Suspect wanted in connection with Algiers shooting in custody following Terrytown standoff

TERRYTOWN, La. (WGNO) — A team of U.S. Marshals took a suspect who was wanted in connection with a shooting that left a 9-year-old girl wounded in Algiers into custody. On Monday, May 12, New Orleans Police Department officers responded to a shooting in the 2900 block of Lawrence Street, where they found a 9-year-old girl who had been shot. She was taken to a hospital and was last reported to be in critical condition. NOPD officials said an investigation determined that the shooting happened in the 1600 block of Elizardi Boulevard. Man killed in Central City New Orleans shooting According to the NOPD, the child was hit by a stray bullet during a shootout in the neighborhood. NOPD officials said the child and her mother were able to get inside their apartment when the shooting started, but a bullet flew through the window, hitting the child. During the investigation, NOPD detectives said they identified 19-year-old Evans Rogers as a suspect in the case and obtained a warrant for his arrest on charges of attempted second-degree murder and illegal use of weapons. On Tuesday, May 13, U.S. Marshals told WGNO that they arrived at a Terrytown hotel around 12 p.m. and attempted to negotiate Rogers out of a second-floor room. WGNO reporters at the scene say Marshals used a bullhorn several times, telling him that they have a search warrant and he needs to exit the room. 'We tried to negotiate them for several hours, negotiate with the people in the room some of the family members of the other person in the room responded also pleaded with the people in the room, and we finally had to break a window and at that point they finally surrendered about two or three minutes later. I'm extremely happy it ended peacefully. We try to resolve every situation like this with a peaceful surrender,' said Deputy U.S. Marshal Brian Fair. NOPD officials said the second person was detained. Additional information was not provided. New report flags unusually high acquittal rates in Orleans Parish judge trials

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — A new report from the Metropolitan Crime Commission is raising questions about how justice is being served in the Orleans Parish Criminal District Court, specifically when judges, not juries, decide the verdict. According to the report, judges Nandi Campbell and Leon Roche not only presided over more judge only trials than any other judges in the parish, they also issued not-guilty verdicts at dramatically higher rates. Slidell man arrested following house search, drug bust From 2021 to 2023, 123 bench trials were held in the court. Campbell and Roche handled more than half, 51% of them. Judge Campbell acquitted defendants in 79 percent of her judge trials. In violent felony cases, that number climbed to 91%. That's 21 acquittals out of 23 trials. Judge Roche, in his first full year on the bench, acquitted defendants in 88 percent of his judge trials. Judge Roche, who began serving a full term in 2023, acquitted defendants in 88% of his judge trials in his first full year on the bench. 'These cases indicate that there is a strategic advantage for defendants to waive a jury before these two judges,' said Rafael Goyeneche, president of the Metropolitan Crime Commission. 'And these two judges should not be outliers to this extent.' Suspect wanted in connection with Algiers shooting in custody following Terrytown standoff For comparison, Orleans Parish juries returned not guilty verdicts just 43% of the time during the same period. Louisiana law currently gives only defendants the right to waive a jury trial, a power not shared by prosecutors. That's something the MCC wants to change. The group is proposing a legal amendment that would require both the prosecution and defense to agree to a bench trial, mirroring the approach in federal court and 31 other states. 'Most judges have two or three judge trials a year. That's a busy year for most of the court,' Goyeneche said. 'These judges are doing 15-plus judge trials per year, and their acquittal rates are well outside the norms of juries and the other 10 judges of the court.' While the MCC isn't accusing judges Campbell or Roche of wrongdoing, the report suggests their high acquittal rates may be symptomatic of a larger issue in the judicial system, one that may warrant further oversight or Stuprich could shatter several Southeastern records in Southland Tournament opener Calloway calls UNO baseball 'probably the most dangerous' No. 8 seed ever in Southland Tournament Shreveport's Stage Center brings 'Mean Girls Jr.' to the stage Golf legend's private jet makes emergency landing at LAX Sheinbaum questions why US allowed in 17 relatives of 'El Chapo' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. New Orleans man takes 2 million steps in 30 days

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — A New Orleans man set an unofficial world record in the International Book of Records for walking more than 2 million steps in a month. 'Last month in April I set the world record for the most steps in a single month,' Kwame Terra said. Terra is known as 'The Big Stepper' because in 30 days he took over two million steps, setting an unofficial world record for the International Book of Records. 'So I did 2,007,178 steps in 30 days over 900 miles of walking in 30 days. I walked all over the city about 35 miles per day,' he said. New Orleans teacher in the running to be 'America's Favorite Teacher' He accomplished this incredible feat to raise awareness for maximizing health especially in the black community. That's why he took his 2-millionth step on Bayou Road in New Orleans, a street lined with black-owned businesses. 'I just wanted to be intentional where I walked,' he said. Terra averaged about 66-thousand steps per day and he hopes his story inspires others enough to help him raise $2 million for two million steps to help launch his app called, 'bEHR Health.' 'Sometimes we need to do something we've never done to become something that we've never been,' Terra said. Do you want to run on the 50-yard line in the Superdome like a Saints player? He went on to say, 'Walking gave me a boost of self-esteem for sure. Just to know that I can accomplish something like that.' He doesn't recommend others take as many steps as he did in a month. 'I would say 5 to 10 thousand steps per day is plenty for your overall health,' he said. 97-year-old New Orleans grandma stays fit working out every day What's next for Kwame? He said that he's working on setting another world record in the fall, and this time, he plans on getting other walkers involved.
