This Vancouver music store is a go-to for celebrity musicians

If you caught one of two The Weeknd concerts at B.C. Place last week, you saw opening act Mike Dean shredding on a custom Dean 'Dimebag' Darrell Razorback V Pantera Signature model guitar. That axe came to the musician, who is also The Weeknd's band guitarist, courtesy of Vancouver's Rufus Guitar and Drum Shop . Dean liked the guitar because it had his name on the V-shaped headstock. Both he and the late Pantera guitarist Dimebag hail from Texas. Other recent celebrity purchasers at the East Van outlet include Jack White, who recently dropped in to stock-up on some of the local store's extensive offering of collector instruments and gear. 'While Fender brand instruments are by far our biggest sellers, we also sell a lot of hard-to-get vintage instruments and gear, and that's what brings people like Jack White and Mike Dean into the store' said Rufus owner Blaine McNamee. 'Jack bought a rare 1960s-era Davoli amp from Italy and a Roland Acetone tape echo, which is one of the first tape delay machines. Mike grabbed a 1965 Fender Jazzmaster and the Dean Dimebag model, which he played at B.C. Place .' McNamee says the reason these stars stop at the shop is because of its reputation among collectors for doing thorough due diligence in checking every last detail of the provenance of the vintage items on the store floor. It's a time-consuming process the store has been known for since opening in 1972. 'We've been doing this kind of stuff for years, so we are a destination for any kind of vintage and always stock it,' he said. 'The reason is that we have the expertise to go through the time-consuming process of authentication down to whether the screws, the finish, the pickups, the case, everything is original. 'The more genuine it is, the higher the price it fetches.' As for how long celebrities, collectors or regular buyers spend in the shop trying to decide on a purchase, McNamee says it depends. If there was a mission statement for the store it is to make the whole vibe of the space be one where people want to hang out. That is typically what happens too. Given the number of well-known musicians who work there and on the teaching faculty, there is a steady flow of visitors that come to shoot the breeze as much as buy. 'A guy like Mike Dean or Jack White comes in and, if they like us, they are going to hang out and play different things and talk to staff,' said McNamee. 'A lot of times, these people are on a time schedule, but normally it would be one to two hours. Of course, we aren't even touching on the negotiating aspect of things, the back and forth, when you are getting into really serious stuff that can run up to $120,000.' In those cases, staff will often run collectors through a number of authentication methods including putting an instrument under black light to look at finishes, run over components and so on. This can run an additional 30 minutes. 'There area a lot of people who come in, play some stuff, ask some questions and you know they aren't going to buy,' he said. 'But then they keep coming back and, sooner or later, they may buy something. Keep in mind that the landscape is constantly changing and, if you see something online that you might want, you aren't the only one looking. Next time you come by, it may be gone and we won't see that particular instrument again.' To collectors, the issue isn't whether these vintage instruments are better sounding than new models. While vintage gear does often have a distinct sound, it can be recreated using today's technology. Instead, dropping $10,000-plus on an original Fender guitar is about owning a piece of music history. And the global market for such items is very competitive. 'It's not a question of 'Is it better?,' it's a handmade instrument and technology is totally different now,' McNamee explains. 'There are custom-shop instruments available today with the same sort of build range, but it's still quite different. A 1965 Jazzmaster was built by the company founder Leo Fender, with materials like Brazilian rosewood, which has been illegal to harvest since 1968, and came with hand-wound pickups and other older production techniques.' McNamee started working at the store in 2010, purchasing it from the founders in 2014. A separate drum shop opened in 2015. In 2019, the stores consolidated at the present location. Like many music retailers, McNamee is also a musician. He is a member of local pop punk band Precursor whose members include musicians from local favourites such as Daggermouth, Carpenter, and Gob. The store's hand-picked teaching staff comprises a who's who of the local indie music scene. Sometimes, members of local rock and pop royalty sell back some of their past purchases. A case in point is Marianas Trench lead singer, songwriter and producer Josh Ramsay. The Call Me Maybe co-writer is pictured on the Rufus Guitar and Drum Shop website surrounded by a number of unique guitars as part of a special individual artist sale. Ramsay has nine of his choicest axes on the market. 'We get artist sales of individual pieces, but this is one of the first times that we have had one this large for a single artist,' said McNamee. 'There is a lot of demand for Josh's guitars. He has a very engaged fan base and a lot of really great instruments.' For his part, McNamee loves his 1981 Gibson Grabber base. While the market for vintage electric basses isn't as active as it is for electric or acoustic guitars, that doesn't mean there aren't buyers out there looking for vintage scores. Anyone with a taste for holding down the rhythm section with something collectible could consider the 1962 Fender VI bass in stock at the store. It will only set you back $14,999.99 . What do the cheapest tickets cost to see The Weeknd in Montreal?

