Menfi stresses importance of African Union's role in supporting national reconciliation in Libya
The head of the Presidential Council, Mohammed Menfi, emphasized the priority of the African Union's role in supporting Libya's comprehensive national reconciliation process. He highlighted the need to hold general elections, unify state institutions, end foreign interference, and ensure the withdrawal of all foreign forces and mercenaries, praising the African Union's supportive stances toward Libya in international forums. This came during his speech at the African Union's mid-year coordination meeting in Malabo, where he called for strengthening African solidarity in the face of the continent's economic and geopolitical challenges. In his address, Menfi stressed the urgency of accelerating the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area. He called for greater attention to be given to infrastructure projects connecting African countries, such as roads and energy pipelines, and for supporting local manufacturing of raw materials to create added value. Menfi also addressed the crises affecting several African nations, underscoring the need to establish effective African mediation mechanisms, build internal crisis management capacities, and unify African positions on reforming global financial institutions and the United Nations Security Council. Libya, Egypt reaffirm cooperation during AU summit
BY Libyan Express Jul 14, 2025 - 04:38 Menfi, El-Sisi in Malabo talks on African unity and North African security The Head of Libya's Presidential Council, Mohamed Menfi, met on Sunday with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi on the sidelines of the 7th biannual coordination summit between the African Union and regional economic communities, held in Malabo, the capital of Equatorial Guinea. The two leaders discussed ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation between Libya and Egypt in a manner that serves the interests of both nations, according to a statement issued by the Presidential Council's media office. The talks also touched on regional and international developments, particularly those affecting North Africa and the broader African continent. The Egyptian presidency said the meeting reflected a shared commitment to boosting economic and security collaboration and supporting peace-building and development across Africa. El-Sisi and Menfi reportedly exchanged views on enhancing continental integration and advancing joint African efforts to address current challenges. Menfi also took part in the AU coordination summit in his capacity as the current chair of the Arab Maghreb Union, representing the bloc during high-level sessions attended by heads of state, senior officials, and representatives of African regional organisations. In his address to the summit, Menfi underscored the importance of the African Union's role in supporting Libya's stability and reintegration into international diplomatic frameworks. He expressed appreciation for the AU's continued backing, particularly during recent Berlin Process consultations aimed at advancing the political process in Libya. Menfi calls from Seville for international support to rebuild Libya
The Head of the Presidential Council, Mohammed Menfi, called on the international community to support efforts for political stability in Libya, stressing the country's need for effective international partnerships to overcome its crisis and build a diversified economy. His remarks came during the opening of the 4th International Conference on Financing for Development held in Seville, Spain, on Monday, with the participation of several heads of state and representatives of international organizations, including King Felipe VI, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, and UN Secretary-General António Guterres. Menfi said that Libya is at a pivotal moment in its history, referencing the challenges the country has faced in recent years, including political, security, and economic crises, as well as the natural disaster caused by Storm Daniel, which struck the city of Derna and areas in the Green Mountain region in September 2023. Menfi also emphasized the importance of directing international funding towards projects in education, healthcare, and renewable energy. He noted that Libya possesses natural resources and a promising sovereign wealth fund but requires structural reforms to enhance transparency and accountability. Menfi concluded by reaffirming the Council's commitment to implementing effective standards in public financial management in cooperation with international partners. He expressed hope that what he described as the 'Seville Commitment' would mark a starting point for a fairer global financial system—one that supports developing countries, alleviates debt burdens, and promotes stability in Africa and worldwide.
