Last month, Malaysian police arrested 36 Bangladeshi nationals in a sweeping crackdown on a network accused of spreading Islamic State (IS) ideology and soliciting funds from migrant workers. Inspector-General of Police Mohd Khalid Ismail said the arrests were made during coordinated operations carried out since April. All the suspects had entered Malaysia legally for employment. Md Mamun Ali, 31, was charged with providing support to the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group through Facebook, using an account under the name of 'Sahifulla Islam', between July 28, 2023 and April 30, 2024. The charge, under Section 130J(1)(a) of the Penal Code, provides for a life sentence or imprisonment of up to 30 years, and the possibility of a fine, upon conviction. Meanwhile, Refat Bishat, 27, was charged with possessing a picture of the IS terrorist group flag on an Honor X6a mobile phone at about 4.30pm on July 10, 2025, at a house in Larkin Industrial Estate. The charge, under Section 130JB(1)(a) of the Penal Code, provides for imprisonment of up to seven years or a fine, and the forfeiture of the goods involved, upon conviction. The men were charged before judge Ahmad Kamal Arifin Ismail, who set Sept 12 for mention for the appointment of an interpreter. Deputy public prosecutors Maryam Jamielah Ab Manaff and Nur Ainaa Ridzwan appeared for the prosecution in the respective cases. The men meanwhile were unrepresented.

The charge under Section 130J(1)(a) of the Penal Code carries a potential life sentence or up to 30 years in prison, along with a possible fine. Refat Bishat, 27, faced charges for possessing an image of the IS flag on his mobile phone at a Larkin Industrial Estate residence on July 10, 2025. His charge under Section 130JB(1)(a) could result in up to seven years' imprisonment, a fine, and forfeiture of the device. Judge Datuk Ahmad Kamal Arifin Ismail scheduled the next mention for September 12 to appoint an interpreter. The factory operators said they only "understood a little". The prosecution then requested that the case be postponed to another date to allow a Bangladeshi interpreter to be present for the charges to be read again. According to the charge sheet, Mamun was accused of knowingly supporting a terrorist group via Facebook under the name Sahifulla Islam between July 28, 2023, and April 30, 2024. He was charged under Section 130J(1)(a) of the Penal Code, which provides for a punishment of life imprisonment or a maximum of 40 years, or a fine, and forfeiture of any property used, if convicted. Refat, meanwhile, was charged with possessing a picture of the IS flag on a phone at a house in Jalan Datin Halimah, Larkin Industrial Estate, on July 10. He was charged under Section 130JB(1)(a) of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum prison sentence of seven years or a fine and forfeiture of the materials, if convicted. Deputy public prosecutors Maryam Jamielah Ab Manaff and Nur Ainaa Ridzwan prosecuted, while both men were unrepresented. The court set Sep 12 for mention to appoint a Bangladeshi interpreter.