Vivid Seats is the New York Post's official ticketing partner. We may receive revenue from this partnership for sharing this content and/or when you make a purchase. Featured pricing is subject to change. The Weeknd has weeknight plans. On Thursday, July 24 and Friday, July 25, the four-time Grammy winner will headline at Montreal's Parc Jean Drapeau. These shows are part of the 35-year-old singer's ongoing 'After Hours 'Til Dawn Tour' in support of his 2025 album 'Hurry Up Tomorrow' with special guests Playboi Carti and Mike Dean that has crisscrossed all over North America these past few months. If you'd like to hear 'Blinding Lights,' 'Can't Feel My Face,' 'The Hills,' 'Starboy' and so many more of The Weeknd's timeless hits live in his first Montreal show since he headlined the Osheaga Festival back in 2017, last-minute tickets are available for both shows. At the time of publication, the lowest price we could find on seats for either concert was $127 USD including fees on Vivid Seats. Not bad considering how elaborate The Weeknd's live shows are. 'In a marathon 40-tune show, the 35-year-old brought nothing less than an A-game to the arena-spanning set, The Vancouver Sun wrote in a review of a recent concert. 'From its veritable [British Columbia] forest of flames, criss-crossing lasers, giant golden showpiece statue similar to the one seen in Fritz Lang's dystopian science fiction classic 'Metropolis,' the design was all drama and flash.' Can't make it to Montreal? Four 'After Hours 'Til Dawn' concerts are scheduled to take place in The Weeknd's home Toronto Rogers Centre on July 27-28 and Aug. 7-8. For more information, our team has everything you need to know and more about The Weeknd's pair of Parc Jean Drapeau concerts below. All prices listed above are subject to fluctuation. 'Moth to a Flame' The Weeknd new music On Jan. 31, The Weeknd released his sixth studio album 'Hurry Up Tomorrow,' featuring big names like Lana Del Rey, Florence and the Machine, Travis Scott, Future, Playboy Carti and more. Over 22 tracks, the gifted vocalist toys with genre jumping from 'Thriller'-like '80s synth pop, thumping EDM, open-hearted ballads, pulsing club cuts and laid-back chillwave. Somehow, he sticks the landing lending his angelic pipes — that sound like they were dipped in honey — to each sonically adventurous avenue he travels down. That's particularly true for the earworm 'Sāo Paulo,' which will likely become a party playlist staple for years to come. We're already shimmying just thinking about it. To hear for yourself, you can find the ambitious 'Hurry Up Tomorrow' here. The Weeknd brings his After Hours 'til. Dawn tour to Vancouver's B.C. Place for two nights this week. UPDATE: There's been a last-minute change to the concert lineup — and we have the set times. Here's what you need to know about the concerts: The Weeknd plays B.C. play for a two-night stand July 15 and 16. The concert is expected to start at 7 p.m. Doors at B.C. Place open at 5:30 pm. LiveNation shared the planned set times for tonight's concert. According to the company, Mike Dean will perform from 7:20 p.m. to 8:10 p.m. The Weeknd is set to take the stage at 8:40 p.m. — minus any possible delays caused by any backstage sipping of his new Nespresso collaboration brew — through to 11 p.m. UPDATE: The B.C. Place website has a full list of rules and regulations regarding what you can and can't bring into The Weeknd concert. Concert goers are recommended to have their tickets downloaded on their mobile device or Ticketmaster app and ready to scan at the gate for quick entry. Bags are restricted at B.C. Place. The venue has a 'clear bag policy' that sees the size of bag restricted to the below dimensions: Bags no larger than 6.5' x 8.5' Clear plastic bag (including clear plastic freezer bags) no larger than 12' x 12' x 6' Large bags can be checked at the venue for a fee of $10 per piece. This service is offered on a first-come-first-serve basis. Check the venue website for a full list of restricted items and recommendations. Tickets are available for the Vancouver concert via A quick search on the site and app Tuesday morning yielded a short wait in a digital waiting room. Plenty of pairs of tickets showed as available, both via verified resale and direct sale, with prices ranging from around $78.40 to $249.90 (including taxes and fees). American rapper Mike Dean is the opening act for the two Vancouver shows. Playboi Carti, who collaborated with The Weeknd on the song Timeless, is no longer on the B.C. Place bill. The news was released in a statement from the After Hours Til Dawn account on X in the early morning hours on July 15. 