to are much cooler than these parties.'" Musk is known to party. In 2023, he attended a meeting with France's then-Prime Minister Emannuel Macron unshaven. Hours earlier, he was spotted on the dance floor of a luxury resort in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Nanjiani shared his response to Musk's criticism: "You're one of the richest people in the world. We're losers on the show. Of course, your parties are better than my parties. What are you talking about?" The "Silicon Valley" actor said he met Mark Zuckerberg briefly backstage at an awards ceremony — and the Meta CEO was also unimpressed. Nanjiani described an awards show for scientists, where he and his costar Martin Starr presented during the peak of "Silicon Valley." The duo changed their onstage dialogue to replicate a particularly graphic comedy bit from the end of "Silicon Valley" season one. "[It was] for scientists who many of them don't speak English," Nanjiani said. "Almost none of them knew who we were or what the fuck we were talking about." The crowd was silent for the entire five minutes of the bit, Nanjiani said. He said that after leaving the stage, Zuckerberg approached him. "He came up and he was like, 'What the fuck was that?'" Nanjiani said. "Truly, in that moment, he was right." Nanjiani was more accepting of the Meta CEO's coolness. "I don't blame Zuckerberg for not liking us," he said.

Strictly Come Dancing replacement announced as NI actor Kristian Nairn pulls out

The replacement has been announced for Strictly Come Dancing after an actor and DJ from Northern Ireland pulled out for "medical reasons." Less than a week ago, Kristian Nairn was announced as the final celebrity to join the upcoming series of the hit BBC show when it returns next month. I've always been a fan of the show and cannot wait to get started!' In a statement issued on Thursday afternoon, a spokesperson for BBC Strictly Come Dancing said: "Due to medical reasons, actor and DJ Kristian Nairn has sadly withdrawn from the upcoming series of Strictly Come Dancing." Sharing his own statement, Kristian said: "With a heavy heart, I have to step back from this season of Strictly Come Dancing due to unexpected medical reasons. I was truly looking forward to the journey, and I'm deeply sorry to disappoint anyone who was looking forward to seeing me on the dance floor. "Thank you all for your support, and I will be back on my feet very soon, in every sense. Love to all, Kristian." Lewis was nominated for the Rising Star Award at the 2023 National Television Awards for the role. Away from the Dales, Lewis' other television work includes roles in Vera, Miss Sidhu Investigates, and Hetty Feather and he previously worked with David Beckham on an advertising campaign. On stage, Lewis has played the lead role of Leonard Vole in the Olivier-nominated Agatha Christie's Witness for the Prosecution, has toured the UK in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and, at the age of 11, he made his stage debut playing Michael in the West End smash Billy Elliot: The Musical. Strictly's full cast of celebrity contestants for its upcoming series will include the likes of Love Island winner Dani Dyer-Bowen, former Apprentice star Tom Skinner and former Chelsea footballer Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink. Famous Books Main Characters Quiz — BuzzFeed Quizzes

Hey, fellow readers — welcome to class. Today, we're diving into the topic of protagonists. And yes, I know you probably remember this from English class — but just in case it's been a minute (it definitely has for me), here's a quick refresher: A protagonist is basically the main character of a story. It's the person the plot revolves around. Sometimes it gets a little tricky, like when the protagonist isn't the narrator. For example, in The Great Gatsby, Nick Carraway is telling the story, but the book centers around Jay Gatsby's life. That makes Jay Gatsby the protagonist. So, to make it simple, who is the story about? Who would you call the main character? The character that comes to mind is usually the protagonist. So, speaking of well do you actually know the books 'everyone' has read (or at least watched the movie version of)? Here's how this works: I'll give you the name of a main character, and you'll try to match them to their famous book. Sound good? Let's do this. How'd you do? Drop your score in the comments! And since we're talking about books 'everyone's read,' tell me: What's your hidden gem? That one book that you're distraught that not everyone has read? For me, it's The Paper Palace by Miranda Cowley Heller. The poetic prose of this novel is breathtaking, and although it's a drama, it had me on the edge of my seat like a thriller. I've gifted it to almost everyone I know. I'm obsessed. So…what's your Paper Palace book? Tell me in the comments. I also can never shut up about Sylvia Plath.
