McVitie's owner Pladis invests into UK operations

UK snacking giant Pladis has invested £68m ($91.6m) across its local operations. According to the Godiva chocolate brand owner, most of the investment is earmarked for its sites in the Northwest of England and is expected to help boost the growth of some of its best-known brands. At its factory in Stockport, where it manufactures McVitie's biscuits and Jaffa Cake, Pladis is investing £21m to introduce a new chocolate moulding line featuring robotic technology. Meanwhile, Liverpool's Aintree site, where Jacob's Cream Crackers are made, will benefit from a £33m overhaul, including the installation of new ovens and infrastructure. Furthermore, £2m will be used to invest in the group's savoury assortments department in Carlisle, resulting in the bakery recruiting and training 48 new colleagues. Some £12m has also been allocated to support infrastructure across its UK sites which - alongside Stockport, Liverpool and Carlisle - include facilities in Halifax, Harlesden in North London and Leicester. The business said it is also furthering its sustainability goals with the investment, as it is expected to cut 876 tonnes of carbon emissions each year across its UK operations. Founded in 2016, Pladis employs 16,000 people across 27 bakeries and factories in 11 countries, with its brands sold in more than 110 countries. This latest investment rollout is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2026. Pladis' managing director for UK and Ireland, Mete Buyurgan said the news marked 'an important milestone in renovating our sites and unlocking capacity for our growth story. 'We have a fantastic suite of much-loved brands, baked by dedicated colleagues, and we have a responsibility to continue to nurture these brands for customers and consumers across the world,' the managing director said. 'The news of these investments we are sharing today will enable us to achieve this.' The news comes during a period of sustained growth for Pladis, as its global revenue increased by 8% year-on-year to £2.8 billion, according to its most recent financial report in 2023. Earlier this year, the snacks manufacturer launched an accelerator programme aimed at supporting early-stage companies both locally and internationally. McVitie's owner invests £68 million into British factories with overhaul of two North West sites

The factory home to the Jaffa Cake and Chocolate Digestive will receive investment and job opportunities in a bid to 'supercharge' its growth. The parent company of McVitie's, Pladis, has announced a £68 million investment into its brands, with 'the bulk of the cash' earmarked for the North West. The snack giant has said funds will be used to boost productivity across its factories, with locations in the North West that produce Penguin bars, Jaffa Cakes, and Chocolate Digestives seeing most of the investment. A total of £33 million will be used to overhaul its Liverpool Aintree site, where Jacob's Crackers are baked - which had seen 361 jobs at risk of redundancy in 2023. The money will go towards the installation of new ovens and infrastructure. The McVitie's factory in Stockport will also see a £21 million investment, including the introduction of a new chocolate moulding line, creating 45 new jobs. The factory produces Jaffa Cakes and Penguin bars, and the new equipment could make 1,500 bars per minute. McVitie's Stockport factory is also home to the chocolate refinery that produces all the chocolate used to top digestive biscuits, with an estimated 1.7 billion Chocolate Digestives sold each year. Anthony Coulson, general manager of the Pladis Stockport factory, said: "Our Stockport site has a proud history and an exciting future. 80 million packets of McVitie's Chocolate Digestives are made every year, with all of the chocolate made in Greater Manchester." Mete Buyurgan, Pladis' UK and Ireland managing director, said: 'We have a fantastic suite of much-loved brands, baked by dedicated colleagues, and we have a responsibility to continue to nurture these brands for customers and consumers across the world.'

McVitie's owner is to inject £68 million into its British operations in a bid to 'supercharge' the growth of its brands. Turkish-owned snacking giant Pladis said investment funds will be used to boost manufacturing capacity and productivity across its factories. The London-based company, which also owns the Jacob's and Godiva brands, added that it has 'earmarked the bulk of the cash' to pump into sites across the north-west of England. The plans will include a £33 million overhaul of its Liverpool Aintree site, where it bakes Jacob's cream crackers. It will have a comprehensive refurbishment which will include the installation of new ovens and infrastructure. The company launched plans to reduce the size of the Aintree site in 2023, in a move which put 361 workers at risk of redundancy. On Monday, Pladis said it will also invest £21 million to introduce a new chocolate moulding line into its Stockport Jaffa Cake factory. A further £2 million will create 48 new roles across its Carlisle site, the world's oldest biscuit factory. The firm will also use £12 million to support infrastructure across its UK sites which, alongside Stockport, Liverpool and Carlisle, include facilities in Halifax, Harlesden in north London and Leicester. Mete Buyurgan, Pladis' UK and Ireland managing director, said: 'Today's announcement is an important milestone in renovating our sites and unlocking capacity for our growth story. 'We have a fantastic suite of much-loved brands, baked by dedicated colleagues, and we have a responsibility to continue to nurture these brands for customers and consumers across the world. 'The news of these investments we are sharing today will enable us to achieve this.' The investment plans are scheduled to be completed by the end of 2026, the company said.
