Two Bangladeshi men charged with terrorism offences in Johor Bahru
Md Mamun Ali, 31, was accused of supporting the Islamic State (IS) group via Facebook under the account name Sahifulla Islam between July 2023 and April 2024.
The charge under Section 130J(1)(a) of the Penal Code carries a potential life sentence or up to 30 years in prison, along with a possible fine.
Refat Bishat, 27, faced charges for possessing an image of the IS flag on his mobile phone at a Larkin Industrial Estate residence on July 10, 2025.
His charge under Section 130JB(1)(a) could result in up to seven years' imprisonment, a fine, and forfeiture of the device.
Judge Datuk Ahmad Kamal Arifin Ismail scheduled the next mention for September 12 to appoint an interpreter.
Deputy public prosecutors Maryam Jamielah Ab Manaff and Nur Ainaa Ridzwan represented the prosecution.
Neither accused had legal representation during the proceedings. - Bernama

Pensioner claims trial to raping 9-year-old grand-niece
BUTTERWORTH: A widower pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court here yesterday to a charge of raping his grand-niece between 2022 and 2023. The 67-year-old pensioner claimed trial after the charge was read out before Judge Nor Azah Kasran. According to the charge, the father of four is accused of raping a girl who was nine years old at the time. The offence was allegedly committed at a house in Permatang Kerai Besar, Kepala Batas, here, between 2022 and 2023. He was charged under Section 376(1) of the Penal Code, which provides for a jail term of at least 10 years and not more than 30 years, as well as whipping, if convicted. Deputy public prosecutor Muhammad Rifaie Mohamed Riyaludin handled the prosecution, while the accused was represented by Yazid Khairul Azman and Ismat Arif Abu Hassan. Muhammad Rifaie did not offer bail, citing the man's relationship with the victim as her grand-uncle and the close proximity of their residences, which could pose a risk of him disturbing the victim. However, the lawyers requested that the accused be granted bail because he has health issues and requires regular hospital treatment. The court granted the accused bail of RM12,000 with one surety. He must also report to a police station every month and is forbidden from disturbing the victim and prosecution witnesses until the case is concluded. The court set Sept 24 for mention of the case.

Police: TikTok account probed for unverified content on Zara Qairina case

Photo credit: AFP KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 16): Police are investigating a TikTok account suspected of posting inaccurate and unverified content about the death of Form One student Zara Qairina Mahathir, which has caused concern in the community. Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk M. Kumar said the investigation is being conducted under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948, Section 505(b) of the Penal Code, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. 'It involves the offence of improper use of network facilities and services, as well as content that has the potential to incite hatred against any party and cause public anxiety or fear,' he said. 'The spread of unverified content could affect the efficiency and smooth conduct of the police investigation,' he said in a statement today. Kumar also urged the public to refrain from sharing unverified information, warning that it can cause confusion within the community. Umno Youth chief faces sedition and threat probes after Kepala Batas assembly
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 16 — Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh completed giving his statement at the Dang Wangi District Police Headquarters (IPD) here at 1.25am today over the assembly in Kepala Batas, Penang last Thursday. Muhamad Akmal's lawyer, Aizat Azam, said the Merlimau assemblyman had extended good cooperation and answered all of the approximately 80 questions posed by the investigating officer. 'He (Muhamad Akmal) was investigated under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948, Section 506 of the Penal Code, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998,' he told reporters when met in front of the IPD today. Meanwhile, Muhamad Akmal said he would give full cooperation to the police in the investigation into the case. He arrived at the Dang Wangi IPD at 11pm yesterday to have his statement recorded.
