Jumpy NYC crook steals car, but returns it when he finds 9-year-old inside: sources
A crook with a snake tattoo on his neck showed his sentimental side when he stole a minivan in Harlem — then returned it when he found a terrified 9-year-old girl in the back seat, cops and sources said. A 56-year-old man had just unloaded his younger daughter, 7, from his gray Honda Odyssey at East 107th Street and Third Avenue in East Harlem around 2:30 a.m. Sunday when the creep hopped behind the wheel and drove off, according to authorities and police sources. The frantic dad flagged down NYPD cops on the street, who launched their search for the thief, police said. But while cops were canvassing the area, the suspect – apparently realizing the older girl was still in the car – whipped back around the block and returned the minivan to the same location, cops and sources said. The tattooed thief allegedly stole a minivan with a 9-year-old girl still inside at at East 107th Street and Third Avenue early Sunday, cops and sources said. The boy's 32-year-old mom stepped into a deli on Sutter Avenue near Van Sinderen Avenue when 34-year-old Maurice Stephens got behind the wheel and drove off with the toddler, police said. The tot was saved within 10 minutes when cops pulled over the joyrider about a mile away, authorities said. Last Thanksgiving, Mohamed Sakho, 22, allegedly swiped a car with a 7-year-old boy inside in the Country Club section of the Bronx, cops said. The boy was recovered safely and Sakho was arrested for the crime a day later when cops picked him up for an unrelated robbery, authorities said.

The 32-year-old mom called 911 and told cops she left her Nissan Pathfinder running with the toddler in the backseat as she stepped into a deli on Sutter Avenue near Van Sinderen Avenue in Brownsville, police said. While she was in the store, 34-year-old Maurice Stephens got behind the wheel and drove off with the toddler, said cops. The alleged carjacker drove for nearly a mile when officers spotted him at Wyona Street and Liberty Avenue and pulled him over around 10:50 a.m., authorities said. The boy was recovered safely and Stephens – who has no relation to the family – was placed in cuffs, authorities said. Stephens, of Brooklyn Heights, was charged with fourth-degree grand larceny, second-degree kidnapping, criminal possession of stolen property and endangering the welfare of a child, cops said. He has one prior arrest, for criminal possession of a controlled substance from January in Midtown Manhattan, authorities said.

Man arrested after stealing car in Brooklyn with toddler, 2, inside: NYPD
A man who stole a car that was left idling with a 2-year-old toddler in the backseat Friday drove almost a mile away in Brooklyn before police nabbed him and reunited the boy with his panicked mother. Cops received a 911 call from the terrified 32-year-old mom around 10:41 a.m. after she realized her car, which she had left running in front of a deli on Sutter Ave. in East New York with her young son inside, had been stolen, police said. About 10 minutes later, police spotted the vehicle — a 2008 Nissan Pathfinder— near Liberty Ave. and Wyona St. Police arrested Maurice Stephens, 34, in connection with the crime. Stephens, who has one prior bust for drug possession, was charged with endangering the welfare of a child, grand larceny and possession of stolen property. EMS took the little kid to Brookdale University Hospital for evaluation, where doctors determined he was unharmed and reunited him with his mother.
