McVitie's owner invests £68 million into British factories with overhaul of two North West sites

ITV News14-07-2025
The factory home to the Jaffa Cake and Chocolate Digestive will receive investment and job opportunities in a bid to 'supercharge' its growth.
The parent company of McVitie's, Pladis, has announced a £68 million investment into its brands, with 'the bulk of the cash' earmarked for the North West.
The snack giant has said funds will be used to boost productivity across its factories, with locations in the North West that produce Penguin bars, Jaffa Cakes, and Chocolate Digestives seeing most of the investment.
A total of £33 million will be used to overhaul its Liverpool Aintree site, where Jacob's Crackers are baked - which had seen 361 jobs at risk of redundancy in 2023.
The money will go towards the installation of new ovens and infrastructure.
The McVitie's factory in Stockport will also see a £21 million investment, including the introduction of a new chocolate moulding line, creating 45 new jobs.
The factory produces Jaffa Cakes and Penguin bars, and the new equipment could make 1,500 bars per minute.
McVitie's Stockport factory is also home to the chocolate refinery that produces all the chocolate used to top digestive biscuits, with an estimated 1.7 billion Chocolate Digestives sold each year.
Anthony Coulson, general manager of the Pladis Stockport factory, said: "Our Stockport site has a proud history and an exciting future. 80 million packets of McVitie's Chocolate Digestives are made every year, with all of the chocolate made in Greater Manchester."
Mete Buyurgan, Pladis' UK and Ireland managing director, said: 'We have a fantastic suite of much-loved brands, baked by dedicated colleagues, and we have a responsibility to continue to nurture these brands for customers and consumers across the world.'