'Playboi Carti will NOT be joining The Weeknd on the Vancouver shows of the #AfterHoursTilDawnTour. Ticketmaster changed the name of the Vancouver shows to 'The After Hours Til Dawn Tour with Mike Dean'. As of now all other Canada shows still show Carti as part of the event.' In a statement from B.C. Place, the venue confirmed the change, adding that Carti was dropped from the concerts 'due to border crossing issues.' Dean has co-written a number of popular tracks by The Weeknd, including Double Fantasy, Popular, Jealous Guy and others. His set is averaging 112 songs from across his career. Dean appeared with The Weeknd at his headlining set at Coachella in 2022. Hurry Up Tomorrow was released on Jan. 31, 2025. The album is considered the final instalment in a trilogy that began with 2020's After Hours and 2022's Dawn FM. The Weeknd, Toronto-born Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, has teased that this could be the final tour as his namesake alter ego. Hurry Up Tomorrow is the artist's sixth full-length album and was accompanied by a companion film of the same title. Directed by Trey Edward Shults, the movie starring The Weeknd, Jenny Ortega (Wednesday) and Barry Keoghan (Saltburn) was poorly reviewed, with a 15 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. (Tomatometer ratings of less than 60 per cent are considered 'rotten.') The Weeknd's set list is averaging 35 songs on the After Hours 'til. Dawn tour and features a selection of songs drawn from across his multiplatinum career. How Do I Make You Love Me? from Dawn FM is the most-performed song on the tour so far. The artist is also dropping a number of covers in the show, including Future's Low Life, Rosalía's La Fama and the Kendrick Lamar collaboration Pray for Me. To keep things on equal footing, he is also performing Drake's Crew Love. Whether he is continuing to include Ye's Hurricane and Diddy's Another One of Me will remain to be heard at the B.C. Place shows. The After Hours 'til. Dawn tour has been going since 2022. The Aug. 23, 2022, concert at B.C. Place was well-reviewed in The Vancouver Sun, noting the following: 'It's a big jump from Rogers Arena to B.C. Place and The Weeknd is one of those rare artists to make it. There isn't another Canadian act of the moment touring playing 50,000-plus seat arenas. 'The Toronto singer's mix of futuristic R&B, pure new wave and dance pop has completely captured contemporary music at the moment and last night the artist born Abel Makkonen Tesfaye showed off his Grammy-winning live chops to an adoring audience. 'Naturally, the stage set up for the After Hours 'til. Dawn Tour is a lavish one with no shortage of bells, whistles, explosions and more.' Expect more of the same from this edition of the tour. Expect The Weeknd to sell well for both of the Vancouver concerts, which means around 50,000 people attending each night. Be sure to give yourself ample time to get into the venue, find you seating and so on. Read our guide on what to know about B.C. Place. sderdeyn@ Review: The Weeknd After Hours 'til. 'Soft' – Mike Dean reacts to controversially penalty awarded against Arsenal

'Soft' – Mike Dean reacts to controversially penalty awarded against Arsenal If Arsenal still had hopes of winning this season's Premier League title, they were surely extinguished on Saturday as they drew at Everton in the lunchtime kick-off. Mikel Arteta's side had gone ahead at Goodison Park courtesy of Leandro Trossard's opener, but that was cancelled out after half time when Iliman Ndiaye netted from the penalty spot. Advertisement The game was another example of Arsenal's desperate need for a new striker, but there was also major frustrations with the penalty that Everton were awarded. Myles Lewis-Skelly was adjudged to have fouled Jack Harrison just inside the area, as called by referee Darren England – with VAR confirming the decision. Fans across the country condemned the decision of England and the VAR team, especially those of an Arsenal persuasion. Arteta was equally frustrated and furious at the decision, and now a referee's perspective on the matter has been revealed. Ex-referee Mike Dean delivers verdict on Everton penalty Myles Lewis-Skelly battles with Jack Harrison during Arsenal's 1-1 draw against Everton (Photo by Imago) As per TBR Football, former referee Mike Dean spoke during Sky Sports' Soccer Saturday programme on the penalty decision at Goodison Park, which he believes was just about the right decision. Advertisement 'There's a bit of contact outside and there's a little bit of contact inside. I think it's a soft one. It's probably not wrong, but it's a soft one.' Ex-Tottenham Hotspur defender Michael Dawson also addressed the incident on Soccer Saturday, and he was much more scathing of the decision of England. 'I don't know why Lewis-Skelly doesn't go to attack it… Harrison gets the wrong side of him. I think this is awfully soft, but it's gone to VAR… I can see why it was given in real time. But watching it again, there's hardly a touch.' Ultimately, it is another disappointing result for Arsenal, and it does not set them up overly well for Tuesday's Champions League quarter-final first leg against Real Madrid – although the La Liga giants lost their game on Saturday, going down 2-1 at home to Valencia.
