Over 8,000 join Kuching's Mayor's Walk in celebration of unity and wellness

Wee (second right) joins Dr Sim (right) in flagging off the participants at MBKS Boulevard in Kuching today. – pHoot by Roystein Emmor KUCHING (Aug 17): The annual Mayor's Walk once again brought the community together in a vibrant show of unity and camaraderie, with more than 8,000 participants joining Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng and Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian this morning at the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Boulevard. Flagged off by Dr Sim himself, the three-kilometre walk was filled with smiles, laughter, and the energy of families, friends, and individuals walking side by side — embodying the true spirit of Kuching. In his speech, Wee said the Mayor's Walk is not just about walking or fitness — it is about building community. 'Just look around you: so many happy faces, families and friends walking together. Since 2017, this walk has been our way of saying: let's get moving, let's stay healthy, and let's grow stronger together.' Wee emphasised that the event symbolises the unity of the city, where everyone, regardless of age or background, is part of one big family. 'When we walk side by side, we are showing what Kuching really is — one big family. Young or old, big or small, everyone belongs here. And that is the MBKS spirit: No one is left behind.' He added that the walk is about more than steps taken. 'Today, don't just count the steps — count the smiles, the friendships, and the memories we are creating together. Every step we take is building a healthier, happier, and more united Kuching. So let's keep walking, keep smiling, and keep building our city of community and care.' Adding to the joyful atmosphere, the organising committee also surprised Dr Sim with a birthday cake to mark his 60th birthday — a celebration warmly shared by the crowd. Side activities organised with the walk were a zumba exercise and a lucky draw. The Mayor's Walk has grown into a much-anticipated tradition since its inception, carrying forward its mission of promoting fitness, friendship, and community spirit at the heart of Kuching.
