NFL trade rumor: Looking for Prescott backup, Cowboys could seek this howitzer-armed QB

NFL trade rumor: Looking for Prescott backup, Cowboys could seek this howitzer-armed QB The Cowboys' need for a backup could lead them to pull of Trade No. 3 of this offseason. ESPN's Jeremy Fowler said the #Cowboys are a team that could be interested in trading for QB Joe Milton. If they're looking for a QB to develop behind Dak Prescott, Milton could be an option if they don't land someone in the draft. (🎥: NFL Live 3/19/25) — Brandon Loree (@Brandoniswrite) March 22, 2025 The Dallas Cowboys' QB depth chart currently features just two names: starter Dak Prescott, who was lost during Week 9 of the 2024 season to a hamstring injury, and Will Grier, who returned to Dallas for his second stint following Prescott's injury and was signed through 2025 following the end of last season. A backup remains high on the list of needs for the Cowboys ahead of the 2025 season. According to Jeremy Fowler from ESPN, who spoke on the topic this week on NFL Live, the Cowboys could have interest in QB Joe Milton III, who the New England Patriots are exploring trading after a strong fill-in performance late in 2024. The potential acquisition comes after the Cowboys lost Cooper Rush, who had been their backup since his rookie season in 2017, to free agency; Rush signed a two-year deal with the Baltimore Ravens. Additionally, Trey Lance, who was the team's No. 3 option the past two seasons, remains a free agent. Milton III was drafted by New England in the sixth round, as the 193rd overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and spent his rookie season backing up last year's third-overall pick, Drake Maye, and veteran Jacoby Brissett. Cowboys executive VP Stephen Jones has let it be known Dallas will be seeking to use a draft pick on a quarterback this year. Perhaps that comes to fruition via trade. The 6-foot-5, 246-pound quarterback debuted in Week 18 against the Buffalo Bills and quickly took advantage of the opportunity. Milton III completed 22 of 29 passes for 241 yards, throwing for one touchdown and rushing for another. His performance helped lead the Patriots to a 23-16 victory over the Bills. He became draft famous for his work at the 2024 scouting combine, showing off an incredible arm.
