National Weather Service predicts strong storms, days of rain ahead of mild race weekend
Strong thunderstorms are expected to hit Indianapolis during the afternoon and evening of May 20. The possibility of a tornado "cannot be ruled out," according to the National Weather Service. Rain showers will be constant through the afternoon. Isolated storms are possible before then, but forecasters don't expect widespread storms until about 4 p.m. High winds are the most pressing threat. Winds within storms could reach up to 50 mph, and gusts throughout the day will be more moderate, about 20 to 25 mph. Flooding and hail are also possible. Storms will end around 2 a.m. on May 21. Rain will continue to fall all day May 21 and May 22, but storms aren't predicted. Forecasters are keeping an especially close eye on the flooding risk because of the steady rain, according to NWS meteorologist Earl Breon. Drivers should be mindful of flooding risk along their commutes. "It's not uncommon for one place to get lighter amounts of precipitation and a place next door to experience flash flooding in a situation like this," Breon said. The sun will come back out on May 23. Severe storms could bring tornadoes, egg-sized hail on May 16. Here's the latest forecast
The National Weather Service has "good confidence" that strong storms will move into Indiana at around 5 p.m. on May 16. Tornadoes are possible, with winds between 60 and 80 mph. Hail about 2 inches wide — roughly the size of an egg — is also possible. The strongest weather will hit between 5-11 p.m. Severe storm risk is highest in southern Indiana, including Bloomington, Terre Haute and Evansville. Storms will follow an otherwise bright and sunny May 16. Indianapolis' temperatures could peak as high as 88 degrees. Skies will be clear during the day, but storm clouds will rapidly form in the late afternoon and early evening. That's because the high temperatures will weaken the layer of air that usually prevents severe storms. "It's kind of like if you shake up a Coke bottle," NWS meteorologist Aaron Updike said. "It's all fine if you keep the cap on, but as you start to warm near the surface, it starts to take the cap off." It's important to have multiple ways to receive severe weather warnings, especially if you're outside enjoying the summery day. Temperatures will drop to around 60 degrees during the storms, ushering in an otherwise mild weekend. May 17 will be 71 degrees and sunny, and May 18 will be 76 degrees and sunny. Rain, hail, thunder and heat: what weather to expect in Indianapolis for the rest of the week
Indianapolis can expect rain for the rest of the week, according to the National Weather Service. The wet weather won't dampen the temperatures brought in by a heat wave expected to push temperatures into the high 80s over the next few days. While forecasters aren't ruling out the chance of severe storms on May 14, they aren't likely, according to NWS meteorologist Earl Breon. Rainfall amounts throughout the Indianapolis area will vary, with some zip codes receiving only a sprinkling while others will see as much as an inch of rainfall. A flood warning has been issued through 11:30 a.m. May 14 for "creeks, streams, low-lying spots on roads and construction zones, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations is imminent or occurring" for Marion, Johnson and Hamilton counties. May 15 will begin partly sunny, and temperatures will spike as high as 88 degrees. But be careful with enjoying the outdoors — there's a slight chance of severe storms beginning at around 3 p.m., and the risk increases at around 9 p.m. "The ones that do become severe have potential to produce large hail, strong winds - things of that nature," Breon said. Storms will continue overnight into the early morning hours, tapering off between 1-2 a.m. on May 16. The NWS doesn't currently predict tornadoes, but that could change as more information becomes available, according to Breon. The chance of severe weather will continue on May 16, though storms may stay south of Indianapolis. Hail will remain a possibility, but high winds will be a stronger concern. May 16 will see temperatures around 87 degrees. The days of heavy rainfall will bring "a ramped-up threat of potential isolated flooding," especially beginning on May 16. And while there's a chance of rain continuing through the weekend, May 15 and May 16 remain the primary severe weather threats. Breon said people should prepare for the hazards presented both by storms and by severe heat.
