Major car brand makes huge change to flagship motor that will make drivers feel like they're in a SPACESHIP

The quirky feature will emulate the feeling of driving an F1 car OUT OF THIS WORLD OUT OF THIS WORLD Major car brand makes huge change to flagship motor that will make drivers feel like they're in a SPACESHIP Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A MAJOR car brand has made a huge change to its flagship motor that will make drivers feel like they're in a spaceship. A refreshed version of the Mercedes Benz EQS EV limo is set to hit the market next year - but customers may be in for a shock. 3 The new Mercedes EQS EV limo is set to launch next year Credit: Mercedes-Benz AG 3 The yoke has a semi-circular shape with controls placed on two central panels Credit: Mercedes-Benz Instead of a traditional steering wheel, the model will come complete with a futuristic "yoke" wheel. Yoke wheels are usually U or T-shaped - rather than circular. And unlike conventional steering wheels, where the driver's hands can be placed anywhere around the circumference, yokes generally have two horizontal grips - a bit like a joystick. In this way, they create a futuristic, techy feel that is also present in many F1 cars. Fans of the 1980s Knight Rider series may equally see similarities between the yoke and the steering unit in Michael Knight's talking car, KITT. Mercedes is not the first brand to introduce a yoke - with Tesla launching its own version in 2021 as part of its Model S and Model X. However, the feature drew criticism from customers for its lack of practical usability. Mercedes is determined to avoid the same mistakes - and has combined the funky shape with a host of snazzy controls for an optimal user-friendly experience. With the merest of hand movements, drivers will be able to access their audio settings, cruise control and hands-free phone operation on two panels in the middle of the wheel. Plus, the model will have what's called a "steer-by-wire" system, meaning the steering wheel and front wheels are connected electronically rather than mechanically. Mercedes reveals its new luxury EV with 'superscreen' passengers can play video games or watch Netflix on while on move The system will automatically know how much angle is required - meaning the driver is never required to fully rotate the yoke. This comes as part of the brand's transition towards self-driving cars. Markus Schäfer, chief technology officer for development and procurement, explained: "Steer-by-wire is another big step towards the mobility of tomorrow, and we're proud that we will be launching such a system in 2026. "The technology enables a unique customer experience that goes far beyond steering alone. "In combination with Level 3 conditionally automated driving, it will enable an even more immersive entertainment experience in the medium term. "That's because the flat steering wheel provides a better view of the display when streaming your favourite show, for example." It comes after the brand gave a sneak peak into its Vision V electric range, which is also set to launch in 2026. The vans will feature plush white leather seats and clear acrylic storage compartments attached to the doors. The cabinets are said to mimic display cabinets in high-end designer stores, and can be used to carry handbags or sunglasses. And, passengers can even separate themselves from the driver with a glass panel, which creates a "private lounge."

