Memorial Medical Center names Mercy Award winner
EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Memorial Medical Center (MMC) has named its 2025 Mercy Award Winner, according to the hospital on Tuesday, May 6, in Las Cruces. Traci White, Memorial Medical Center's clinical pharmacy specialist in oncology and palliative care, was announced as the 2025 Mercy Award winner. 'To say our hospital, Cancer Center and community are blessed to have Traci is an understatement. Her heart is truly one in a million,' said Dennis Knox, CEO of Memorial Medical Center. 'We are incredibly proud of Traci, we are thrilled to bestow this honor on her, and we know she will represent MMC extremely well at the national level of this award process.' The Mercy Award is a Lifepoint Health (parent company) award that highlights one employee from each facility nationwide who 'profoundly touches the lives of others and best represents the spirit and values on which the company was founded. The award is considered the highest honor a Lifepoint employee can receive,' according to the news release by MMC. According to Memorial Medical Center, White was one of only seven pharmacists nationwide to be double-Board certified in oncology and geriatric pharmacy. Before working at MMC, White was working at a local hospital agency and began working at Memorial Medical Center in 2019. White also started the Palliative Care Program at the hospital, where she recognized a 'great need in our community and region to improve the care for serious and/or terminal illness,' MMC said. According to MMC, White has served as the Chair of the Las Cruces Palliative Care Coalition since 2022, the Community Advisory Board for the New Mexico State University Cancer Outreach Core and is a regional leader for the Network for Collaborative Oncology Development and Advancement. In addition, White has also served on the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists Advisory Group on pain management and palliative care and the development committee for the Society of Pain and Palliative Care Pharmacists, MMC said. While juggling board position, White also serves at the University of New Mexico and New Mexico State University for the colleges of pharmacy and pharmacy residents, MMC said. Each Lifepoint Health facility winner, including White, will be considered for Lifepoint's 2025 company-wide Mercy Award. The winner will be announced this summer and honored during a ceremony in Nashville in August, according to MMC. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Measles reported for the first time in Doña Ana County
(Courtesy of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) New Mexico health officials reported five new measles cases in children Tuesday, including the first reported infection in Southern New Mexico's most populous county: Doña Ana, which may have exposed people in a preschool and several Memorial Medical Center locations. The remaining four cases were in Lea County, where the majority of the outbreak has spread in New Mexico, bringing the measles total to 63 cases. Five of those cases were serious enough to warrant hospitalization. The New Mexico Department of Health officials recommended Tuesday that parents seek one dose of the measles, mumps rubella vaccine for infants aged 6-11 months living in Doña Ana County, or who will be traveling to either Doña Ana or Lea counties. 'Given how contagious measles is, we expected it to find its way from El Paso County in Texas to neighboring Doña Ana County,' said NMDOH Chief Medical Officer Dr. Miranda Durham in a written statement. 'No matter where you live in New Mexico, make sure you and your family are up to date with your vaccinations.' Health officials said measles exposure may have occurred in the past two weeks at the following dates and locations: April 2: noon to 6 p.m. at Kid's Kountry Place Preschool and Childcare, 3704 Elk's Drive April 3 and April 7: 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Memorial Medical Center Family Medicine Center, 2605 Terrace Drive April 6: 1 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. at Memorial Medical Center Emergency Department, 2450 S. Telshor Blvd. April 7: 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Memorial Medical Center Family Medicine Center, 2605 Terrace Drive April 8: 7:45 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Memorial Medical Center Emergency Department and Pediatric unit, 2450 S. Telshor Blvd. NMDOH requests that anyone exposed or showing symptoms call the measles Helpline at 1-833-796-8773 for help in English or Spanish for vaccine questions or further measles testing. They urged patients to contact doctor's offices or emergency rooms before coming in to allow them to prepare for a potential measles case. Measles is one of the most contagious diseases in the world, spread through contact with airborne droplets from infected people. People can spread the measles days before symptoms show, which include fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes and a red spotty rash starting on the head and face and spreading over the body. The most effective prevention against the measles is two doses of the vaccine, according to health officials. New Mexico's vaccination rate has more than doubled between Feb. 1 and April 14, with 18,449 vaccinations this year over the 9,863 in the same time period in 2024. In addition to the 10 walk-in vaccine clinics in eight counties posted to the website, NMDOH announced two additional locations in Las Cruces: Walk-in vaccine hours are from 1 to 3 p.m. Mondays from 1 to 3 p.m. and 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday mornings at the Las Cruces Public Health Office, 1170 N. Solano Drive. (575) 528-5001. From 10 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesdays at Las Cruces East Mesa Public Health Office, 5220 Holman Road. (575) 382-0540. In other parts of the state, cases remain unchanged at two infections reported in Eddy County and one infection in Chaves County. Nearly 60% of New Mexico's measles cases have impacted children, with 17 cases reported in very young children; 19 cases in children ages 7 to 17-years old; and 27 cases in adults. Texas Health officials reported 20 additional cases Tuesday, totaling 561 cases in 23 counties. The majority of cases remain in Gaines County, which has one of the lowest childhood vaccination rates in Texas. The U.S. has more than twice the number of measles cases reported in 2024. Three reported measles deaths have occurred during the outbreak: two Texas children, and one Lea County adult, which is still under investigation, according to a spokesperson for the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator. Shooting at New Mexico park kills least 3 dead, injures 14; no arrests have yet been made
At least three people were killed and 14 others were injured in a shooting at a park in the desert city of Las Cruces, New Mexico, police said Saturday. Police on Saturday asked for bystanders to share videos and other tips as they continued to seek a suspect or suspects in the shooting, which occurred at about 10 p.m. local time on Friday in the city's Young Park, a music and recreation venue. The deceased are two 19-year-old men and a 16-year-old boy, according to the Las Cruces Police Department. Names of the dead and those who were injured have not yet been released. Those injured ranged in age from 16 to 36 years, police said. Gunshot victims were sent to all three local hospitals, as well as to the University Medical Center of El Paso, the regional trauma center, according to police and hospital officials. Six patients arrived at Memorial Medical Center in Las Cruces by ambulance and private car, said marketing and communications director Andrew Cummins and five of those have been transported to El Paso. In a post to Instagram on Saturday, Las Cruces City Councilor and Mayor Pro Tem Johana Bencomo put numbers to the tragedy. "Part of me wanted to write that this is something you never really think this is going to happen in your city, but that actually feels deeply untrue," she wrote. "Honestly now days a tragedy like this feels like a nightmare just waiting to come true at any possible moment, yet also always praying and hoping it never will." Las Cruces sits on the edge of the Chihuahuan Desert along the Rio Grande River in southern New Mexico, about 41 miles north of the U.S.-Mexican border. The Las Cruces Police Department said police and fire personnel who arrived at the park in response to reports of gunfire are being assisted in their investigation by New Mexico State Police, the Dona Ana County Sheriff's Office, the FBI and agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Young Park and all roadways leading to the park are temporarily closed as the investigation continues.
