Laos works to improve migrant workers' rights
VIENTIANE: Lao officials and stakeholders convened to review the implementation of the Poverty Reduction through Safe Migration, Skills Development, and Enhanced Job Placement (PROMISE) project, and to discuss future strategies for improving the management and protection of migrant workers' rights. The meeting was held in Lao capital Vientiane on Thursday (Aug 14), providing an opportunity to review the project's progress and discuss strategic directions to further strengthen support for migrant workers, according to a report from the Lao Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare on Friday (Aug 15). The PROMISE is a regional project implemented from 2021 to 2025 across Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Thailand. It aims to remove barriers faced by migrant workers, employers, and communities, contributing to poverty reduction while supporting economic recovery and growth. The project focuses on ensuring access to skills development, self-employment, and stable job opportunities, especially for female migrant workers. Laos' Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare continues its efforts to manage and protect the rights of migrant workers through various legislative measures, including revisions to the Employment Law. In addition, the government is working to improve the domestic employment situation by raising the minimum wage, expanding access to vocational training, and creating job opportunities for returning migrant workers. - Xinhua

Laos raises public awareness to prevent human trafficking
VIENTIANE (Xinhua): Laos has raised public awareness, especially among vulnerable groups, to prevent human trafficking. Laos' Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare held a campaign this week to commemorate the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, aiming to strengthen joint efforts against human trafficking and promote legal employment, according to the ministry on Wednesday. The event aimed to raise public awareness about the dangers of human trafficking, a serious crime that violates human rights, inflicts physical and psychological harm on victims, and undermines families, socio-economic development, and national security. The World Day Against Trafficking in Persons is observed annually on July 30 to raise awareness and promote international cooperation in ending human trafficking. - XInhua

Eritrea: International Workers Day Celebration in Northern Red Sea (NRS)
International Workers Day was celebrated in the port city of Massawa at the Northern Red Sea region level under the theme 'Productivity through Conscious Participation.' The event featured sports competitions, public campaigns, and seminars among other activities. Mr. Habtemariam Tesfamicael, head of the National Confederation of Eritrean Workers branch in the region, said that May Day is a day when workers raise their voices and renew their pledge to work hard and increase productivity. He also gave a briefing on the historical struggle of Eritrean workers. The branch office of the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare and the office of the PFDJ also delivered messages of solidarity. Ms. Asmeret Abraha, Governor of the region, highlighted the significant role Eritrean workers played during the armed struggle for independence, in safeguarding national sovereignty, and in the implementation of national development programs. She also called for strengthening unity and awareness, and for citizens to play their part in national affairs. Eritrea: World Day for Safety and Health Observed
World Day for Safety and Health at Work was observed at the national level today at Red Sea Bottlers Share Company under the theme 'Let's Ensure Professional Safety and Health.' Mr. Woldeyesus Elisa, Director General of Social Welfare at the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare, said that the day is being observed internationally this year in relation to Artificial Intelligence. Mr. Woldeyesus further stated that at the national level, the day is being observed with a focus on enhancing awareness, promoting understanding, and ensuring the safety and health of workers in the workplace. Noting that accidents and diseases at the workplace are mostly caused by unsafe activities and conditions, Mr. Woldeyesus said that such incidents lead to considerable human and capital losses, as well as reduced productivity. He also called on all institutions to establish safety and health committees. Mr. Haile Tesfamicael, a member of the National Confederation of Eritrean Workers, emphasized the significance of maintaining proper safety and health standards and inspecting workplace conditions. He stated that the measures to be taken for ensuring safety and health at work are clearly outlined in Labor Proclamation No. 118/2001. During the event, briefings were provided on the importance of establishing safety and health committees in workplaces. Eritrea: World Down Syndrome Day Observed
World Down Syndrome Day, 21 March, was observed at the national level in Mendefera, Southern Region, with a variety of programs marking the occasion. At the event, Mr. Desale Hagos, Head of the National Association of Intellectual and Developmental Disability, stated that this is the 14th international and 6th national observance of World Down Syndrome Day. He noted that the purpose of the event is to highlight the challenges faced by citizens with the condition and to enhance public understanding and awareness. Mr. Haile Gebremicael, Head of the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare branch in the region, explained that programs supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities are currently being implemented. He called on parents and foster families to help integrate children with the condition into society. Similarly, World Down Syndrome Day was also observed at the regional level in Teseney, Gash Barka Region, with various activities commemorating the day. At the event, participants emphasized the need for sustained public awareness campaigns to ensure individuals with disabilities receive proper care and acceptance within the community.