Mercedes Boss Wants EV Even Playing Field With China, But No 'Crude' Tariffs

Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Kallenius called tariffs "crude" during the launch of the Vision V concept car ... More at the Shanghai Auto Show today. Photo: Mercedes-Benz AG The CEO of Mercedes-Benz has warned the European Union that tariffs would be a "crude" way to find an equitable competition between European and Chinese EV makers. Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Kallenius told the Shanghai Auto Show that a solution had to be found that allowed European automakers to compete head-to-head with Chinese-made electric cars and SUVs, but that way should not be with tariffs. Kallenius, who also serves as the President of the European automotive industry lobby group, ACEA, called tariffs the 'crudest instrument' available to negotiators while launching the Vision V luxury van concept. 'We need to seek win wins," Kallenius said. 'A conversation about a level playing field in an open market is always legitimate, but a pure tariff barrier is the crudest instrument you can apply. "We have wished for the EU and negotiators on the Chinese side to come up with an equitable solution and from what I have read and heard, they are in discussions. "History tells us that economies exposed to the full force of competition are the most innovative. That is what we would like." The EU has already flagged its willingness to negotiate with China over its tsunami of automotive brands heading to Europe, even floating ideas like minimum pricing for Chinese EVs instead of tariffs. Kallenius also launched the Mercedes-Benz Vision V during the Shanghai Auto Show today. The largest ... More Mercedes-Benz factory in the world is in Beijing, and it makes more than 80% of its Chinese volume domesticallly. Photo: Mercedes-Benz AG. While the EU has import tariffs on vehicles of 10%, additional tariffs of 35.3% for SAIC, 18.8% for Geely (whose founder owns 9.8% of Mercedes-Benz) and 17% for BYD were introduced last year. The German auto industry and the ACEA have been fiercely opposed to the tariffs on Chinese EVs, which had the potential to rise to 45.3%, partly due to fears of reciprocity from China, where Germany's automakers sell a third of their annual production. Kallenius himself called China: 'Our most important market and crucial for our technical innovations' during his Shanghai show speech. China makes 80% of its Chinese-market cars in China, and its largest factory is in Beijing, while it also develops most of its Chinese vehicles in China. The latest innovative Mercedes-Benz aimed at Chinese production for the Chinese market is the Vision V, which is aimed at bringing Chinese customer around to the European view that vans could represent genuine luxury, as well as limousines and SUVs.

New van dubbed luxury ‘private lounge' on wheels thanks to 65-inch cinema screen, ‘karaoke mode' & leather recliners

The MPV can even transform into a gaming hub with a fully integrated controller LIVING LUX New van dubbed luxury 'private lounge' on wheels thanks to 65-inch cinema screen, 'karaoke mode' & leather recliners Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) MERCEDES has revealed the ultimate in luxury travel with a new MPV that's been likened to a 'private lounge'. The new-look V-Class concept isn't just an ordinary-looking van with extra bells and whistles – it's potentially the king of all people carriers. The new V-Class line-up promises a range of practical family vehicles that scale all the way up to 'luxurious limousines' – with the first model set to arrive in 2026. While the exterior might resemble a slightly more futuristic-looking van, Mercedes says it 'marks the next step' in their design language, with aerodynamics playing a significant role in its appearance. Autocar notes that it features a new grille, similar to that found on the EQS, as well as a tweaked headlamp design and an illuminated standing star logo. Sadly, it seems that the sleek rear light bar will likely be toned down before it enters mass production. But the best features can be found inside the four-seat cabin, which has been dubbed a 'private lounge' for the vehicle's rear passengers. These include white Nappa leather upholstery and a retractable 65-inch cinema screen, along with a 42-speaker sound system and two airline-style seats that are fully reclinable. If that isn't enough, there are seven projectors fitted to create different ambiences, while the rear windows can be switched from transparent to opaque to give passengers a 'unique cocooning effect'. For those who don't just want to relax, the MPV can transform into a gaming hub, offering, for example, racing games that can be controlled with a fully integrated controller. There's even a karaoke feature – for those who do their best singing behind the wheel. Luxury £1m motorhome with huge living space, heated floors & spa bathroom At this stage, it's hard to determine which features will carry over to the production model – although it's safe to assume the production-spec steering wheel, the three-screen Superscreen, and crystal-look air vents will be included. So too is the extensive interior space – made possible by Mercedes' platform. This follows last year's unveiling by iconic tuning company Brabus - renowned for their long-standing partnership with Mercedes - of the ultimate home on wheels. Dubbed the Big Boy 1200, the mighty motorhome comes equipped with a full kitchen, a luxury living room, and even heated flooring, all wrapped up in a staggering £1 million price tag. The 12-metre-long, 26-tonne motorhome is based on the Mercedes Actros truck and has been expertly converted by Belgian specialist STX Motorhomes. Packed with high-end features, the Big Boy 1200 offers a 30-square-metre living space – comparable in size to a small one-bedroom flat. This impressive space is made possible by four electrically powered slide-out modules, which expand the bedroom and living areas when the vehicle is stationary. 7 Some of the features seen on the concept will unlikely be found on the production model, such as the rear-light strip Credit: Mercedes-Benz AG
